I have no proof for this, as it’s still too early on in Harris/AP’s tenures…but I don’t worry about the salary cap.

There are ways for owners who are willing to spend the money, in conjunction with creative GM’s, to manipulate the salary cap.

I feel confident Josh will be willing to allow whatever cap shenanigans it requires to build this team into a winner. I am even more confident that AP would never bring a player with a large cap # on without a plan to handle it.

Until I see otherwise, I am going to assume our FO is playing chess, not checkers.
 
His salary is gonna be irrelevant, unless we extend him for the same AAV (which I strongly doubt). We have more money than we know what to do with and lots of our contracts, including his, are 1 year things that don't hurt us later.

Indeed I'd rather pay more in this year's salary cap costs and spend a lower pick than less cap hit but higher pick (rumor is 49ers wanted a 4th but WAS being willing to eat the salary made it work). We can afford it.

He did, but I think it was more to do with them making the majority of his touches come from the RB position instead of the WR position later in the year. I don't expect us to utilize him as a RB like they did in SF.

 
Not worried about the cap space. If he does not pan out he is not on the books next year. We have plenty of Cap space for this free agent class

Peters basically poo-pooed the cap and said they were on a cash budget and essentially “you can work the cap.”

We owe Deebo a $15m bonus in late March.

Clearly Harris is willing to pay it.

- I think he might be the best run-blocking WR in the league who is still a real threat as a WR
- I think I want to see him line up in the backfield and rush 1-3 times a game, just to keep the D thinking about it
- I think this move makes McLauren, Daniels, and whoever the RB is better

Jajuan Jennings is definitely a better run blocker than him and Grant Cohn, a SF media guy, said Aiyuk was better as well in that regard

I think that's the beauty of this, if he doesn't come in hungry he wont get paid going forward, if he wants to get a big final contract either by us or any other team he will have to have a good year.

Exactly…great point, it’s amazing what a player does in their walk years and in situations like what Deebo will be in for us 2025…
 
Plus, Deebo seems like the kind of player who definitely likes playing with a chip on his shoulder.
 
Problem is then when he balls out we lose him in FA or it’s gonna cost a lot more to keep him. He’ll probably want 3-4 years at top dollar at that point. I’d be up for restructuring his one year left into a 3 year starting now, with a comfortable exit for us after two. I realize it’s adding some risk, but the reward is you get him longer at a presumably discount price. I get the contract year incentive, but if we are really worried that he’s not going to be motivated and productive we shouldn’t have made the trade in the first place. In short, if AP was willing to push the chips forward that he did, he should be willing to push a few more. I trust his judgment on this player that he knows very well.
 
I know we only have a one year sample size, but Peters seems to like rolling the dice on prove-it deals. He didn't renegotiate Lattimore and signed a ton of one-year deal last offseason. I think I like playing it that way. Yes, it does increase risk, but it also saves you from the situation we had with McNabb where we traded for him, immediately upgraded him, and then cut him the next year anyway.
 
If he balls out like he did 4 years ago then he would deserve to get paid and we would be happy to do so. I personally think we get something in-between his best year and last year. Will certainly be interesting to see how it plays out. I think our main issues continue to be OL and DL, this is just adding someone who is a vet, you know can contribute right away with a huge upside, and without spending a lot if he doesn't work out. Allows us to still focus on other areas in FA and the draft.

Not necessarily a bad thing though. He balls out and signs a big deal somewhere we could end up with a 3rd round comp pick out of it. That would be brilliant. Swap a 5th for a 3rd and get a good year out of Deebo is a best case scenario.

We will likely still be in the position of signing enough FAs next year that a comp pick probably wouldn't be in the cards. That said, if Peters continues to prove his ability to buy low on players and then let them walk when they get expensive..... that's the old Patriots model that proved highly effective, I'd be ecstatic.
