The 2022 Quarterback Thread

thats gonna be a hard sell to the franchise... but it may be the move i'm the most comfortable with.

Rivera may be looking at a season on the hot seat... year 3. If we don't have a direction by the end of the year, Rivera could come under fire. I also wonder if tthe fanbase will be patient with that direction if it is centered around a rookie QB. I dont know if a project QB will pacify the powes that be. I think Rivera makes a move for a QB similar to the one he attempted to make for Stafford..

I'm sure he will, but what's changed? Why would a top tier guy want to come here?

I just don't see it happening unless they're willing to give up 3 first round picks and 2 second round picks or something along those lines. We'll see how the fanbase likes that kind of a deal if it happens. There's only one player I'd be willing to do something crazy like that for - and that's (sorry Henry) Russell Wilson.

I hope that this comment doesn't steer the conversation off course, as I know it is a QB thread. However, can Dan Snyder, with all turmoil currently surrounding him really afford to put a guy like Ron Rivera on the hot seat? Ron is about the only ounce of credibility we have had in Washington in a very long time and I find it hard to believe that Snyder can find anybody better in terms of navigating the franchise out of the gutter. That being said, I desperately hope that Ron has the autonomy to make a decision at QB that he deems to be best for the long term viability of the franchise. That is what we will benefit most from - making a choice at the position based on best interests for the franchise, not one's job security. I personally would LOVE to have a Russell Wilson here. However, if Ron and company recklessly make something like that happen for the sake of making The Danny happy, then I believe we ultimately will be doomed to fail once again. In the end, I can fully support whatever decision Rivera makes at QB, provided it is based on HIS vision and plan that is given the time to nurture and grown properly if that makes any sense...

With the hope (pipe dream) of buying a true franchise QB seemingly off the table and a draft class that is universally suspect, the front office is in a very tough spot.

Do Garoppolo, Wentz, Mariotta, Trubisky, etal make your toes tingle? Can one of this year’s draft class QBs be identified and developed beyond the common expectations?

Taylor Heinicke has all of the intangibles that I dream of in a QB. If only tangible arm strength was available on Amazon.

What say you armchair GMs?

This is exactly where the autonomy piece comes in, Chris.

Ron has to be given the autonomy to identify what is best in the long term interests of the franchise, and be able to see his vision through without pressure to win now.

Like you said, we are in a really tough spot with the options that are in front of us.

If we need to punt on winning on 2022 because circumstances are blocking Ron from getting the ideal fit at QB, so be it.

What we can't have is rash decision making because there is pressure from up top to get it done. That's bound to fail as past history has taught us here.

It has to be ALL on Ron's terms, whether that is Wilson, Trubisky, Jimmy, whoever. Then and only then am I okay with it.

Now, in regards to some of the options you threw out there, would I be happy with a Garapollo or instance? I suppose if the price isn't enormous and we carved ourselves out a run first identity, I could maybe live with it. That though, involves also acquiring another back that can complement Gibson and McKissic really well - a banger-type. It seems as though Garopollo is the type that thrives best when complemented by that strong rushing attack, much like Shannahan can throw at you with the 9ers. That all said, if we beef up the run game, do you even need to spend as much as you potentially would to get a Jimmy, or are there other options that can equally get the job done at a lesser price?

It is quite the dilemma for sure and I don't envy the position Rivera is in.

I think at the end of the day, unless we sell the farm for a Wilson-type, the large majority of the other QBs available are going to have a ceiling for overall team success over the next couple years. Are we prepared for that? Is the organization willing to accept squeezing into the playoffs and maybe winning a game? Is that good enough? Or do we truly want to enter the real winning conversation?

I think that's what you base the decision on in terms of the approach.

I think it’s almost always a mistake to say ‘we have to find our long-term QB this off-season’. Now, Rivera didn’t say that, he said ‘we need to upgrade at QB’ and there is a subtle difference. I prefer they draft a QB until they hit on one. If we are going to give up capital I would rather it be to stock up on draft picks so we can hopefully hit on a youngster in the draft. I don’t see us getting a difference making QB in free agency.

That said, are you ok with drafting a QB this year and rolling with Taylor until that draftee is deemed ready?

I absolutely am. I know Heinicke’s arm may prevent him from being a viable NFL starter long-term. But we were a playoff team even with him under center minus the ridiculous injuries this past season. Most fans would pillory me for this position but you can’t have it both ways - demand we find a true starter but then show impatience if they can’t do it in one off-season. I do still think TH has upside.

I am leaning that way more and more. I love Taylor’s athletic ability, competitiveness, and leadership traits. Bringing in a Jimmy G type will cost some draft capital plus a load of cap space and I just don’t see that as a desirous situation.

I completely agree with the idea that if you don’t like a QB this year where you are in the draft, the best way to get one next year is to stock up on draft picks for that year. The Giants have picks 5 and 7, while the Eagles have 15, 16, and 19. Maybe you get stuck with mid round picks like the Eagles, but you could also get 2 in the top 10. That gives you a shot to take a QB plus fill another need, or move up if you need to. I know trading back is never easy because you need a trade partner. But I like what Philly and NYG did last year. I just hate they are in the same division with all that potential young talent coming in. The Redskins can do the same thing this year IF and only IF, the guy they want is not there. They may see a great player fall that they can’t pass up.

I don't think Jimmy G fetches much, the 49'ers need his cap space and they either trade or release him. Smart teams would know this as Deebo Samuel is going to command stupid money and then they have Bosa they could possibly extend. I don't see Jimmy G netting more than a 3rd round pick based off this scenario. Then again we as in (football genius Mike Scammaahan) sent a 2nd and another 3rd or 4th don't recall for a washed up McNabb.

IMHO if you can't get a long term veteran answer, there is no point in acquiring a veteran to be a bridge.. you already have that and it's very inexpensive. I am not a fan of spending assets to get a QB that you're not confident is the answer... especially at $20Mil a year.

Is Jimmy G capable of taking this team where it needs to be? No i don't think so. I think he's in about as good a spot as a QB can be in right now in San Fran. If he can't be the 'x' factor type QB to win there, he aint gonna get it done here. This team needs a play maker at QB, not a game manager.

I think Wentz is more of a play maker, and he is a lot more likely to get hot like Flacco did with the Ravens, than Jimmy G ever would be.... but I'm still not sold he's the guy, so I don't really want to give up much to find out. If we can give up a 6th round pick to see if he can play at the MVP level he's flashed at... sure. If we can get him as a free agent, if he gets cut, on a short term prove it deal? I can handle that... but I don't think you go into 2022 thinking he's the long term answer at the position... and we need the long term answer.

Fans are not going to be comfortable if we go into next season with Taylor has a starter unless we draft someone, but I really don't care. I will say that IF we don't draft a QB at 11, and one of these guys ends up being a stud that we could have taken there, we're going to have a major problem because going into year 4 without a 'future' at QB... you better damn well be right and we better not see another Mac Jones type season out of one of these other guys.

I think this sentiment is going to gain more and more traction over the next 2 and a half months.... obviously depending on what we do in Free Agency

11. Washington Commanders – QB Malik Willis, Liberty: His attributes were on full display during Senior Bowl week – the big arm, the powerful legs and an alpha personality. Sure, Willis will have to overcome the perception he hasn’t played against big-time competition while proving he can be more consistent. But Washington needs a Commander, and he has all the ability in the world … and time to harness it behind Taylor Heinicke if Willis isn't ready to play immediately.

The draft is certainly the way to go imho. There may not be an earth shattering prospect identified, but success can be obtained with proper coaching. After last seasons draft it’s very difficult to get behind this FO to find that kid of the future. Not to forget Turner’s inability to stick to the run, which helps all QB’s thrive.

The team should kick the tires on every potential fa but by no means sell the farm for him. Regardless of free agency they should take the BQBA with their first pick, or at the latest their second. By waiting until the 2nd round they can either trade down for more picks, or grab a difference making wr, rb or te with #11.

I tend to agree. I don't really care that the skirts arent being blown up right now. Wanna know the last 'weak' draft class? 2017. Mitch Trubisky went no. 2 overall. Then Mahomes went 10 and Desean Watson went 12. I'm not saying we're going to get one of those two simply because we pick 11th, because the players are different... but what i'll say is that there are almost ALWAYS good QBs available, and a lot of it, as you pointed out, is coaching.

I've actually taken on the QB breakdown of the draft for the BGO Blind Pig that we will be doing as the draft approaches, and there is talent in this draft. I'm not saying there is a slam dunk, but last year was supposed to be the mosted talented draft class we've seen in a long time, and Mac Jones was far and away the best rookie QB.... the 2nd best statistically? Davis Mills, 3rd round pick out of Stanford that went to Houston and was forced to play because of a chain of events.

I'm not saying that we need to wait til the 3rd round because IMHO this draft is very top heavy. The best QBs are likely the top 6, then there's A TON of room before you get into the rest of the pack. I think we could see 6 QBs go in the first 2 rounds, and then not another QB go til 5th or 6th unless someone launches up the boards because of the Combine.

In addition to whatever draft picks are included in a trade- Garoppolo has a ‘22 cap hit of $26,950,000 and Wentz’s is $28,294,000.

Worth it? Not to me.

An additional concern for me about Carson Wentz is that he doesn’t ever seem particularly liked/popular by his teammates, coaches, or front offices.

I think that matters in a leader.

Do I want an elite QB? Yes, yes I do.

Am I willing to mortgage the future (and maybe a lot of the future) to get him? No, no I'm not.

The defense gave up 24 or more points per game last year 8 times. That is just shy of half our games. We had at least 4 of those in hand enough to win if the defense doesn't go AWOL, which puts us in the playoffs.

TH4 is not a long-term answer here, I don't think. Even though I love so much about the man. He just lacks the physical tools you associate with today's elite NFL signal-caller.

Having said that, if we resolve the defensive issues, pick up a couple more weapons on offense, and standardize on a system that emphasizes the run more than the pass, we are a playoff team, with Taylor under center, right now.

I don't feel the need for a desperation move at the QB position this year.

I also don't see Ron under pressure internally this year. Snyder gave Jay Effing Gruden 5 years when we could all see he was a mess after 18 months. Ron is NOT a mess.

This CLEARLY is just speculative and not really supported by any info... and his job is to 'make headlines' so I think there's a good of that bit too.

But a link is a link, even a shallow one.
