~* Breaking *~ - Commanders trade for Deebo Samuel

I'm sure it's in one of the threads here, but anyone know what the status of his contract? Years left, etc?

Wow that seems unwise…. This is a draft deep in talent where we are lacking. Losing a 5th round draft pick for a WR when we were one of the best offenses with the WR’s we had doesn’t seem right.

Outside of Terry our recievers were not good. So imagine our offense with some good players at WR2 and WR3? Especially a guy like Deebo with our OC. For a fifth im happy with it. Plus Peters knows Deebo and his character well.

The first thought that came to mind after the Samuel trade was that he fits what Peters and Quinn are trying to build here. That being an attacking, physical, and violent football team. Deebo plays aggressively and will add some growl to the offense's character.

Live look at Brandon Aiyuk right now

The only WRs currently under contract are Terry and McCaffrey. A lot of opportunity there and Deebo is instantly the 2nd best WR on the roster, even if you bring back everyone from last year. He’s likely as good as anyone actually available in free agency that comes in as a no 2 guy. A couple others may have been better to bring in, but they likely go after no. 1 money and attention.

He’s what Dyami Brown was good at, but the premium version. No chance you get the same level of talent in the 5th round of the draft so the salary becomes the question. I have a feeling the contract is reworked to bring come cap numbers down, but the deal is not official til after the new league year starts, so it may be a bit of a waiting game.

The seems a bit extreme, its not often a 5th round pick turn into a long term contributor. I suspect the bigger concern is with the cap implications and how or whether this limits our ability to sign FAs.

I think that's exactly it. I think the 49ers had a killer salary that they could afford while their QB was under his rookie contract, but now that they are going to have to re-sign Purdy the cap constraints are hurting them. There were a lot of people who believed if they couldn't find a taker for Deebo the 49ers would be forced to cut him.

I will have more to say on the topic when I get in front of a computer.

But my short thought is if Deebo is in shape and motivated, it’s a lock he’s better then just about anybody you pick in the 5th round.

The question is, will he be in shape and motivated?

Time will tell.

Yes. Another plus for us is it's a contract year for him so he SHOULD be very motivated and he's only 29. Don't love the salary impact but I expect to be happy about his production.

Isn't the Samuel trade the type of thing a Howie Roseman has done time and time again over the years? Nothing wrong with bringing in proven players for low day three picks when you are within a window to contend. Even if Samuel isn't a perfect player at this stage and has some concerns, he infuses your roster with far more talent in the short term than your fifth rounder would have.

My sense is Deebo is motivated ANY TIME he’s on the football field. He’s a high motor, aggressive YAC player.

I’m confident that, ESPECIALLY coming in to a Dan Quinn locker room, he’s going to perFORM.

And this frees up the 29th pick to go after an edge rusher or an O-lineman.

We all wanted two things for JD and the offense, better protecting and improved weapons. Well, our WR and to a lesser extent RB rooms just improved with the addition of Deebo.

I have a feeling, Deebo's days as a running back need to be limited. That's probably a big reason why he's been so injured and in decline. The question is how good a wide receiver is he without being a Swiss Army Knife.

As long as he can stay healthy, he should be a good addition. I do wonder if they do something with extending or just take the single year and see how he meshes.

I wasn't too excited at the thought of Deebo, but for a 5th is worth a shot. Cheering him on 100% now.

I was excited when I heard the news. I remember him as the guy that had an all-pro year in 2021, when he had 1700 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns.

Upon further review, I’ll have to temper my expectations. That 2021 season was an outlier compared to the rest of his career, when he averages more like 800 yard and 5 touchdowns.

Still, a 5th round pick is not a high cost for what should be a decent WR2 who is a good fit in our offense; and I trust Adam Peters with these vet signings after seeing what Wagner, Ekeler, and Ertz did for us last year.

I wonder what this means for the rest of our 2024 receivers, which include guys I like such as McCaffery, Brown, and Crowder.
