Not bagging on you Mike - maybe someday we’ll have the kind of franchise great coaches want to gravitate to but not yet.

I know. Funny is funny.

I dream of how nice it can be for our grandkids one day!

I wish it were not public knowledge simply because it takes some of the mystery out of what the team might do in the draft but otherwise, I think I'm pretty good with it.

I’m good with it. Going into the offseason camps as QB1 doesn’t preclude bringing in a reasonably priced FA veteran or keeping Heinicke.

And saying so makes it clear to any OC candidate that they will be tasked with developing an (almost) untested youngster. That’s an import little detail right there.

I'm good with it.

I'm on record as being in favor of rolling with a rookie (or in this case a sophmore) for 2023.

Howell was pretty well thought of until his last year at College, but his drop in numbers had explainable reasons. He dropped below where many thought he was going to be taken. He showed against Dallas that I think he belongs in the NFL at some level. I certainly think talentwise he's a step up from Wentz or Heineke (or at least in raw potential he is). We may have to sit through a bit of a growing pains year, but I'm okay with that. To be honest I don't think he can be worse than anything we've had here for a while.

I hated the idea of trading or signing an older Vet in FA, like Carr. We know Heineke can win in a pinch. We know Howell has something that's worth exploring. I'd like to draft another QB project (and keep doing it every year till we find a diamond) and spend all that Wentz cash of FAs that can plug into the gaps we have across the roster.

I think it was Boone that said he reckoned we'd be in the playoffs if Howell had started sooner. I kinda think I agree.

New owner next year...could be the turning point in the Franchise.

Boone was right. After barely beating the worst team in the league and moving to a 2-6 record, that was the time for a bold move. Everyone other than those invested in Wentz already knew that his signing was a mistake. Moving to Heinicke, a player whose flaws led to the Wentz signing, instead of Howell was the safe move made by a coach who knew his future could be on the line.

I'm curious about the context.

Did Rivera take it upon himself to just volunteer this information? If so, i don't see much to gain.

If he called some OC candidates and they asked "who is QB1" to which he said "The plan right now is Howell" and those OC candidates took it upon themselves to communicate that? It doesn't bother me so much.

That sounds A LOT different

As it should be. I don’t want him to simply be anointed. Do it the old-fashioned away…earn it. My main concern remains the same though, I don’t trust this group to make the decision. Hopefully the new OC will have a voice that matters in the process.

Fair. I'd love to do that a good bit of the time.

Makes some sense how explosive that offense was at times...

They also had Hill and Waddle

Shurmur is a total crapshoot. Godawful as an OC for the Rams and most recently the Broncos. Pretty to very good as an OC for the Eagles and Vikings.

Which guy are you going to get?

Shurmur also seems like a pretty uninspired, safe pick. Can someone be a safe, uninspired pick and a total crapshoot? Apparently so. In many ways, I'd rather go for the QB coach or receivers coach ready to make his leap up to OC. It could be that Rivera likes gray beards with fewer question marks, but I think if he wants to stay with the new owner the best way is not to play it safe but swing for greatness.
