The 2022 Quarterback Thread

The Wentz move is the same sort of thing - he is likely a bit better than Heinicke, but to trade away two Day 2 picks for that...is it really worth it?

I'm not sitting here today with Wentz and Heinicke on the roster and definitively thinking that this team is any closer to greatness.

That's a problem, especially with Day 2 picks flying out the window in the process.

The front office clearly assesses his talent differently than most fans. If they can get him playing like consistently like he did his rookie year, they may have solved the QB issue for the foreseeable future. It’s not like he’s only had the one good season. His 2021 season was flat out superior to THs and folks are saying he was bad last year.

His arm is infinitely better than Heinicke and he is a better decision-maker with the ball.

There are definitely questions about his character/leadership.

Get ready for this though. I don’t think we draft a QB in this draft, not after giving up a 3rd rounder and swapping for a lower 2nd rounder.

Agreed.

But the question becomes, is he currently in Rivera's ear to start winning ballgames? Was the Wentz move reactionary as a result of limited options available in the QB market and increase heat/pressure from ownership to start producing?

Is it still truly as Dan put it, a "coach-centric approach?" Or is he indirectly still pulling strings by tightening the screws on Rivera?
The move for Wentz makes no sense given the performance of the roster last season.

Wentz comes from the West Coast offense tree. Scott and Rivera use the Coryell tree. That is one year of adaptation and learning. But if the plan is Wentz is out after a year(extremely likely), what is the point?

Wentz is an irresponsible player who doesn't know when to quit, we even won Rivera's first game because Wentz made stupid decisions.

Wentz has shown he is incapable of learning or breaking his habits. His best mentor literally failed to recapture his MVP magic and is calling Washington to sell Wentz.

Indy's Oline "regressed" because of Wentz. But did they forget to play or is it because Wentz doesn't get rid of ball and makes bad decisions? They were "good" when Rivers was QB.

The move for Wentz only makes sense if the Washington team has accepted being a junkyard for other teams' problems. We ain't in the business of making a shiny toy. We're in the business of taking other team's old and broken toys.

Wentz and dumb interceptions go hand-in-hand. He also sets his Oline up fail. Heinicke at least gets the ball out quick and decisively when he's on.

I am trying to find some positives in this news from today in regards to Wentz...

Here is all I can come up with...

We offered a 1st and 3rd reportedly for Matthew Stafford (not enough to get it done).

We offered supposedly three first round picks plus potentially more for Russell Wilson.

We traded two 3rds for Carson Wentz.

At the end of the day, I think that speaks volumes as to what they think Wentz is likely worth. They are likely being realistic about it. They don't see him as being as valuable as the likes of Stafford and Wilson, but obviously see him as being able to give them a better chance at building and winning than Heinicke or any other FA options. We as fans want greatness instantly. Incremental improvement isn't going to sit well when you have lost for 30 years. Wentz will likely give you incremental improvement, the front office probably recognizes that, and maybe at the end of the day, they aren't too concerned about what we think and are just trusting the process. Who knows - maybe that is a good thing and maybe we as fans need to learn how to do that too.

The money piece is a huge part of what angered me about the deal. That said, when it is all said and done, they got guys that sit in front of a spreadsheet all day and can manipulate cap numbers to get things done. Maybe I shouldn't concern myself with the financials.

I've heard the opposite that Wentz gets the ball out quick so you got me curious CP.

According to this, Wentz on average got the ball out faster than Heinicke.... (2.83 seconds vs 2.97). Heinicke REGULARLY got criticized for not getting out quick enough, running around and forcing the ball into bad decisions.

Here is the glossary of what these mean:

in contrast... here is Wilson

Jeez SCP, did Wentz knock up one of your relatives and refuse to pay child support or something?
I took exceptional pleasure in his ineptitude and numerous bad decisions when he was in Philly. I remember one play against the Cowboys. Wentz scrambling to the left, you think he'd throw it away...but boom he holds on to the ball and a turnover happens.

But now he's going to do all that for the team I still maintain allegiance towards....so what was pleasure will now be pain.

I am on record as not wanting to give up picks for any vet. But if they wanted a vet - a) it was going to cost us something and b) they all come with pluses and concerns.

If they can get Wentz playing anywhere near his best level of play though, it’s going to look pretty cheap in retrospect. If they can’t, or worse yet, if he’s gone in a season or two, it was a waste of a couple 3rd rounds and a good sized chunk of cap.

I mean, every lesson on how to NOT operate when a screen is sniffed out is in the above video. Just toss it in the dirt at the intended receiver.

So…

With Wentz taking up most of the remaining current cap space, what does that do to extensions etc of current players like Terry McLaurin?

You know, just when you think you've seen rock bottom in stupid decisions....they go out and give up draft capital for a Qb that would probably have just been cut. And per usual, it seems as the only ones they were bidding against was...themselves.
Shouldn't surprise anyone who is still hanging around on a frayed thread but like rubbernecking at a car accident, you can't help looking at it in a stunned stupor.

Makes one wonder if Ron's first name is actually Moe? It would explain alot.

Doesn’t do anything in terms of McLaurin I don’t believe because he’s under co tract this season and his extension would hit future cap years. It leaves us with little cap room for free agency but have to think they have a plan to free some up or we won’t be very active.

I get that reaction except we don’t know who else wanted Wentz - there are a lot of teams that need a QB. I think ‘waiting for a vet to get cut’ especially a QB is mostly a fan myth/fantasy. There are almost always multiple teams sniffing around.

Word is they originally offered a 4th and 6th and somehow got talked into two thirds.

Always seems like when a team has no leverage(everybody and their Uncle knew the Colts didn't want him) this franchise gives it back to them.

Ron and the two Marty's....might as well be Moe,Larry and Curly.....

Carson Wentz is not a hot commodity. The dude was Trubisky'ing himself.

This is probably Dan taking it doggie style from the other owners and he basically had to give up Washington assets to another team.

He doesn't have to be a hot commodity - setting aside if they SHOULD want him, if they do, and there's even one more team interested, 'waiting for the team to cut him' is off the table.

it has more effect on bringing guys back like McKissic / McCain.

Chances are we now go to Landon with a new deal at a lower number for 2022 and beyond because he's not a premier FS any more. Hybrid LBs don't make the money he's making. If he balks at it, we put him on the block and / or release him prior to the league year. Cutting him saves ~$6.6 mil. Chances are we talk to Flowers and extend him with a lower cap hit in 2022 also and free up additional money.
