QB or not QB

There evidently wasn’t much interest in Fields for a #2 after all.

Pittsburgh acquired two quarterbacks for basically nothing and have them both on one year deals at low dollars.

Broncos and Bears ended up paying for their poor personnel moves at qb over the past two years.

Now we can move on to the draft.
 
Yep, Bears ain’t the model for getting value at the quarterback position.

Here’s to hoping they keep this up by taking McCarthy in the draft.
 
The pressure on the Bears to take the *consensus* 'best QB' in this draft (and that is and will be Caleb Williams according to most NFL draft 'experts') is going to be enormous. I cannot imagine them not going that route. So Washington's choices are going to be 'whoever they like not named Caleb Williams'. The only other possibility is that someone trades the farm to move to #1 and takes someone else. But I think it's most likely a team would do that to draft.... Caleb Williams.
 
Trying to decide if I think the trading of Howell is a tell? I know it suggests they will draft a QB at 2, but is it shouting Maye because putting two best friends on the same team would lead to horrible stress and people taking sides or does it mean nothing?
 
Blunt response coming (with apologies in advance).

It doesn't suggest they are drafting a QB at #2 - they absolutely are drafting a QB with their earliest available opportunity. I don't think it's possible they won't - we aren't starting Marcus Mariota under center.

As to which QB they will draft, no, the whole best friends thing is nonsense. NFL professionals don't worry about that kind of stuff. If they thought Howell would even be a great backup down the line, he'd still be on the roster. They obviously weren't impressed, so he's gone.
 
Bluntness is okay, but I have seen pros take sides. I have seen it impact team morale. So maybe there is a reason beyond projected performance that they made the move? You, 're probably right that it doesn't necessarily forecast a Maye over Daniels pick, but it's fun to read into these things. It's the offseason. When else do we have time for conspiracies that risk zero harm?
 
Maybe, just maybe, they already know enough about this fan base to try to avoid the vociferous calls for Howell when the rookie struggles?

I doubt there would be a loud beating of the drums for Mariotta.
 
I do so enjoy the takes from the armchair psychologists making broad conclusions with very little to no knowledge about other human beings.

Is Caleb Williams going to be the next Antonio Brown? Maybe, maybe not, I have absolutely no idea but I’ve got to guess that the teams do.

I'd prefer to believe they don't give a rat's ass about fan protestations now or in the future. Maybe that's naive, but I prefer to believe that.

I hear you brother. Truth is we will likely never know the rationales for any of the moves made. Previously, we could probably count on it being leaked to media types. But I don't see that happening with the current regime. But yeah, it is probably always a little more complicated than it seems from a fan vantage point - I am sure....
 
I would too but I have seen it talked about in relation to JustinFields and the Chicago fan base. Fields is popular and the fan base feels that the team never did enough to help him out.

Sound familiar?
 
The rumor was floated out there that Minnesota is trying to move up to #2 to take Maye using the #11 and #23 picks in Round 1 as trade bait.

That would put Washington out of the range to take McCarthy and so we could be looking at Nix or Penix later in the round.

But #11 and #23 alone aren't going to get a deal done. We should get Minnesota's #1 pick in 2025 as well as perhaps a younger roster player that can help us.
 
My sense of things is that, any consideration of trading down ended when they traded Sam Howell. I don't think Dan Quinn and Adam Peters want to roll with Marcus Mariota as the starting QB in their inaugural season. I guess if we got offered some insane package (let's say 4 first round picks or something crazy like that), it could still happen. But I think dumping Sam Howell was a strong signal they fully intend to stay at #2 and draft their guy.
 
Agreed, if anything I was really surprised at how LITTLE in terms of compensation these guys like Greeny thought Minnesota would have to give up to get to #2 from #11.

The #11 and #23 picks alone to get to #2 is not good value. No way Peters would consider that even if he was convinced he should punt the pick.
 
I think, almost by definition, for a team without a franchise QB to forego that high of a pick, the offer has to be outrageous. A true 'made us an offer we couldn't refuse' type offer. For me it would have to be such a huge offer, I would expect pundits to be saying 'What is (insert crazy franchise name here) thinking????!!!!'
