That was awesome.......but who the hell is Mike Holgrum? Lol.
 
The fact of the matter is I think there were a lot of signs that saw this coming. First, cleaning up the cap. We have now made it clear to everyone in the NFL that we have a franchise QB on the way to DC and now we can spend as much money as anyone in the league. Second was the twelve draft picks last year. That is when I knew something big was going down the next year. Maybe even the fact that they did nothing at QB last year should have been a hint. To roll into a season with Rex and Beck should have been a clue that something to fix the QB is coming.

That being said, holy crap this is a lot to give up for one player! The fact of the matter is there are a lot of people that say, "this is too much" but honestly we don't know and probably won't for at least two years. If he turns into an elite QB that is in the Hall of Fame in 20 to 25 years and leads us to multiple Superbowl rings then we didn't give up to much. If he turns out to be Jason Campbell, then we gave up to much.

I am by no means a professional scout but I have been a fan of the Redskins since the early 80's but have only been following the draft and college football since 2007. That being said I have RGIII ranked 4th among all the QBs that have come out since that time. 1) Luck (people he going to be that good, trust me) 2) Stafford 3) Matt Ryan (who has been good but maybe not as good as I expected) and finally RGIII that unless the Colts shock everyone will be our QB in roughly 6 weeks. Next on the agenda is getting a WR that can stretch the defense. I have said it before, one of RGIII's strengh is his accuracy on his deep ball and right now our best deep threat is Anthony Armstrong. That's not going to get it done.

Overall, I was surprised at how much they gave up but I am excited about the future of our franchise QB in Washington.
 
So, we either traded two years worth of potential first round busts for one this year or we just put ourselves in position to draft a quarterback touted to be one of the most dynamic players of a generation.

If nothing else, the game day excitement of seeing a youngster develop with expectation for a real chance of success will be leaps and bounds over watching what we've had for almost 20 years.

If he succeeds to our level of want and expectation we will finally have "one of those guys", I've seen a little of that since Sonny and Joe.

Those blessed with the acumen of football often expound on the effect elite players can have on the rest of the team. If the kid has "it" then by default our entire offense just got better, including the O-line regardless of any additional moves by the team.

I'll take it.
 
I think we got in too deep on this deal, my gut just doesnt like it. Now, with the cap space we have, if were smart shoppers in FA I'll feel a helluva lot better.
 
Negative nancies. Sheesh. Shanahan just manned up and put his balls on the table big time. If RGIII is a bust, he's out. Period. Shanahan, if memory serves, knows QBs pretty well and does pretty well with them. Two first rounders and a second for a franchise QB? In two years, no one will be complaining.

What great news to wake up to. Thank you FO!
 
Gotta agree w/ Goaldeje, this was a bold move and speaks volumes about the way the staff assesses Griffin as a talent. Sure, he could crap out but damn it's nice to see them make the deal to put us in contention. This trade will be dissected for years to come, but right now it just feels like Xmas morning.

Or it could mean they feel the pressure of knowing they are going into their 3rd season with the Skins and will not be given the benefit of the doubt for another 5-11 or 6-10 season unless they get a Franchise QB.

Just can't see it like that. When you look at the succession of moves they have made since taking over, cleaning up the roster, cleaning out contracts, last year's draft, etc., this is an evolutionary move, not a revolutionary one. They have set the stage for a QB and now have a great prospect in hand, one that will make the other players around him better.

I am not concerned right now what the record is this year, Griff is still a rook no matter how talented a rook he is, and there will be growing pains, but to have a serious solution for QB in our grasp instead of just repatching patched patches at the position changes the whole equation.

No offense El, but I don't understand this line of thinking. At all. Who gives a **** WHY they felt the need to go hard after of franchise QB? The fact of the matter is, we got him. They are getting their guy, their handpicked choice to lead the Skins for the next 10-15 years. Who cares about pressure they may be feeling?

Trading away picks for Donovan McNabb, stating he stakes his name on Rex Grossman, drafting Trent Williams with the 4th overall pick...

I understand the excitement, believe me. I want this to be a move that we can look back 10 years from now and say, "It was worth giving up SO MUCH to get him!"

You want to get excited, please feel free. I guess I have been stung a little more than most because I cannot get as excited as you guys over the prospect of RG3 for 3 1st round picks and a 2nd rounder. I do not give Shanny the benefit of the doubt after several questionable moves to counter the successful draft we seem to have had last year. And I will not forget all the moves we have made over 20 years that have seemed great at the time that have come back to bite us.

I just can't get excited about it, yet.

I was just going to jump on to say I haven't had a chance to read the thread yet and truly enter this debate but I do approve more than not.

However, my wife thinks that none of our moves will work out so long as Snyder owns the team. She made me post this. :)
 
Sadly, Snyders track rcord supports your wife's hypothesis. Here's hoping your wife could not be more wrong, and that you will get to enjoy rubbing her face in her wrongness!

I do not understand some of the sniveling. Before the 2011 season begun, I as well as others, went on record saying this team was going to be mediocre and the best thing we could hope for was our your players showing promise, but having a bad enough record to be in position to draft a franchise QB.


Heck most of the Talking heads predicted the Redskins drafting Luck but we will probably get the next best thing. We may have finally addressed the QB position for the next decade. RGIII is not brittle, if a guy with a body that looks like 200 pounds of chewed up bubble gum like Grossman can go a season without being injured behind a line that is really not that bad, then I do not see why RGIII can not.

WE can also rob the practice squads of teams with similar defensive schemes to fill out positions of need.
 
Comparing this to the numerous high prices the Skins have paid for players is ridiculous.
Not even looking at this from a talent perspective, this is nothing at all like those previous acquisitions.
In our history, it's always been about Free Agents past their prime.
The Skins have not ever gone after a draft pick like this, at least not in my memory.

It represents a completely new philosophy. DRAFTING FOR THE FUTURE.
NOT a short-term, over-the-hill fix. Give this NEW philosophy, that we've been begging for, for so long, a freakin chance.
It actually STARTED last year, with the trading down, to start re-building and stockpile picks.
This year we traded up. It shows we're finally approaching the draft with an intelligent plan, using every tool we have to make the right choices.
We're building the right way, finally. The draft.
At least be happy with that.
 
The bottom line is this is the third year of our front office's tenure. They had to get their QB this year. Absolutely had to. I'm not shocked it cost us two firsts. The extra second rounder is a little high, but at least we have an extra pick this year to somewhat mitigate that. I'm glad we didn't give up volume, some sort of 'ricky williams' type trade. We still need picks to fill out our roster and we still largely have that.

Of the obvious QB options floating around (Stick with Grossman, Manning, Orton/second-tier rookie, trade up for RG3) this was my first choice. So for that I'm pleased. This option, to me, has the biggest upside ... by far. And given that last year we made 12 picks, and this year and next year we still have seven ... that takes the sting out of trading picks away. Ax is correct. if this were Vinnie I'd be pissed, because Vinnie couldn't make a decent pick past the first round. But our current front office seems to be better at that. Much better. So I think we can get away with this move.
 
We have had 12 first round picks since 1999, five of them have played in the Pro Bowl (Bailey, Arrington, Samuels, ST and Rak). One made the Pro Bowl with a different team (Carlos Rogers). It remains to be seen if Trent Williams and Ryan Kerrigan will join that list.

The ten years before that, we had NO Pro Bowlers. Our drafting has been better over the past dozen years or so and these first round picks have all been starters. Assuming RG3 will start within the next year or two we will, in essence, have given up two guaranteed starters for our franchise QB, one of which could have made the Pro Bowl based on this trending.

We made the playoffs three times during that stretch.

From 1971, when "Trader" George Allen became HC, through 1990 we had a whopping three first round picks. Granted two are HOF'ers (Monk and Green) and the other a legendary Hog (Mark May) but the fact is, we made the playoffs and won Super Bowls WITHOUT first round picks.

Yes, that was a different era but it didn't have FA to help you fill holes. Then again, you didn't lose your good players to FA either so that's kind of a wash.

Maybe I'm just trying to justify what we gave up to move up to the #2 spot. Heck, according to the ESPN poll, 75% of the country thinks we gave up too much. I'd lke to ask every person who voted in that poll if the Giants gave up too much to get Eli Manning, who now has two Stupor Bowl rings. I'm guessing at least 80% would say no. For some of you, it may look bad now. Hell, it "may" look bad later but I haven't been this excited about our future prospects since Joe Gibbs came out of retirement to coach again.

A year or two from now, some of you will have the honor (or dishonor) of saying "I told you so". In the meantime, let's enjoy the ride.

And by the way.........my money is on Boone. ;)
 
Woot!!!! Never expected this to cost less than a trade of firsts this year and the next two years firsts. Would have preferred not to give up this years second, but we had to do what was needed to get the job down. Nothings a sure thing, but when you have a chance to get guy who can be a franchise type QB, you do it. I've never seen a franchise QB in a Redskins uniform. I was six when Sonny left and have no memory of him playing, so I couldn't be more excited about this prospect.


And, this is nothing like the free agent debacles of the past. This is building through the draft just like all you naysayers have begged for. No one is ever a sure thing, but when you have someone who is considered by the best minds to be as close to a sure thing as there is, you go for it.
