2024 - Way too early draft thread

In fairness, if you can’t reward your friends for their mediocre efforts that got you fired from Carolina then why take the next head coaching gig.

There was a jerk on ESPN this morning talking about Peters being in Denver when they drafted Tim Tebow and wondered if Peters had a role in that.

What a dufus.

Everyone knows that Josh McDaniels made that pick on his own despite opposition within the Broncos organization and ultimately was one of the reasons he was fired when it all came undone.

Blaming Peters for Tebow is like blaming Kyle Smith for Dwayne Haskins when we all know Dan Snyder forced Haskins down everyone's throat.

It's irrelevant anyway. Every GM blows picks. Sometimes in huge and dramatic fashion. You have to look at the big picture.

Yep, if Bobby Beathard got judged solely on his picks in Round 2 he would have been fired. This team consistently missed on those picks perhaps more than any other team.

Meanwhile no one in the league hit on late round picks that came in and made an impact more than Washington. Because of all those late round picks the NFL media never gave the Redskins any respect vs. teams like the Cowboys and Miami that came up with flashy skill selections but never won anything after 1980.

And of course those three #1 picks this team had turned into Art Monk (Hall of Fame), Mark May (12year NFL starting guard) and Darrell Green (Hall of Fame).

Ohio State edge JT Tuimoloau Is going back to OSU for another year. One less edge guy in the pool for day two.

I'll trust what the new front office does, but there's a part of me that hopes that they can work with Howell and will trade the pick for more capital to build up the line. I'd be ecstatic with Maye of course.

Some of this feeling may come from the fact that I picked up Howell in my dynasty league last year and thought he was playing out to be my QB for years to come. :)

It's the cheapest, easiest, and most accelerated path of success IF Sam can be the guy. A lot of negative data points though, so it's a hard sell at this point. It's easy to see why the assumption is QB at no. 2 overall.

Here are the two Colt McCoy scout videos of Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels. Colt seems to think NFL coaching can fix Jayden’s issues. They scare the crap out of me. Jayden is an amazing athlete and can make great throws. Can Coaching fix the rest and how long will it take.

Maye is not flawless either. He is much more pro ready imo. Colt breaks it down well.

Both videos are worth the watch.

Drake Maye vs Duke game.
Jayden Daniels vs Ole Miss.

The general consensus "out there" at the moment seems to be that Washington is very likely to take a QB at #2 come April. Personally, I think that's about a 50-50 thing. Not because we don't desperately need a franchise QB (hello, last 30 years), but because there are a whole lot of factors in play. Just off the top of my head ...

- the QB's available in 2024
- that it's the number TWO pick, not number one
- new GM, new head coach, new system, etc.
- the drift, you get

I've said this a few times already, but again ... I am almost certain we will draft a QB, but I'm not completely sold we'll be doing it at #2. I think we're equally likely to trade down and either grab one later in the 1st, or in the 2nd if there's a guy who falls we happen to have rated high enough. Why? Because the number 2 overall ain't the number 1. Historically, it just isn't.

QB’s taken with the #2 overall pick in the Super Bowl era:

2023, C.J. Stroud
2021, Zach Wilson
2017, Mitchell Trubisky
2016, Carson Wentz
2015, Marcus Mariota
2012, Robert Griffin III
1999, Donovan McNabb
1998, Ryan Leaf
1993, Rick Mirer
1973, Bert Jones
1971, Archie Manning

And because we now have to ...

QB's taken with the #1 overall pick in the Super Bowl era:

2023, Bryce Young
2021, Trevor Lawrence
2020, Joe Burrow
2019, Kyler Murray
2018, Baker Mayfield
2016, Jared Goff
2015, Jameis Winston
2012, Andrew Luck
2011, Cam Newton
2010, Sam Bradford
2009, Matthew Stafford
2007, Jamarcus Russell
2005, Alex Smith
2004, Eli Manning
2003, Carson Palmer
2002, David Carr
2001, Michael Vick
1999, Peyton Manning
1993, Drew Bledsoe
1990, Jeff George
1989, Troy Aikman
1987, Vinny Testaverde
1983, John Elway
1975, Steve Bartkowski
1971, Jim Plunkett
1970, Terry Bradshaw

The difference in "hit rate"--as subjective as that is--between the two seems pretty stark to me.

Reason I did this is I had never seen the actual list of the #2's, so I wanted to do that for myself. Once I did, I figured you guys might have a thing or two to say about it as well.

All of which is to say, for me:

1) if we do take a QB at #2, I'm going to be intrigued and excited and hopeful, to be sure, but I'm also going to be a bit ... trepidatious.

2) I'm more and more comfortable with the notion, and kinda feeling like, we're going to trade down from #2 and try to hit on a QB a bit further downstream.

3) sitting here today, I'm thinking I may not totally blow a gasket if we do what I know is unthinkable to many and trade up to grab Williams. Oh, I know, he's got warts. The price will be prohibitive. It's a titanic gamble. But I also am coming to believe, based on all I hear and read, that he's almost certainly the consensus number one QB in this draft.

93 days until the NFL Draft.

Thanks Solitary Man - great find. I look forward to watching these when I have a few minutes
The Jayden Daniela video got taken down. They must have used copyrighted video. Strange. I will again say he does not use his eyes to manipulate safeties anywhere near other pro ready qbs. Can that be fixed. I get rg flashbacks with his 1 read or run play. If it can be fixed he can be great. If not, I think nfl defenses will eventually cause injury to him.

All that being said Colt was super complementary of him. He realises how incredibly athletic his is.

The Maye video is a few days older so it probably won’t get taken down.

I know Colt will make more videos of these two.

The problem with NOT taking a quarterback in Round 1 is Peters is going to have to pull off a major coup in finding a capable starting quarterback prospect later in the draft OR make a trade for a passer who has the 'ups' the grow with this team and become more than he is now on whatever roster he currently sits on.

Part of my calculus is that the club is likely to improve in 2024 from it's 2023 finish and we are going to be getting a lower #1 pick and less picks in the top 100 unless there are a number of trades coming out of the front office this offseason of major performers like Allen and/or McLaurin.

So, folks can say that there is no John Elway prospect coming out that is 100% ready to play in the NFL and barring injuries destined to be a star.

But that is the case MOST years in the NFL draft.

Washington learned that the hard way in 2019 when Daniel Jones and Dwayne Haskins were atop one of the worst group of passing prospects in some time.

That pick was all Dan Snyder but it goes towards to the same philosophy of 'grabbing a passer' in a down year that Pittsburgh and Tomlin did with Kenny Pickett.

It was a bad draft for quarterbacks and if Pickett was in the 2024 draft coming up he likely would have been a #2 or #3 pick.

So, while there are issues with Williams, Maye, Daniels and Penix the skill level of this draft class is one of the highest in recent memory top to bottom in terms of the major names out there.

With the #2 pick if you pull another Chase Young and go after a linemen or a wide receiver like Harrison and you miss on Daniels or Maye and they turn out to be as productive as Justin Herbert was in 2020, the GM and Coach are going to be in hot water almost immediately for the decision-making.

I watched this reel of Lamar in college to see how true are Jayden’s comps to him. Lamar was asked to do a lot more designed runs and he was and is unparalleled at this. The next thing I saw was that after Lamar was moved off his spot, his eyes were still downfield. Unlike Jayden.

Also, take a look at the 5:40 spot. He clearly goes through progressions here, before delivering a dime. Unlike Jayden. There are several other throws where he does this.

I am still very unsure about Jayden Daniels and remain in the Drake Maye camp. I’m not fully dug in but I have my shovel nearby.

I am intrigued with Daniels athleticism but his frame scares the hell out of me. Anthony Richardson, who compares, is built like a fully grown man and he couldn’t make it through a season in the NFL.

I'm a big fan of Daniels rocketing up the QB ranking list. Someone is gonna want him bad, even if we don't. That #2 pick just keeps pickin' up value.

As to Maye vs Daniels, and how each might fit into an offense we still don't know what it will look like, or be run by who(m) ... I'm still gathering intel. :)

I warned you guys I’d keep saying it. Other than Drake Maye’s UNC HC there is no one more qualified than Ben Johnson to assess Maye’s (and Sam Howell’s) NFL potential.

Doesn’t mean his assessment (glowing or skeptical) will prove accurate. But guarantee you he’s got an opinion based on seeing those guys play in every game of their college careers and knowing the UNC offense.

We might be on a pretty good position to make an educated decision.

In re Howell I think Johnson is the best suited to come in and settle things down and start to rebuild Howell's confidence as he did with Jared Goff after the trade from LA.

EB really did a number on Howell, it's amazing he was able to stand upright for 17 games.

EB ties himself to Andy Reid but Reid had Mahomes sit for a season and learn behind Alex Smith before he put him behind the wheel.

No doubt a year of watching and learning closely, something that in all likelihood didn't happen here for Sam in 2022.

For 2024, Even if the team draft a quarterback he may not be ready to start the opener and Howell may very well be on the field at the start of the season or during the season due to injury, etc.

Look around the NFL and you won't see many capable backup quarterbacks, especially ones making the salary of a #5 pick.

The lack of depth at quarterback cost the Jets and Vikings a shot at the postseason in 2023.

Exactly for me too. Lamar was taking on hits in college. Talking trash after contact. Granted not SEC but he was big back then. Anthony Richardson is even bigger. All it takes is one Haloti Nata hit to end it. This skinny legs of Jayden remind me of rg.

I think Lamar Jackson is really a unicorn.

He's a guy that came into the league with unbelievable physical ability and a strong arm, but he was far from polished in reading defenses and making it through is progressions in the pocket.

I didn't watch much of him in college but I did watch Lamar in the NFL because I was intrigued to see if he would make it and ascend to be a franchise quarterback.

Folks can look at his eyes in the pocket in college in a game or number of games but his first starts in the NFL were rough in terms of him recognizing blitz pickups and being able to get the ball out accurately.

BUT, he LEARNED. And he learned at a remarkable clip during the successive 2 offseasons to the point where he MADE himself into an NFL passer.

Because of that amount of hard work and will power I don't look at 'Lamar Lookalikes' coming out of college and comparing them to him.

No more than I look at 5'10 quarterbacks coming out and think they are going to become Drew Brees.

Anthony Richardson or Jayden Daniels? The odds that either becomes Lamar Jackson are REMOTE.
