Commanders Trade for QB Carson Wentz

Pretty much endangered nowadays. I dislike him and think he’s a fart smeller.

Don Coryell couldn't have done shit with what he's had to work with brother. He is literally the least of our problems. My opinion.

I'll take things further. Had we kept Norv instead of firing him in the midst of a winning season (who knew how rare those would turn out to be?), we'd have had a lot more success over the past 30 years.

The Turners know how to put an offense together. Give Scott Turner a real QB and consistent weapons, and he'll make his critics look bad.

Or - you know - we can do what we've done for 30 years and just keep firing MFers. That's worked out well for us.

All good, though I believe he cost the team at least 3 wins with his belligerent pass play-calling. Hopefully he’s learned not to abandon the run this season, and calls smarter games.

Better give him healthy RBs then Win. You want him to run a gimpy Gibson 30 times a game? Does that equal smart? With McKissic out, what is he supposed to do. If there were backups that could carry the load, I'd be more critical. Patterson hasn't done much to inspire confidence. Who is the 2nd RB?

Hell Scott would barely call 30 runs a game, much less feed a back over even 15 times. Took him til week 5 to call a 30+ run game. IMO Patterson was criminally under utilized. Only had 68 carries on the year. Now if he’d get even 10 a game that would be a more fair sample size.

Patterson got stuffed the first 17 times he got the ball. He has done nothing to inspire any confidence - and that's why he was an UDFA. Good RBs don't need 'chances' - they prove they can do it in practice and in games when they get the chance. Sorry - he's tough and game, but not sure he's an NFL QB.

I sort of think Washington fans are stuck in 1980, where rush dominant teams were a common thing. Did you know we were 10th in the NFL in rushing attempts in 2021? It's fine to want us to be #1, but lets not continue to perpetuate the idea that Turner doesn't call running plays. We were 10th in the entire league.

I don't mean that sound dismissive - I also have felt that we 'abandon the run' at times - but the data doesn't support that overall. I sort of feel like maybe the whole 'they abandoned the run' thing is an NFL fan fall back when the alternative doesn't work out the way we wanted.

I have zero doubt Turner abandoned the run & the box scores reflect it, most notably in the losses. They may have been ranked 10th in attempts with 477. But that can mostly be attributed to four game win streak against Bucs 34, car 40, seat 43, & lv 30.

One can only dream of the 80’s power run game again. The team won then, and won in 2021 with it. Scott gets away from it and the gameplan folds as a result. How many times has the run game been rhythmically working only to for Scott to call 9 out of the next 10 plays a pass, usually resulting in underthrown incompletes?

I dont see it as a fallback or excuse when the OC continuously proves he can fail with pass plays that usually didn’t work over a run game that did. That again is on Scott for not exploiting what works and properly utilizing players on hand. We’re seeing 2 completely different versions of Turner’s playcalling brother. In the end that’s okay though

I get the criticisms regarding playcalling, I really do. I would just argue that you're overstating it - again, we are top 10 in volumes of rushes, and that doesn't come from just 4 games :) I think we are arguing from 2 ends of the equation. Your argument is, we aren't successful because we abandon the run. I might argue that we aren't successful because our passing attack is ineffective. We don't score enough, our QB play is bad, and we get behind. And as I've said before, when teams get behind, they pass more - that's almost an NFL universal, not just something that happens with Turner. I also think Turner might run more if he had a capable RB other than Gibson. When McKissic wasn't able to go, there are only so many times you can let Gibson get hammered every game. Patterson is just 'ok'.

The way this team was built last season the majority of success came from the ground game. I certainly see that as a recipe to win under the current roster. At the same time, as much as I was rooting for Heineken, the passing game was aggravating to witness mostly. TH’s deficiencies make the ground game played even more crucial to the lack of offensive success.

I’m also seeing it as this team could have been even more dominating in running if Heineken could throw it further than 15 yards with any zip. Wentz should take care of that end, while Ron grabs a solid RB this draft to spell Gibson & Kizzy. A drafted RB becomes even more crucial if JDM leaves in free agency.

He's not wrong...

With the addition of a QB with a big-league arm who is not simply a ‘game manager’, Turner gets a chance to show his talents. No pressure. 😉

Well, that's the key right? We've yet to see what Turner will try to do given a QB with a legit NFL arm and not limited either by D. Haskins' lack of football acumen or TB4's limited arm or Alex Smith's lack of a body.

Carson may not be a football genius when it comes to decision-making in crunch time, but I've never gotten the impression he can't read a progression and generally get the ball out on time.

Let me rephrase... rumors Steelers might also have had an interest in Wentz. If so, would explain the cost for us.

Steelers wouldn't have been a credible threat based on their history. They have never traded for a starting QB since at least the time of Bradshaw; Charlie Batch was a filler from FA. They also snapped up Trubisky, who also is utterly incompetent at reading defenses, on day 1 of free agency. They should be keenly aware of the extraordinarily stiff level of competition within the entire AFC conference.

Plus, their 2nd and 3rd rounders are far more valuable because the make valuable picks. Emmanuel Sanders, Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, Mike Wallace, Juju-Smith Schuster. Having a steady stream of receivers like that means they could manage the cap.

Kind of helps when you have arguably the best RB in the league, too. Teams aren't blitzing as much.

TY basically saying Wentz was pretty good except when he wasn't.

He outright cost his team two games, and I'm not talking about the Jags or the Raiders.

Rams and the Titans.

The Rams game wasn't due to his play, but rather his decision and attempt to make a play. The one where he broke both his ankles trying to make a throw to Pittman. So his backup stinks up the joint, including a pick to Jalen Ramsey. If he simply just took the sack and fell normally, his back never takes the field.

The Titans game wasn't lost on the pick 6, bad as it looked, but the pick in OT into triple coverage when there was a wide open check down to Jonathan Taylor. Players remember those moments...especially when 1 more game was all that was needed to make the playoffs.

So we just need to find an NFL QB who doesn't cost his team a win with mistakes. That should pretty much cover the rest of our natural lives...
