QB or not QB

Minnesota getting that extra #1 pick from Houston is big for them. They now have the ammo to move up,

Wow, McCarthy sure has had a meteoric rise.

When I saw that Minnesota signed Sam Darnold I had to believe there was another move coming.

Sam only saw limited action in SF as a backup last year and didn't really do anything that would lead you to believe he was going to start.

You would think Arizona would not pass on Harrison. Maybe they aren’t sold on him or have another guy they like. But as of now, they lost their 2 top wide receivers from last year. They want to upgrade that spot. Maybe they still get a big one, but it would be hard to imagine them trading out with Harrison on the board.

My az comment was just stating that the value of those two first wont get to a higher spot in round 1

There are 3 or 4 receivers that are projected to go in the top 12-15 picks.

If AZ received the #12, #23 and a pick next year, I would do that if I were the GM there.

I do find it odd when teams trade only draft picks this far from the draft. You don’t know who is available at that spot to move up or down. Trading a player for picks, sure. Moving that much before a single player has been picked is just odd to me.

I understand what you mean, but part of the reason it makes sense is in your post. You don't know what you don't know. Draft day will often be too late to make those moves, so here are things you CAN know up-front:
- you can have an idea of where big "pockets" of guys you target are going to fall. In other words, let's say you think a guy may go in the 5th, but it's possible he goes in the 4th or falls to the 6th. Or, you think a guy may go in the 3rd, but you think it's also possible he drops to the 5th.
^ when you set up your board, you can make sure you have a decent number of picks within those general areas if that is true.
^ even without that level of detail, if you have a rough idea of the talent level in a particular draft divided into "draft days" - you can say that there is a certain value in moving up without having an absolute picture on what it's going to get you. You just know that you leapfrogged over certain teams (again, a knowable thing; which teams you leapfrog and maybe how they compare to you in need).

It is a very fluid situation though, so things get dicey when you dive too deeply and assume too much. The best thing to do in my opinion is stay "macro" and look at a slightly higher level. That is where you can have real predictive value with highly chaotic larger systems; only at the macro level.

Wow. I don't understand why the Steelers sign Wilson and then trade for Fields.

Surely the plan is to start Wilson? And if they start Wilson, how does Fields get enough game time for the Steelers to know whether to pick up his option or sign him to a longterm deal (which will be big $$$)?

Color me seriously confused.

This offseason has been...bizarre.

I guess they figure that both contracts are cheap enough that whichever one proves best can go forward while the other is cut. If it's not Fields, I don't think anyone will look sourly at a sixth for a one year backup rental. Don't remember if Wilson was traded for or acquired as a free agent.

I saw posted somewhere (i believe it was Chris in another thread) that the 5th year option does not carry over to a new team, that option is only available to the drafting team.

Which makes this even more confusing, ST.

That means Fields is an Unrestricted Free Agent next offseason, right?

Well sure, but do you do that without letting him play for you? And do you let him play for you after you signed Wilson?

No, I don’t. But it does give Pittsburgh an inexpensive quality backup in case of injury or poor play from Wilson for a season.

I’m seeing the cost of exercising Fields 5YO at between 21.9 & 25.6m depending on who has it right. Pittsburgh will have until May 2 to do it if they choose to.

Are the Steelers getting a backup QB in the 6th round that is as good as Fields? I’m guessing no. I get why the Steelers did this. What is crazy is how little they had to give up. Rumors of Fields going for a 2nd were way off. But I still think giving up a 6th next year is a good trade for the Steelers. They also have 2 QBs that can run the same type of offense, albeit guys who have some big flaws.
