Training Camp Tidbits

Sounds like Kellen Clemens is picking up the offense quickly and is putting in fifteen hour days to learn the system. Good for him. Grossman, by all accounts, is doing far better than Beck.

At some point, I think the depth chart will look like...

Grossman, Clemens, Beck.

Pete, in the beginning of practice he was clowning enough to be disruptive. Throughout the practice you could see players kinda begin to separate themselves from him. As soon as practice was over he went straight to the fans and started signing autographs. It just seemed he wasn't taking things seriously and was much more interested in the fanfare.

Recently, I was skewered for suggesting these things without some sort of tangible evidence (i.e., from a fan). This is not surprising to hear when you look at some of the things that have been said over the last month.

Trade him to Oakland or Buffalo. Or trade him straight up for Taylor Mays.

Hard to see Shanahan pronouncing Beck the starter and then abandoning that notion based on training camp (or even pre-season). But we'll see.

I've never quite gotten his confidence in Beck. I want to believe, but it's a stretch for me.

I never thought Banks was more than a one trick pony and wouldn't last.

With his off the field antics he will be replaced by Paul, Austin, Armstrong or TBD on returns.

Here's the thing - Beck has never been the starter. He has been praised as a hard worker and leader. The only promise that Coach made was that there would be an open competition. For whatever reason, some fans have taken this to mean that Beck has been installed as the starter.

What is the overall mood of the team? Without all the drama from previous years do the players seemed more focused?

I have been to the past 3 training camps and this is easily the most focused group I have seen thus far. Even Mike Sellers was more professional and focused than I have ever seen him.

Like I told others today, Beck has a great touch...when he isn't rushed. When he was rushed, he went through his progressions way to fast and dumped it off every time. He did not complete a pass over 15-20 yards all day.

Umm...Rex looked kinda fat. Not tub o' lard fat, but he had a belly. Got some images that I'll show you. Clemens din't impress me much. He didn't look any better nor did he look any worse than the other 2. Rex needs some work, but he will start day 1.

I like Donte Stallworth. The man came to practice focused and ready to play. He ran the sharpest routes of anyone on the field and was the best looking receiver out there. Even Moss. Hankerson had a sub-par practice, Paul was the second best looking receiver today that is new to the team. Gaffney did not look bad, he did not look good. Kelly, well...you can't make the team riding a stationary bike.

edit: Didn't get to see the defense much until the O v. D drills. Our offensive line needs a lot of work! Our defensive line looks much better than it did last year. And for those of you who think Adam Carriker won't start, I doubt that. He is getting pressure every time and he went up against Brown a lot.

Disruptive isn't a good thing, and to the point of alienating himself from teammates is about as bead as it can be. This kind of plays along the lines of some of the stuff BB has posted about him not being liked by others on the team. You would hope an older vet would take him off to the side for a talking too, and he gets his ass in gear.

If it's evident to a fan on the sidelines, the coaches have to see it. Doesn't bode well for Mighty Mouse....

Edit: Just saw the post from BB :)

Thanks for the recap.

What in particular or better yet, who in particular looked like they needed more work on the O Line?

I thought it might be difficult for Kelly to make the roster this year. Too much talent.

Most of the pressure came up the middle. Just seems like our defensive line is progressing better.

Ironically, it has nothing to do with talent. Injuries have done Kelly in.

I think it does. Two plus years ago Kelly and Thomas were brought in to the team in part because of their size advantage over the smurfs we had at the WR position. We passed on other receivers like DeSean Jackson for that reason.

In 2011, the Redskins now have a WR corps of players with good size and speed. Stallworth (6'0), Gaffney (6'1) and the picks Hankerson (6'3), Paul (6'2), etc.

Of that group you would have to look at Stallworth, Hankerson and Paul as guys that have better down the field speed than Kelly.

So, again....the competition, ie the TALENT is much better on this year's squad than in previous years where a Joey Galloway at 39 or a Randle El were the 'additions' to support Santana Moss.

I was really hoping we'd finally get to see what Kelly had in terms of talent. Dude just can't keep healthy. It's a shame, really.

I was hoping our release of Rabach and move of Montgomery to C would help with these issues. Apparently not.

I really hope the FA is taking notice of this and makes drafting OL a priority in next year's draft (and not just in the later rounds, either).

True, but Kelly is supposed to have by far the best hands on our team.

With Kelly, the FO has to decide quickly if these are related injuries that mean he is an injury risk again, or freak accident injuries that are unrelated and unlikely to hamper him.

Given they all seem to involve his legs, I tend to believe the former, and think they will cut him, particularly since he is already down this year.

its actually quite sad about Kelly, he is a hard worker who just has injury issues, if he could ever stay on the field he would make plays but at this point if he cant get on the field you have to cut the cord. give him until the end of preseason then done.

I don't see Locklear beating out Brown for the starting RT position. I see two options here, one is that Locklear becomes that swing tackle. He is a pretty good RT and he would get some work on the left side so that he would be a quality backup at either position. The other option is to have him compete with Lichtensteiger for the LG spot. He played some Guard in college but that might be a stretch.
