~* Breaking *~ - Commanders trade for Deebo Samuel

We now know where the money that we were going to pay Jon Allen when he is traded or cut is going to. According to Keim AP tried talking 9ers into taking on Jon Allen in the deal.

If this is on a 1 yr deal and Deebo is onboard then its an A+. My gut says there's no way Deebo wants to play with only 1 year left on his deal so we'll have to wait and see what happens with his current contract. Deebo can play when he's motivated. I still like the trade regardless if we have to give him a 3 yr deal at market value. Now we need a dynamic back and we're good on offense for now.

I disagree, the lines need to be improved more than WR or RB (in terms of overall ability/performance, I know those positions were going to look different). The OL play was made to look better due to JD, and that is a dangerous gamble to make on his health every year, in my opinion. I think they need to improve up front if they want to compete for a Super Bowl. It's a must in the NFC East in particular.

This is a great trade! And for a 5th rd pick? I know people like to think of the draft as the holy grail but the reality is the very very high % of 5rd picks do not make any contribution. You can add a proven legitimate #1/2 WR for a 5th, that's a no brainer. Just for fun, I Iooked it up and one study using the last 20+ yrs as data, only 4 to 5 % of 5th rounders end up as solid starters. Lets say they are even 50% wrong. That still means only 10% make it. So yea, give me Deebo for a 5th all day.

We'll probably get that 5th back for Allen, assuming he's not released.

We can get a RB in the draft, its deep. As for the O line, I agree but free agency hasn't even started yet. This was a trade so we didn't have to wait. I'm sure they're going to address O line on March 10th.

Hopefully, we get something for Allen but Keim and others think there's a low chance so if he's cut Allen's salary becomes Deebo's for a year. Woody Marks could be had for a 5th/6th and I'd expect AP to do a couple of trades during the draft and possibly before. Marks seems like a young Deebo with great hands but not as much speed but enough w/a 4.5 40.

I’m in between on this.

The asset cost of a 5th rounder is tremendous. You aren’t finding Deebo in the fifth very often.

On the other hand, he’s fairly expensive and he’s a bit of a whiner. I don’t want him to hurt our chemistry.

Back to positive, this move likely means we’re looking OL/DL as major needs in FA and with some extra weight in the draft. That is the key to this team taking the next step. So acquiring a known talent, for a fifth, to solidify a mediocre at best unit is a great move.

We’ll see. I can’t judge this move in a vacuum. So my opinion is “wait and see”

It sets a lot of potential things up though.

The need to justify or bemoan giving up a 5th is kind of silly guys. It is true that only about 5% (per the stats I found) of 5th rounders end up NFL starters, but a lot more do make contributions. Arguing 'we wouldn't have found a player of his caliber or even someone who makes the roster with a 5th round pick' is probably, but not absolutely right. The other thing is well - duh - you probably don't find Deebo Samuel in the 5th round, but you will find a 21 year old talent who costs you almost nothing for his first contract (vs. 17-20 million for a 29 year old).

The details kind of matter.

We just won't know how good this move was for awhile.

And I'll say something controversial. We might not be done in free agency at WR.

There are a lot of positives with this move.
The talent level in the WR room just rose to a level we didn't have last year.
Kliffs playbook just expanded with all the gadget potentials Deebo brings.
That gadget potential combined with JDs mobility will drive DCs even more crazy then just needing to focus on JD
This allows AP and company to be able to focus on other areas heading into FA then the draft

I don't think it is controversial to say they could still go WR in FA. They do need to bring in at least one more WR.

When you’re talking currency of assets it’s a valid conversation. You likely won’t find a player of the same caliber as Deebo Samuel in the 5th round, so the sliding scale of cost vs return is affected. Deebo Samuel at his number (which is kind of a grey area due to a void year) may be more expensive, but also a lot more valuable.

I’m also gonna say something controversial… we might still end up with a 5th round pick

I assume your referring to a JA trade, ST? If so, it would be a positive wash in my book.

Sure - but you still traded a 5th round pick :)

Timing matters to a certain extent as well. If Jayden Daniels has just an ordinary rookie season and this team entered 2025 coming off say a 5 or 6 win season, I probably wouldn't be too enthused about acquiring Samuel. However, when you factor in the level at which Daniels performed in year one, the run to an NFC Championship game, and the cap space, you can't fault Peters for attacking success.

For those (like me) who had some other WR they favored via trade or FA... the other thing you have to consider is what our likelihood of signing your favorite would be, and what the cost would be. For example, if they go after Chris Godwin (my man crush) that's in a whole other stratosphere from Deebo - and he may get much bigger offers than what Peters could live with. He might not WANT to come to DC (I know we are a more attractive destination by far now, but quality of team and QB are not the only factors that drive player decisions).

In other words, it's fine if you wanted someone else. That doesn't mean that player is or was a legitimate option or probability.

That being said... could you imagine a threesome of McLaurin, Deebo Samuel, and Chris Godwin?

I could!

I get the Godwin love and agree that he and Terry would have been dynamic together. Tampa still wants to sign Godwin so there's a chance he is never available.

AP just built up the team and WR talent level before we enter FA. I doubt they also bring Godwin in but the could add a FA like Slayton

This is a great trade IMO. I can't wait to see Deebo breaking tackles and firing up the team late in the game.
