Commanders Trade for QB Carson Wentz

He has missed a few due to concussion but he is also known to be a tough guy. Played despite ankle sprains in both legs.

How I see it :
This is a QB, who just might be a downgrade or a lateral move at overall talent at QB. And at best, is only a slight upgrade, IMO.
So...for that, we gave up 2 Third Rounders, one of which might become a Second rounder, and also dropped way down in this year's 2nd round.
And also are eating up his 2022 salary of 28 Million, plus his bonus.
If someone disagrees with my assessment of his overall talent, I would suspect that they are focusing too much on his perceived upside, or the past Wentz.
But we are getting all of Wentz, and not just the good parts. And it's not all great or even good.
Plus, he's only a short-term solution. Perhaps as little as one season.
So, barring an absolute shocking outcome, it looks like a sure mistake.
We pick good in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Think of the 2 players we're going to miss out on.

Wentz year LAST YEAR is better than anything a DC QB has done since Kirk Cousins. I have no issue with anyone who thinks we overpaid. We might have. But you're literally the first person I've seen claiming he might not be an upgrade, lol... He's got an NFL arm we haven't seen here in forever - maybe since Sonny :)

We are dropping from 42 to 47 - 5 slots is hardly a drop of "way down", man.

And as far as upgrades go, he is a huge physical step up over anything we have on the roster right now.

The question is his decision making, I think.

He was good in the middle of the year, but I recall that his beginning and ending of the year was extremely sub-par, especially during the clutch time, when they just needed him to win one game to clinch the playoffs, out of the last 2 against Vegas and JAX
That seems to account for the majority of the year.

He's got an NFL arm we haven't seen here in forever - maybe since Sonny :)

How about Dwayne Haskins ? :)
A great example of how an NFL arm by itself, is far from sufficient.

I didn't say a strong arm - I said an NFL arm.

Here is a list of NFL QBs whose Career completion rates that are worse than Carson Wentz's: (Wentz is 29th All-Time)

One blessing in the Wentz pickup... it eliminated the possibility of a Deshaun Watson trade. I don't really believe that was a possibility for 3 reasons. There's no way Watson would want to come here over numerous other potential suitors. Secondly, what it would have taken to win that competition for him would've made the RG3 move up cost look like chump change. And finally, unlike most, I actually believe this front office, except for our owner, actually cares about right and wrong and did not want a guy who almost certainly did most of the things he's accused of, as the face of the franchise.

Say what you will about Carson Wentz, but he's by all accounts a decent human being. For me - things like that still matter.

I have been anticipating the “we could have traded for Watson” posts. I agree with what you stated that this would not have been a good trade. There is so much about the Watson deal that would be negative. The positive would be if he balls out and you have a QB. But the cost to get him, the cost of his massive contract, and his sexual assault cases. I know he will not be charged, but the civil cases are still there. It’s mortgaging the present and the future to add to a mess instead of trying to clean it up.

I think the Commanders obviously did their due diligence on Watson, but I'd like to think they decided on a no for the right reasons.

Yes, as a QB he's likely an elite talent that instantly puts you into the Playoff/Superbowl conversation. Even if it costs the earth to get him.

But his dodgy personal life shenanigans... Ours is the franchise that could LEAST afford that type of bad press. Could you imagine, if 'Dan Snyder's Franchise' took on Watson. Press would have a field day with that one, which is NOT the kind of press you want when trying to establish a new brand and trying to forget about the dodgy past of Snyder and the previous management structure. I also feel like Ron is a high-character Coach, who values players who have the right attitude and morals. I don't think Watson would sit well with him and the lockerroom integrity he wants to create.

Personally, I'm happy we didn't get him. As much as I'm going to hate it when he has *insert team here* going to the playoffs every year, I'm glad on this one thing we took the highroad.

Two things Knight - first of all, having Watson might instantly put us in the Playoff/Superbowl conversation with fans, but I don't believe that's true in reality. He's one of the best QBs in the league - but how many playoff games has Houston won with him? I also have to wonder if, had none of the sexual assault allegations come up, would we really want the guy? He is one of those players that thinks that based on his talent, he's entitled to be consulted on all team decisions. He thinks he's the co-GM from all that I can tell. He's exactly the kind of guy that would go straight to Snyder every time Turner or Rivera asked him to do something he didn't want to do. That's the last thing we need imho. I'm not diminishing his talent one bit. He's an amazing player. But those talents come with a highly questionable character and a serious diva complex. Hard pass for me.

I think you said far more eloquently what I was trying to convey. LOL

I'm quite happy that we didn't trade for Watson. The talent is undeniable, but all other things aside, I like where Rivera and co have the football side of our operation. He likes high-character people, and I'm not sure Watson fits the bill.

Now, if we could just get a high-character owner to go with that...

Very interesting interview from almost exactly a year ago. I don't know Wentz, but he certainly doesn't come across as arrogant or a diva. Maybe he's a great actor, but definitely worth watching.

Crazy to think how things changed so much in only 1 year.

First Carson Wentz public reaction. Classy.

I believe in Scott Turner. That makes me a rare DC football fan.

I want to believe in him, but I can’t just yet. I’ll be happy to be wrong. Very happy to be wrong.
