I spent a good bit of time looking into the last few sales of NFL teams and leaks were few and far between. There isn't any future in it for anyone with legit inside knowledge of the transaction.
The deadline for initial offers was indeed just before Christmas. We also have reports that one interested party, Matt Ishbia, has dropped out due to winning the bid to buy the Phoenix Suns ($4 Billion).
There is also the question of when the new owner assumes control in a meaningful way. I assume that can't happen until both the league finance committee and the owners vote on approving the sale. The finance committee has worked remotely before, but the owners have always voted in person at a regularly scheduled league meeting. The next one of those is at the end of March.
Yes, the Commissioner can call for a special meeting to approve the transaction but if that were to happen here it would be the first time it had happened. There are no current indications that Goodell would do it.
Was I the new guy, no matter how badly I want to get going with my new toy, I'm not writing anyone a check until such time as the league has approved the transaction, and were I the current owner, there is no way I would be letting the new guy or his advisors make changes to the team until I had my money.
While we all want this to go fast, I doubt any of us want it to go fast as much as the bidders. They are all likely looking at the same issues we are while lamenting the timing and a possible lost year. I believe we will know who the new guy is by sometime in February but I don't believe the transition will take place until April, after the league meetings in March.
