The 2022 Quarterback Thread

Kind of what was assumed....

I also think we need to consider this as a very possible route the team opts to go.

He's more accomplished than anyone on the roster

He'll likely cost less than the big 3

He'll likely cost less than Jimmy G while IMHO being more of a difference maker.

I'm not saying it's the route I want to go... just reason's the team could choose to take a look at him.

I’m confused. Are you saying if Carr declines an extension?

Matthew Stafford had a pretty gutsy performance tonight in the Super Bowl and helped will that Rams team to victory in what looked like a pretty bleak situations for them in the 4th quarter up until the last drive.

We all know that Rivera targeted him to be the guy for Washington.

To me that is very reassuring and reflects well on Ron. Maybe we should trust this group to identify the next QB in Washington.

We just have to be willing to push our chips to the middle of the table and go all in and not look back now.

I'm not a huge Wentz fan. That first season of his in Philly, he looked like Joe Burrow does now. What a mirage that turned out to be. I don't think he's much of a leader TBH and his teammates don't seem to like him much which is a big red flag. Can't stay healthy and he's very inconsistent. Might he be the best we can do in free agency? Yeah. All the talk about swinging big isn't going to matter much. I can't imagine we lure a top QB here. We'll have to do it the hard way, find a gem in the draft.

I thought Burrow was the better of the two, but happy for Stafford who deserves good things after being in purgatory for so long. If the Bengals OL could block worth a damn, the Bengals win it going away. Btw - I have to wonder if Burrow didn't finish the game with an ACL or MCL (or both) tear. That injury he had was pretty ugly. Might even have fractured his tibula or fibula.... something in that knee visibly moved as he went down. Hope he's okay but I'm betting he's not.

Pretty weak game all around compared to the Divisional and Conference rounds.

True... but remember how many absolute blowout Super Bowls we've had to endure. At least both teams showed up and it came down to the wire.

That game wasn’t the highest quality game. But that was a good ending which covers up the fact there were too many punts. McVay really overthought the game. He came out conservative early. And he thought he could win by letting Kupp occupy a double team and going the other way. When they finally started throwing to Kupp on the last drive, they go down and win.

Aaron Donald is the most game changing defensive player in the league and he showed it again tonight. This is what is needed in Washington. Whether it’s Allen, Young, Sweat, or some other guy, a defensive player who can take over a game is a must. And a coach who can move them around and adjust to the double teams like the Rams did tonight.

Also, Donald and Kupp should have been co-MVPs. They don’t win that game without either being dominant.

I made this point on Twitter.

I'm growing very tired of people saying "We suck at drafting QBs" or "I don't trust this Front Office to evaluate a QB." The 30 years of QB wasteland we've been in has nothing to do with the current decision makers and evaluators. Ron Rivera didn't draft RG3, he didnt mishandle the Kirk Cousins situation, didnt draft Dwayne Haskins, trade for McNabb, or any of the other moves we made at that position that blew up in our faces. You know what he did do? He wanted Stafford. The guy who's waking up this morning a Super Bowl Champion. Stafford was the opposite of Alex Smith. He had NOTHING around him in Detroit. The argument for Alex Smith was look at his record. Meanwhile Stafford was the opposite of that. Rivera and Co were willing to give up a fair amount to get Stafford and Stafford did not want to come here. We can't blame Rivera for that, but like you said CH, it does give you a level of reassurance that not only is he willing to 'go get his guy' but they didn't make a poor choice in who their guy was last offseason. I think it means the people in Ashburn (most of them) may actually know what they're doing.

That's all true except for one thing. It IS our fault that we have had Front Office people who let the ****ing megalomaniac owner overrule the scouting experts and waste 1st round picks on a QB who isn't an NFL QB. He's still here and whether he's wearing a hoodie or not. We can want to believe something like that could never happen again, but does anyone really believe Ron or Hurney or Mayhew can tell him to shut up or get out? So 'fault'? No. But there is real, organization dysfunction that has gotten in the way of our finding winning coaches and starting QBs in the draft for 30 years.

All that being said, I 99% agree with you. And the bigger point would be, you have to keep trying. If anything, it's been a failure to draft QBs that has hurt us. The one time we drafted a QB that no one thought we 'needed' he turned out to be the closest thing to a franchise QB we've had in forever. I'd argue that you draft a QB every draft. It's too important a position not to.

I agree, but I got into a debate with someone the other day that said "I DONT WANT US TO DRAFT A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND BECAUSE WE SUCK AT IT" and my simple response is "How many first round QBs has Rivera taken."

I've also heard "I don't want to trade up in the first round because look what happened with RG3." Again. Different evaluators, coaches, and circumstances.

I've also heard "I don't want to trade for a QB because look at McNabb and Alex Smith."

I just wanted to point out that Rivera and co. WANTED Stafford and were willing to spend, but the reason he's not here has nothing to do with their ability to pick THEIR GUY. Just that they might actually know what they're doing. They also didn't panic and trade up for a rookie in a relatively weak class. Mac Jones was the top rookie QB this year and he's playing for a coach that won 6 rings with a 6th round pick. Yes Brady is considered the GOAT but Belechick had a part in his development....

I'd rather run Heinicke for another season than pick up Wentz, cost effectiveness and also Wentz just doesn't seem to have "do whatever it takes" gear. His tangibles definitely better than what we've had but desire plays a big role as well as talent.

The QB picture might look a lot more clear in the upcoming weeks, the first domino to drop will be Rodgers decision. I don't think any team is going to try and make a major "splash" before the reigning MVP makes up his mind (now this is barring that he does make a decision by March 3rd).

Someone would pay that - and gladly - if not for who the guy apparently is.

Oh I agree someone will, if not damn close to it. That’s a ton of potential & current assets to give up, more than I would do. A Tonya Harding shot to the knee at minimum regarding developing a quality roster.

My prediction is, we end up with Mitch Trubisky and maybe draft a kid. Not sure I'd hate it.
