Not sure if anyone of us will see this team win a trade in our lifetime. They’re just bad at it

I'm sorry I dont agree, and this is coming from someone who has little confidence that Wentz is anywhere near enough to lead this team to where it needs to be.

2 x 3rd round picks is not expensive AT ALL in the current NFL, when it means you're getting a starting calibre QB. Wentz may not be on the same level as he was when he was in Philly, but a 4 - 1 TD to INT ratio is something we ALL would have begged the heavens to provide us. Taylor Heinicke is not capable of that split, and that happened with Wentz in a season that largely people believed he was wreckless and 'trying to hard' as a QB.

Wentz's cap number is $28 mil for 2022, but the team has total control going forward. He can be released if he bombs out after 2022 with ZERO financial ramifications. IF Wentz is able to play well, the team can keep him rostered and his cap number actually goes DOWN over the next 2 seasons, providing more flexibility if he provides the ability to be a starting QB.

Getting Wentz allows us to use 11 for BPA, or trade back and get a QB as well as other assets. Wentz + Chris Olave is a better addition to 2022 than Taylor + Malik Willis. If we choose a QB, the pressure is now delayed (this is Washington we're talking about, if we draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round every fan on Twitter is going to be screaming for them to be put in the game as soon as Wentz makes ANY mistake) so that QB is not asked to walk in week 1 and be the savior. There is no pressure. Wentz balls out and we've got our QB. Wentz faulters, and now you focus development on the rookie while not having the pressure of an Alex Smith, cap busting type of contract to look forward to.

There is NO way we could go to Terry McLaurin at the negotiating table and say "Please sign with us, we have Taylor Heinicke." It's going to be a lot different coversation when you've got a QB that can put the ball 60 yards down field with regularity. I would imagine McLaurin is EXCITED with this move. He led the team in contested catches last season because half the throws to him brought the DB back into the play.


Look, the Red flags are there with Wentz, and I have about |--| that much confidence that this ends up changing the dynamic of the team... but with what QBs are costing, this trade is low risk... if he blows up and balls out, we've got a guy, if he bombs.. it's VERY easy to get out of and move on from.

One can only hope Terry wants to reman on site, not sure if having Wentz throw to him will make a difference or not. He may well end up going the Cousins/Scherff route the hell out of town.

On the flip side, there’s no guarantee anyone will restructure this off-season, and players who’ve been playing well may want to go elsewhere for an established winning formula.guys like Collins who excelled at LB may say “no discount” and prefer to be cut.

Wentz may be on the hook for THIS season but if he shits the bed this deal looks even worse than it already is. I get the going rate for qb’s is ridiculous, but this is a player who’s been moved from not one but two teams in a 5 year span. It’s been broadcasted for weeks that Indy was getting rid of him one way or the other.

By taking on his whole salary, which is damn near all of our available cap, the team is riding w/ him for the next couple years at minimum. Those assets the skins gave up in draft capital & salary cap are bigger than any return CW has shown thus far in his career. If anything he’s labeled a bad teammate.

If he balls out (unlikely) then it lessens the pain and rash decision making of the deal. If he shits the bed, coupled with no decent QB draft pick in the wings then Ron has put the team behind everyone in the division for another year at minimum. ESPECIALLY if this contract prohibits not only retaining our own guys like TM, but getting new blood from other teams.

We needed to take on his cap hit in full because? Wentz against the Cowboys is not better than Heinicke. Wentz actually has a connection with Trevon Diggs. Those INTs would have been beautiful throws if it was Eagle to Eagle instead of Eagle to Cowboy.

3rd round picks aren't insignificant either. You can get a workhorse back, elite TE, or some quality special teamer.


The best explanation is that Indy is a small market team and wanted a financial bailout. Snyder, being overt sinner of the owners...was obliged to provide such charity and welfare either to buy back goodwill or the other "fathers" forced him to.
 
What part of ‘I didn’t want to go after a vet’ wasn’t clear, lol. Yeah - it was expensive. Maybe they would’ve released him or maybe other teams were in the mix. You think you know but none of us do. Wentz is solid overall - at least by what we’ve had to work with since Cousins was here. I wish we’d just drafted a guy. Hell - I’d be willing to give Heinicke another year. But it’s not an insane move. The salary is middle of the pack and we’re only on the hook for 1 season. I don’t know what else to say about it.
 
This was the only deal that was going to happen for a FA QB or in a trade. Even though the offer for Russ Wilson was better, he preferred to go to Denver. Jimmy G. took Washington off of his list of teams to be traded to. Trubisky is all but signed by the Giants. Carr wants to stay in LV. Ditto for Cousins in Minnesota. Mariota doesn't view Washington as a viable option. Same for Bridgewater and Winston. Rodgers just signed back with Green Bay. Watson simply can't happen and you know why.

Yes, Dan Snyder is the reason all of this is happening, but he hasn't been involved with running the team for more than two years. The stigma remains, but it will take time for it to go away.

So what is left? Several teams were interested in Wentz prior to this afternoon. He was due to be released next week and the chances of signing him would've been difficult. This was the only option available.

The front office has a low regard for this QB draft class. The interest is not there and that is after meeting each QB at the Combine, Senior Bowl, and East-West Shrine Game.

Washington quarterbacks have thrown for 27 or more TDs six times in franchise history. Wentz has done it three times in the last six years, including 2021. And he had 7 INTs last season. Way better than Heinicke.

Also, Wentz has never had a receiver go over 500 yards in a season when he has thrown for 4,000 yards or more. Terry will feast next year. Logan Thomas will shine. J.D. McKissic will roll. The new star WR that will be taken in the first round will be a stud.

Losses are not harmful for the long game. Build up a super team so that we actually become a QB away three years from now. We need backers, DBs, online depth and higher draft position helps.

We’re not a QB away and Wentz is a side grade at best in relevant games like against the Cowboys. Heinicke hero balled because of inexperience. Wentz hero balls because it’s him compensating for inadequacies. He’s a headstrong fool who cannot learn. But the terms of the trade site bailed Indy financially and gave them compensation for a colossal mistake.

We're absolutely a QB away, at least from being a playoff team - I don't know why you say we aren't? They are trying to get better. You can dislike the pick up but every team in the league who doesn't have a bonafide franchise QB is looking to upgrade - they aren't waiting for 3 years to 'build'. It's not Carson Wentz's fault this franchise has sucked for 30+ years.

This is no surprise. Still a shame. I felt like Allen had a real shot before he got injured. Good guy and class act. Good luck Kyle!

 
Well, that certainly seems to point at drafting someone somewhere in this year's draft, doesn't it?

They are letting Allen go the way of FA. Gilbert only signed a one year deal so he will also be an UFA this year. That will leave Carson and Taylor as the only 2 QBs on the roster by the end of next week.

I think this move removes the panic 'need' to draft a guy at 11. It opens the door to now being able to go multiple different directions

1. If THE GUY is there at 11 (i think Malik Willis is likely the ONLY option to fall under this category because he's probably the one who needs a year or more to sit and develop) you can take that guy with no pressure on him to walk in day 1 as the starter / savior of the franchise. You have control of Wentz for 3 years, but can get out quickly if the rookie proves they're ready sooner

2. Pick BPA at 11 (there will be some serious firepower as far as WRs and CBs go here) and if a guy you like falls into the 2nd round you can then take them but you're not holding your breath hoping they make it to your next pick.. if they're there, great, if not, next year is supposed to be a better draft crop any way.

3. Trade OUT of 11 and move back, adding more picks. If Malik Willis is available at 11, the phone may ring... Pittsburgh is a team I could see (who picks 20th) wanting to get up to 11 to get their guy. If we were to move back to 20, my hope would be next years 1st round pick. That may be 'too much' but we would have the leverage here. Trading back to 20, there will still be value at WR, or a guy like Nakobe Dean. Plenty of options here depending on what you get in return... be that a 1st next year, or a 2nd + this year. Two picks in the 2nd round... could easily see a guy like Ridder or Strong there.


There are about 4 or 5 other scenarios but these cover most of the bases. A lot of things can happen now, and I do think we all need to come to the realization that ONE of those things... is now we've bought ourselves a 'prove it year' and if Wentz falls apart, next years crop of QBs is supposed to be markedly better than this one. If Wentz balls out, you've got him for 2 more years at <$25mil per year which is a bargain for a starting QB...

One scenario i didnt suggest because it would be absolutely destroyed, is trading up for this kid.

He may be the best player in this draft and that's not hyperbole. It would shock me if he doesn't go top 5 so I'm simply not allowing myself to even believe he's available at 11, but if somehow, some way he fell, he's about the ONLY defensive player I'd get truly excited about taking at that spot. I want offense, I want weapons, I want speed, unless Hamilton is there.... or maybe MAYBE Gardner or Stingley, but even the latter two I'd prefer we get a weapon...
