1000% agree burgold. This is going to be a test of where Rivera’s priorities are - bringing in someone safe, known, from his era or taking a risk on someone less known, younger, with possibly a higher ceiling.

I doubt he goes the 2nd route.

Rivera is the a bowl of soup and a sandwich type.

Known, comfortable, safe, and uninspiring.

Ah, but then there's soup and then there's SOUP. ;)

Yeah you and Boone are probably right. He'll go for the luke warm chicken noodle.

Well, at least it's not Campbell's mushroom soup. Blech!

Byron Leftwich now available. Hard pass for me.
I don't know of any big connection between Rivera and Leftwich, so I would doubt it. It just seems like Rivera is hell bent on getting buddies in at this point. That alone, in a fantasyworld where I run the franchise, would be grounds for dismissal. The NFL is rife with different forms of nepotism to the ruin of quality, in my opinion.

I mean, I would guess you think the same way I do, which is I'd rather they "take a shot" on someone new before turning to Leftwich. I doubt Rivera sees it that way though; he would probably go Leftwich first. I think before he goes there, he will find someone in his circle to help or bring over. That is my guess anyway.

OC’s seem to be the fall guys this year.

So, an interesting note from Ben Standig of The Atlantic - apparently Turner was never on board with the Wentz acquisition.

More interesting is that the Wentz trade happened on March 9 and the news of Turner's pending extension broke on March 13.

I'm beginning to wonder if we are more functional in terms of business dealings today than we have ever been. Maybe we are only more functional on the field.

I assume you’re suggesting they extended Turner just to make him feel better they ignored his protests on Wentz? If so, yeah, that’s not a good reason to extend a coach, but sounds exactly like something Rivera would do.

It's even worse if he did it, just to end up firing him at the end of the season.

Turner (as far as we know) doesn't jump off the page as a 'made guy' in the NFL, so it's not like he necessarily has the ear of the inner circle of coaches in the NFL, but man... if you bring in a QB the OC hates, and you covince him to stay by giving him a multi year deal... only to can him when it blows up in everyones faces? Not saying Turner should still be our OC (i've made it abundantly clear how i feel about him) but damn that's just dirty business.... dirty business that won't be over looked by the coaches who DO have the ear of that inner circle.

All good points, and the incestuous nature of the NFL coaching community probably means that all Turner needs is like one or two guys, and then it probably quickly leads out to a large group of people. I'm not sure the Commanders name could be more M-U-D than it already is anyway, but yeesh. This would seem like a good stab at sinking the ship below the sea floor.

the bigger issue is that Rivera was brought in to change the culture around this team. If this is how he conducted business... we're right back to where we were when we hired him.

Again, this is all hypotheitcals and speculation on my part... but it wouldn't make a ton of sense for you to give Turner an extension when you did if there was a more logical reason.... or at least I dont see it....

If Turner's offenses had been consistently Top 5 and you felt you had to keep him, this would make sense.

If his offenses had a long history of exploding in Year 3, this would make sense.

If he was a hot off-season name and you felt you had to do this to keep him in-house, this would make sense.

None of those things were true though. If the only reason this was done was to appease him when the team brought in a QB he didn't want, it was done for the wrong reasons. Especially if, as has been speculated on, Wentz was a Snyder pick more than a Rivera pick.

And #3 is ONLY valid if either #1 or #2 are true.

Setting aside what Turner’s feelings were about Wentz, he had done nothing to warrant an extension AND season 3 was not substantially different than 1 or 2. So extending and then firing him all within the same year is incompetence no matter how you slice it.

I’m ready to be Rivera-free and it can’t happen soon enough.

Agree. And it's arguable that all three QBs had about the same level of subpar production.

If it were only Heinicke you could say he overachieved given Heinicke's arms and skillset. If it was only Wentz, he could have said, "Told ya so." If it were only Howell, he could have said, "rookie."

When it's all of them. It's you.

i'm not seeing a logical arguement against this...
