Could it be Tua?

And his play declined with each successive game. Not all his fault. But it was obvious...at least to me.

he declined by going 6-2? We were winning that game against a formidable Texans team.

Guess my glasses were a different shade.

That's cool! Intelligent folks can arrive at different conclusions.

I think all bets are off with Smith until he can run, take a hit, etc. Profile in courage? Sure. As you say......prove it on the field.

No, it is not a terrible place to start from. everyone does it. The Rams did it when Kurt Warner took over. The Pats did it when Brady took over. The 9ers did it when they let Montana go.

You seemed adamant that we "must" realize that we will "SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK". you continued with it like if we didnt it was an issue. It isn't. We are allowed to root and have hope. It is why people come back year after year.

We are coming off the worst year with a President who sucked, a HC who had given up and was running the team like his own lunchroom drama committee, and a team that had no leader. We have a hell of a lot better now and its OK to admit that.

Mike, I'm not talking about what you are allowed or not allowed to do. This isn't personal. I'm not judging your fandom.

My posts are meant to be taken in the context of what the front office should do. Pleasant surprises happen, but a front office can't afford to operate under the assumption that everything is going to work out better than expected. I don't know how else I can explain it.

Actually, the Redskins were 6-3 and were not winning that game when Smith went out. In fact, he had just thrown a pick-six that put the Texans ahead by 10 points. There's no way to know how the rest of the season would have played out with Smith in the lineup, but it looked to me like there were signs the wheels were falling off after the 5-2 start. The Redskins had just gotten crushed by the Falcons, who were 3-4 at the time. They then won a very uninspiring game against the 3-5 Bucs team with a horrendous defense. Smith had thrown for under 200 yards in 5 of the past six games and had suddenly decided to start throwing brutal interceptions against the Texans. Had Smith not gotten hurt, the Redskins ultimately may have fared better. But I don't know that it would have been a significant improvement. The Redskins were winning despite Smith's production, not because of it.

In fairness, you said that it needed to be put out there that the team and offense were going to suck. I however am in the same camp that Mike is, in saying I'm not willing to say that until they in fact do.

I also don't think they're going to completely suck. I think they will have some learning curves, but if the team does what I think they should do, the offense could look adequate, getting better as the year goes on. I think Haskins can be closer to week 17 vs the Giants, than week 4 vs the Giants.

I also think Peterson continues to be true to form, as he was this past season, I think Mclaurin, Sims, and Harmon take steps.

We are coming into a season with a new system, a new culture, a new front office, Bruce is gone... I think we will see a direct impact on the field. I'm not saying we are a major contender, or some sort of a prolific pass attack, but I DO think we will be better than last season. A season that included a HC change, multiple philosophy changes, multiple QB changes, one of the most injured offensive lines in football, a rookie QB who, as far as we all know, had his own struggles, but also wasn't exactly being put in a position to succeed until after Gruden got dismissed. That same offense had Peterson rush for ~900 yards after being blackballed by Gruden, and WR who missed the franchise record for a rookie by 8 yards... and he did it in 14 games, missing week 4 and week 17... both vs the Giants.

I don't think we necessarily suck.....

You sure did try to word it like that. In all caps. With a drawn out SUUUUUUUUUUUUCK and several other words chosen to specifically say we need to understand that we won't be any good and not to expect it.

Im merely telling you that your opinion is fine, but it isn't gospel and shouldn't "have to be said" just because people may feel a different way.

As always, it's not just looking at players added to the roster. It's also about how/whether the competition is improving relative to the Skins.

No idea at this point whether the Riverboat pilot and the transplanted Panther coaching staff will produce a championship team. I believe Henry's point is that there is a track record for the Skins - until proven otherwise. Keep Hope Alive has bad connotations for me......so I will sit back and place my bets after I see some progress/some intelligence behind what is unfolding on the field. It will take more than a year....no doubt.

he had thrown for 2180, 10TDs, and 5 picks. he had 168 yards rushing and 1 TD. He did that with Josh Doctson, 9 games of Crowder, 7 with Richardson, and Reed being the dependable receiver.

he had an 85.7 rating.

the game against the Texans may have been his worst, but it is far better than anything we had with bloated stats Cousins, or anyone else in a long time. we were leading the division and most likely would have won it. instead...we now discuss things like this.

Well, I don’t know if we’d have won more games with Alex but we wouldn’t have had a washed up ex-Jets QB or Josh Johnson under center. I think Smith made a huge difference when he was in there. He had very low yardage #s all year but we’d still found ways to win and were in command of the division when he went down. The whole team regressed from the moment he was lost for the year.

btw....been reading reports that this cat Simmons had an unbelieveable combine.

he killed it.. likely locked himself in as a top 5 pick. NYG woudl be insane to pass on him.

Well, let's hope you guys are right.

I’m just glad I could stir up so much angst and so many bad memories! Never very far out of reach if you’re a Redskins fan...lol

10 games into 2016 the Redskins were 6-3-1.

Kirk Cousins had thrown for 3091 yards, 17 TDs and 7 picks and a 98.7 passer rating. He did that with the 28th ranked defense.

I'm not sure 6-3 and 10 points behind in the third quarter having just thrown a back-breaking INT is 'far better.'

Some thoughts El (just for fun; and you make a good argument)
- MaHomes knee cap almost became a table ornament; there may be adaptation/evolution as you say, but not without risk
- per your thought process, o-line should evolve as well to meet the defensive changes

I do agree with your primary oberservation and wonder when it will all overcome the game: you now have larger DBs, with long arms, more weight and lightening speed/quickness. I'm surprised we haven't seen more Sean Taylors at the safety position. Proves how unique his attributes were. But I still exepct it to happen.

First, Mahomes could still be an outstanding QB without the tremendous elusiveness, he has a strong arm, great vision, and a very quick release. A half speed Mahomes is still quick enough with his talent to succeed.

And there were some OL out the running 4.8 40's as well, but where is that quickness more effective, an OL walking backward, trying to dig in and not let the defender past, or a defender who starts in stance to run at the QB?

As for the Sean Taylor likeness, have you seen Isaiah Simmons? He plays a different position, but is physically very similar to ST...but faster. He plays LB, but Clemson lined him up at Safety and slot CB as well. He's that talented.

You mean Cousins who threw garbage stats so much that now even Vikings fans know it? Nice try.

Let me ask you this, what are your benchmarks for 'suck'?

I think this offense could be significantly better than last year and still qualify. The offense last year was that bad.

I think, with a decent free agent WR and solid rookie TE and a healthy, non-drop-off AP or a solid rookie RB, and an ok LT from somewhere ... perhaps the offense could rank on the low side of average? That would be a big jump. That's a big shopping list, though. And it's not one I'd think could be filled all in one season. And everything has to hit. Oh, and they could probably use a RT, and haven't re-signed Scherff yet.

My point, before we got into a debate over semantics, was that given all of those holes/question marks, the Redskins may as well look to the future at QB rather than spinning wheels with a guy who isn't going to be on the team in two years. And/or I think it would be crazy to rob ourselves of a draft pick to add another position (QB) to that list.

The defense is in much better shape. So there's that.

Anyway, that is all. Have good day everyone. :)
