Commanders Trade for QB Carson Wentz

One of them is A.J. Hawk. Yeah, he had a great career. And the other is a punter.
 
Probably not a bad comparison. The one thing I will say, those who have bitched for a year about Heinicke's lack of arm strength - that issue is solved. Wentz can sling it all over the field. McLaurin and Dyami are going to have deep ball chances they've only dreamed about before now.
 
Can I post about Pickett, Willis or Ridder in this thread?

Strong to me is a JAG. Maybe they all are. The only one I haven’t seen that might be a player is Matt Corral.
 


At 29 years old, football players don't change their habits.

This guy might be a less virulent Jeff George.

Still think this trade is more of a bailout for the Colts since we are a big market team "in a state of sin" than any serious belief that this guy can reach "MVP" level. But if Rivera and Scott actually do think they can bring out his MVP form, I would find that extremely disturbing.

Also, we really suck at screens, and I would not be surprised of Carson does his old interception chucks on those type of plays.

 
Many are saying Wentz is the best Washington QB since Kurt Cousins.

Hopefully he will say all the right things and not be lying. And also hopefully he prefers charcoal over gas.

I watched a couple of Corral’s highlights and will go hard-pass. Wasn’t accurate and he’s too small for the position. He’d get smashed within the first couple of games.

So, one day after the Carson Wentz trade, I can still say (for better or worse) that I am a Washington Commanders fan.

You know what likely would have made me say the exact opposite? Deshaun Watson. So there is that I guess.

Look, the trade was very costly and it is still going to leave us with many question marks when we head into our September opener. But is there ever a season where a cloud of uncertainty doesn't seem to be hanging over this team's head? I guess we just have to let it all play out and hope that this mix of players make each other better and find some chemistry together.

Clearly, a trade for a Russell Wilson type that could have easily allowed us to go from mediocre to potentially great was never going to happen.

In the absence of that, they opted to try and go from mediocre to decent/good. Ultimately, people are going to bark about that because patience around this fanbase is beyond thin.

People look across the street at the neighbours with jealousy and shout, "But the Bengals turned it around in two years!"

I suppose it is not a one size fits all situation...
 
I'm not in love with this move. I want to say I don't hate it but there are just over 28 million reasons to hate it.

As things currently stand, Washington has the 8th most expensive QB in the league for the 2022 season. No doubt that will change after some teams rework contracts. But at the moment Wentz will make more this year than Wilson, Jackson, Stafford (who just won a SB), Murray, Burrow, Prescott, Carr, and Allen. Granted, a couple of those guys are still on rookie deals that aren't close to market value but not all of them.

Overnight we went from a team with a great cap situation to a team with a lousy situation. Our best move money-wise is to extend Wentz so we can reduce that number for this year but can we do that without seeing him on the field with our team and without seeing him in the locker room?
 
After some hours to digest the move…I don’t hate it.

Is the team better today than it was 24 hours ago? Yes

Was the compensation too high? Yes, but I wouldn’t want to have missed out to another teams deal by being more frugal.

Is he a leadership liability? Some say yes, Colt’s players don’t.

Is the money too high? Not in today’s NFL for the position.

Do I still want to invest in a rookie QB this year or next? You betcha.

One main reason we were in a great cap situation is because we didn’t have a legitimate starting QB on the roster.

Bob, Wentz is on a 3 year contract. They don’t need to extend him. Most likely they will take all that guaranteed money he’s due this season and see if they can work out an agreement to spread it over several seasons.

And yes, I know one of the reasons (probably the biggest reason) that we are in a great cap situation is no legit QB on the roster. However, it is rare that a team adds a guy with this many question marks who costs this much overnight. Teams who pay this much usually negotiate these contracts themselves, not inherit someone else's stuff.

Look, I mostly love his numbers and I think his addition makes McLaurin the best WR in the NFC East (maybe the best WR in the NFC not named Kupp). I wish he was more than 62% career completion guy but then Brady is only 64%.

If I'm really honest, he was the guy I wanted before we did the QB Pod last week when the guys largely convinced me Winston would be a better option at less money.

I would argue the opposite.. Keep it exactly where it is.

Keep the $28 mil in this season and keep the next 2 exactly where they are. If he bombs this year, you're out with zero financial commitment beyond the end of this season. IF he plays well enough that we want to keep him around, his cap number actually goes down a couple million, while the cap will be going up again next season.. and the following.
