With the hope (pipe dream) of buying a true franchise QB seemingly off the table and a draft class that is universally suspect, the front office is in a very tough spot.
Do Garoppolo, Wentz, Mariotta, Trubisky, etal make your toes tingle? Can one of this year’s draft class QBs be identified and developed beyond the common expectations?
Taylor Heinicke has all of the intangibles that I dream of in a QB. If only tangible arm strength was available on Amazon.
What say you armchair GMs?
This is exactly where the autonomy piece comes in, Chris.
Ron has to be given the autonomy to identify what is best in the long term interests of the franchise, and be able to see his vision through without pressure to win now.
Like you said, we are in a really tough spot with the options that are in front of us.
If we need to punt on winning on 2022 because circumstances are blocking Ron from getting the ideal fit at QB, so be it.
What we can't have is rash decision making because there is pressure from up top to get it done. That's bound to fail as past history has taught us here.
It has to be ALL on Ron's terms, whether that is Wilson, Trubisky, Jimmy, whoever. Then and only then am I okay with it.
Now, in regards to some of the options you threw out there, would I be happy with a Garapollo or instance? I suppose if the price isn't enormous and we carved ourselves out a run first identity, I could maybe live with it. That though, involves also acquiring another back that can complement Gibson and McKissic really well - a banger-type. It seems as though Garopollo is the type that thrives best when complemented by that strong rushing attack, much like Shannahan can throw at you with the 9ers. That all said, if we beef up the run game, do you even need to spend as much as you potentially would to get a Jimmy, or are there other options that can equally get the job done at a lesser price?
It is quite the dilemma for sure and I don't envy the position Rivera is in.
I think at the end of the day, unless we sell the farm for a Wilson-type, the large majority of the other QBs available are going to have a ceiling for overall team success over the next couple years. Are we prepared for that? Is the organization willing to accept squeezing into the playoffs and maybe winning a game? Is that good enough? Or do we truly want to enter the real winning conversation?
I think that's what you base the decision on in terms of the approach.
