OMG! Cerrato OUT, Bruce Allen IN

I was not thrilled about Gruden when I was still thinking Vinny would be in town next year. However, I do not mind the hiring of Gruden backed by a competent GM.

Gruden exudes confidence, is a vocal leader with honest to god fire (unlike Zorn, who stays medium), and he doesn't take any crap from whining players. He's not a personnel guy, but that's what Allen is here for. A little discipline and a lot of fire could go a long way, especially for the young talent on this team.

First question. Does Rooney Rule apply to GM?

Rumor of Bruce Allen and Gruden coming in this week will fuel speculation. Even heard speculation that Gibbs may return as GM.

Honestly don't see Snyder doing the GM job. Next few days will be interesting to see how Snyder conducts GM search. My guess is he has someone targeted.

I have a bruise on my arm.

The first few pinches didn't work for you either, huh?

And just because they are talking to Bruce Allen doesn't mean Gruden will follow. After he signed that contract extension with ESPN I saw an interview with him and I gotta say he sounded pretty happy to be where he is at the moment. He loves the time he is getting with his kids that he never got when coaching and while he admitted to wanting to get back to the sidelines "some day" he talked about it like that could wait till his kids were out of high school.

Rooney Rule to apply to GM, other roles

The NFL announced on Monday that it has extended the Rooney Rule, which mandates interviews to minority candidates, to senior football operations positions.

Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, for whom the rule is named, and who is also chairman of the league's Workplace Diversity Committee, recommended the rules change.

Commissioner Roger Goodell strongly hinted at the league's spring meetings last month in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that the Rooney Rule would be extended to general manager-level positions. The change received strong backing from NFL owners at the meeting.

To this point, the Rooney Rule was a policy that included only head coaches. The rule was established in 2003.

"The recommendation ... recognizes that this process has worked well in the context of head coaches and that clubs have deservedly received considerable positive recognition for their efforts in this respect," Goodell said in a statement released by the league.

The rule mandates clubs to interview at least one minority candidate as part of the process for a team's senior football operations position, "whether described as general manager, executive vice president of football operations, or otherwise."

The only exclusions to the rule are the same exceptions that currently exist for head coaches: "If the position is held or filled by the owner or a member of his family, or occasions where the club has a pre-existing contractual commitments filed with the league office to promote a current member of its staff."

"The [extension] makes common sense," said Atlanta owner Arthur Blank, a member of the Workplace Diversity Committee.

Although not required by the rules change, Goodell "strongly urged" teams to interview a broad and diverse slate of candidates for a wide range of football operations roles, "including scouting, player personnel, and contract and cap management positions."

"The more thorough the search, the more likely clubs are to find the right candidates, and to be able to groom future leaders from within their organizations," Goodell said in the league release.

There are currently five African-American senior club football operations executives.

Be interesting to monitor how they finessed this one ... or at least get the back story on when they started talking to people. One has to assume they did NOT speak to any minority candidates currently under contract to other teams.

Wow.

Yeah, gotta wonder if they did in fact talk to a minority candidate. Snyder had to know who they wanted to hire before firing Cerrato.

And we hadn't exactly heard about him talking to anyone else.

Maybe they talked in-house to Morocco Brown?

mods, thanks for updating the thread title, i didn't know how to do it & i just wanted to get this Christmas present out there asap...

i would think danny interviewed an internal candidate just to keep it on the down-low and satisfy the rooney rule as a mere speed bump.

106.7 The Fan just confirmed that two minority candidates were interviewed in satisfaction of the Rooney Rule. No names were given.

Damn...going to be tough to work today. Kinda like when the team has a Monday nighter...

Seeing that he "resigned" leads me to believe Danny gave him a very nice "leaving bonus".

Please Santa Brucie, next on our Christmas list is a new HC and some Offensive Linemen in the draft.

I feel bad asking for more from Santa, but could you please bring an all O-Line draft?

Pretty please?

Interesting morning to say the least. Bruce Allen, eh?-well it will be interesting watching this newly developed scenario unfold. It was a pleasant surprise to wake up to, however.

Woke up early this morning and couldn't go back to sleep. I must have had a preminition that THE BEST NEWS OF MY FRICKIN LIFE! was about to drop....

Word.

I received this reply post from one of the mods of that Packer site after I informed them of this mornings events.

Congratulations on getting rid of your incompetent GM! It will be interesting to see how much control Allen gets over personnel decisions or if Snyder will treat him as a figurehead GM hired to carry out Snyder's whims.

Somehow, I don't see Allen accepting a position where he doesn't have actual say in how he does his job. Maybe Snyder is finally learning that he didn't buy a FANTASY football team.

OK, I just got home and haven't been privy to this info all day. Needless to say, it hadn't sunk as I read through this thread until I saw Bruce Allen's photo with the Redskins logo behind him on ESPN. Although it was not quite the same reaction as I had when Gibbs was rehired 6 years ago, I almost teared up a little anyway!

I think this is something we should all be celebrating! But does anybody else get the feeling the Master Marketer has struck again! I would even wager he did it before the last two home games in an effort to boost merchandise and consesssion sales for the end of the season!

Regardless, let us rejoice in this day! Ding dong the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead! (Of course I say that in jest...well, mostly)

can't wait until cerrato speaks out and gives us some insight into the inner workings of the organization's front office. imagine the inside info he could reveal regarding snyder, gibbs 2, zorn, et al. he should be able to take his radio show to another station and speak freely now!

Hmmmm....this thread has had 580 views and, counting this one, 60 posts in 8 hours.
