~* Breaking *~ - Commanders trade for Deebo Samuel

I think what I've read is that Deebo is always hurt, but misses few games. He just plays hurt. Mind you, Gary Clark always played hurt. I think 90% of the games he played in he was listed as having some kind of hamstring injury. The question to me, ironically, is does he play too much? Should Kyle have sat him if he was playing hurt and needed some rest or not to be used as a running back where he's going to take heavier hits. One analyst said that on many of his runs with the 49ers last year, there just weren't holes for him to run through. That means he was taking a lot of running back hits and while Deebo is apparently tough and strong those hits do add up.

I remember at the start of the season, Brian Robinson was breaking a lot of tackles. By the end of the season, he was breaking practically none. I think that was because Brian was playing hurt and where he could power through hits early in the year, the lack of push and holes his o line generated for him started to really wear him down.

Yeah, I still don't buy it. San Fran used him as a rushing threat. A lot. You do that with WRs and they are probably going to get banged up occasionally. I still don't think saying he's 'always hurt' is a legit argument.

Not sure. There's a lot of smoke to that "always hurt" rap. Some of it is probably sour grapes. Some of it could be that practically every NFL player plays hurt. It could be, as I said above, he's so tough he plays when he shouldn't and that impacts his productivity (but that I put on the coaches) I do remember a few years ago, Deebo asking the 49ers not to use him as a running back so much.

Missed just two games last season and the season before. His numbers dropped like a rock after getting pneumonia last season. He wasn't the same. But I presume he's fully recovered.

Voted the 30th best player in the NFL as recent as the previous season by his peers.

Perfect fit for this offense. Perfect embodiment of the pay tough style that Quinn keeps pushing.

Great trade IMO.

I like the move although see him more as WR3. Hopefully we don’t overuse him as a RB.
Whether you want to call him a WR2 or 3 or whatever, to me we just got Jayden another weapon and that’s a good thing! Not sure how you would define overuse, but running the ball is one of his strengths, so I would say give him a decent helping of carries. Especially if it takes some of the running off of Jayden’s plate.

They aren't going to bubble wrap him. His ability to play dynamically in a number of ways is why they traded for him. All you have to do is see how they used Austin Ekeler and Zach Ertz in 2024 - both guys with concussion histories and Kliff used both of those guys extremely aggressively. I would expect to see the same thing with Deebo Samuel.

I don't have anything to back this up at the moment, but wasn't being overused as a RB one of the reasons that Deebo was a bit malcontent in SF a while back and apparently was asking for a trade?

Quick thoughts:

- I think he is over-rated vs his numbers other than his 2021 season - he is a legit #2, nothing more
- I think even though over-rated, a 5th round pick is cheap for him
- I think he might be the best run-blocking WR in the league who is still a real threat as a WR
- I think I want to see him line up in the backfield and rush 1-3 times a game, just to keep the D thinking about it
- I think this move makes McLauren, Daniels, and whoever the RB is better

I still don’t know what “overused“ means in this context. Aren’t we just talking about a handful of carries a game? And a lot of those carries were in the red zone, so you would think he likes those opportunities.

He’s scored a lot of rushing TDs over the years so we would be foolish not to use him down there. If I were a DC having to defend against both he and Jayden is kind of a nightmare.

I'm not suggesting we shouldn't use him that way. I'm just stating that I believe that was part of his gripe when he reportedly asked SF for a trade a couple of years ago.

I don't mind the price we paid, but just don't like 'slash' players. To me that just means a guy who is pretty good at a couple of things, rather than really good at one. And in the NFL, you kinda really need to be really good at something. I have no doubt we'll find a way to use him but my guess is if Deebo Samuel is the offseason acquisition that makes the biggest impact on offense next year, we're in for a long season.

Has he lost a step? Who knows. Everyone likes to think it was a no-brainer now, but we all forget Saquon Barkley was coming off a mediocre 900 yard, 6 TD season where he averaged less than 4 yards per carry, and had a history of missing significant playing time due to injury when the Eagles signed him. Samuel may return to form here like Barkley did last year. Sometimes a change of scenery makes a world of difference.

Yes exactly, but only if you have someone who is creative enough. Even though I was pretty unimpressed with Kliff's overall understanding of the run game, he is definitely creative. He will figure out ways to make the combination of Jayden, Terry, Deebo, and <insert RB name> very worrisome for any defense. I also think a critical element others have mentioned is the run blocking. It was said last year that was the clincher on us getting Noah Brown. So, now you have Deebo and maybe Noah coming back. To me, the concerns are locker room fit and injury. I don't think you can easily predict the second one, I'm ok with that. I guess I have some open concerns on locker room, partly because so much of I do think some of the success last year was derived from amazing chemistry. I worry about a one-year guy who really wants his stats to be up there.

Regarding how he is perceived. I think this has a lot to do with which circles you run in. All I've heard for a year is that he's washed, fat, and disgruntled.

With that as the backdrop, I'd say that he's been under-rated by many. I don't personally see him as a #1 / #2 / #3 type of WR - he's like the old school H-back role (with more receiving upside). We still need a #2 WR, but I'm happy to have Deebo as a chess piece.... given the low cost.

For anyone concerned about whatever gripes to fallout he had with SF, there’s no chance Peters makes this trade if they have potential to be real issues here.

Deebo is going to be a nightmare in the slot for this team. He’s also going to have a more prominent role in this offense than he had of late in SF.

I’m still lukewarm on this deal—I don’t mind the 5th rounder, it’s the $17m in cap space. I fully expect him to come in motivated and ready, so we shall see. If we can get a receiver who can really take the top off a defense that would be terrific.
