The 2022 Quarterback Thread

Wentz has arrested mental development. He has PTSD from Foles. There is no way out of that rut. He's always chasing glory...always wanting the heroic play....

He also has to learn the playbook. He's going to be middling at best this year.

So - if Wentz is a bust, what do those moves say about Reich?

Who knows what happened. Agreed it’s a big red flag but always two side to a story.

That's very true.

At a minimum, we didn't give up our 1st or 2nd round pick, so taking a QB there is still a very real possibility. If Wentz can get back to that MVP level he was the year Philly won the Super Bowl (before he got hurt), this looks like a genius move.

Don't be shocked if we trade out of 11 and move back... maybe get back a 3rd rounder and take a developmental QB later in the 1st. If Wentz balls out, so be it, if he faulters, there is a succession plan. Initial reaction, we just lit 2 third round picks on fire... but we will see.

Here's the other thing.. it's the ultimate prove it deal. We can cut him after this season and carry $0 in dead money, if he blows chunks, or we have a successor ready.

This makes a lot more sense - so he’s here for 3 years if we want him.

Another good point b Disco

We've probably got a 3rd rounder in the coffers, especially now that we're not signing a free agent QB.

Trade back from 11 to 15 or so, add a 3rd rounder there, and the investment is minimal...

This should’ve been a new thread btw

Ulitmately, it's Snyder buying indulgences by doing favors for other teams. Wentz is Wentz...someone worse than Derek Carr....maybe equal to Tannehill

I’m not sure who was realistically available who is better? One can argue Trubisky or Winston but they have their own question marks.

Absolutely true. To me, sitting in my armchair, I think the best bet would have been to play through a tough season with Heinicke, strength the team around the 2023 QB. I am not a believer in "the process" stuff they pulled in the NBA / Philly, but you CAN have a longer term plan that just doesn't go to the extreme they did. I just don't believe this deal justifies the upside of Wentz vs Heinicke. Wentz is not some new guy unseen in the NFL.

I do agree with what you said earlier Boone, he has more talent than he gest credit for. One of the reasons that has happened is apparently because he is a bit of a headcase. There are numerous reports of that. It just doesn't feel like a culture fit, it doesn't feel like a significant upgrade, it just feels bad. So the hope here is that they did their due diligence, but this should have been approached very carefully. Nerve-wracking to see, without any benefit of knowing what else they may have done to check this out. On the surface, my biggest concern here is it felt they were building a good culture. Some guys who put work in, didn't complain even in tough times, that kind of thing. We haven't seen or heard that Wentz fits that mold at all.

They suck more than Wentz but we've got enough serious issues that this season should be treated strictly for evaluation and a top 10 draft pick. We could have signed any trash backup to do the same job....

Can’t say I’m a fan of this…at all. Those 3rds could of obtained solid guards or linebackers that are sorely needed. Wentz was probably going to get released anyways.

It was my hope this team would have picked a guy up in the draft, though it appears to me RR had no intention of this. Whether this is from RR feeling pressure from Beelzebub, or bad advice from Mayhew it reeks of desperation.

Just curious, as of now, is there anyone here that holds true confidence in this team’s personnel acquisitions?

I would not be surprised if we trade out of 11 and get back a 3rd round pick in the deal... we're also likely to get a compensatory 3rd rounder for Scherff, so it's very possible we still have a 3rd round pick each of the next two years, just may not be the ones we had a few hours ago.

Dan Snyder is basically paying for his sins and moves like this are his penance as specified by the likes of Father Rooney and Father Mara.

I am having a hard time remembering when we last made a trade/move that on the surface just felt right, especially in the QB department.

There was always something off to me and concerns surrounding the likes of Brunell, McNabb, and Smith. The Wentz move is the same sort of thing - he is likely a bit better than Heinicke, but to trade away two Day 2 picks for that...is it really worth it?

I'm not sitting here today with Wentz and Heinicke on the roster and definitively thinking that this team is any closer to greatness.

That's a problem, especially with Day 2 picks flying out the window in the process.

We can at least say he likely wasnt behind this move. Had we traded for Watson, you could figure Snyder pulled that trigger... this would SHOCK me if Snyder had any part of this move.

If we had a solid personnel department then seeing the team reaquire lost picks would be possible. But, after last years draft & off-season do you trust them to select the proper players? Imho that’s what good GM’s do, like the Colts who just McNabb’d us…again.

I’ll bow out to you guys on the compensatory system, but if we sign a FA guard or any position for that matter cancel out the loss of Scherff?

Snyder is not interested in winning but rather being as incognito as possible while the scandal lives on. The old Dan Snyder wanted to chase wins. This Dan Snyder is chasing invisibility and I wouldn't be surprised if the owners got a few guns to his head to bully him too.

Agreed.

But the question becomes, is he currently in Rivera's ear to start winning ballgames? Was the Wentz move reactionary as a result of limited options available in the QB market and increase heat/pressure from ownership to start producing?

Is it still truly as Dan put it, a "coach-centric approach?" Or is he indirectly still pulling strings by tightening the screws on Rivera?

They have to be on the same 'level' as far as their contract goes. Outside of Allen Robinson or the like, we're not signing anyone on the same level.

Look, i'm as critical as anyone of hte move, but lets not forget that Rivera and company have built this roster with 'cast offs.'

JD McKissic
Bobby McCain
Deandre Carter
Logan Thomas
Taylor Heinicke
Wes Schweitzer
Tyler Larsen
David Mayo

As far as the draft, I can't argue against either one of Rivera's draft.

The last draft we got contributors up and down the draft including a long snapper who's name you never heard (which means he absolutely did his job. I was critical of the Dyami Brown pick til I went back and watched him running open and winning his matchup on a regular basis. That's not to say he's an all pro, or that it was Taylor's fault, but he could have had legit contribution if the circumstances were different. Cosmi looks like a long term starter at RT, John Bates, William Bradley King, and Shaka Toney. The book is far from written with Darrick Forrest and St Juste (who was showing serious potential before he got hurt).

The year before that included Chase Young (yet to be determined) Antonio Gibson, Keith Ismael (filled in admirably considering he was the 4th center to play), Khaleke Hudson (was on PFF's Mid Season All Pro team as a special teamer), Kamren Curl, and James Smith Williams (who filled in well with Young and Sweat out with injuries this past season).

Is Wentz another 'value find' that other teams have chosen to move on from? I dont know, I don't really think so, but I have to say the team has done a great job of evaluating their guys, getting them, and getting the most out of them...
