2024 - Way too early draft thread

The whole draft is going to be fascinating. But the top of the draft is going to be completely nuts.

Chicago is in such a weird position: they have a guy who might look like the guy (finally), but they also have the #1 pick.

Do they re-start the clock and pick Williams and trade Fields?

Do they trade the pick?

It's going to be a wild ride.

Here are the options at the top I see as most likely:

1. Chicago just stands pat and picks Williams or Maye. They trade Fields. (The best spot would probably be Atlanta, who should hire Vrabel.) We pick whoever's left, Williams or Maye.
2. Chicago trades WITH US so we can get our pick of Williams or Maye, because they're sticking with Fields. They draft Marvin Harrison Jr. at #2, picking up probably a 2025 first.
3. Chicago trades with the Patriots, who then pick either Williams or Maye. We pick whoever's left, and Chicago picks Marvin Harrison Jr. at #3.
4. Somebody outside the top 3 gives up 4 first round picks to get up to #1. I would laugh.

A possible 2b. could be that after trading to #2, Chicago could trade down again.

The teams who REALLY need a QB are us, New England, Atlanta and the Raiders. Minnesota depending on what happens with Kirk. One of those will get filled with Fields if Chicago takes a QB.

Chicago is going to make this really fascinating.
 
If I am the GM I am not trading a #1 pick to move up ONE spot in the draft order.

That's just not value pick for the organization.

If you look at the Ravens and other successful teams when they have high picks they usually stay where they are and draft pro bowlers and all-pros without having to give up draft capital.

Where you get desperate is when you are an organization that doesn't trust that they can find the best player if they are not choosing the most recognizable name(s) being bantered about online and on TV.
 
I believe the Bears just let most if not all their offensive staff go. You don’t likely do that if you plan on keeping Justin Fields. I think they’ll grab Caleb Williams. Still early though.

For us, the trade-up is a sucker move. You’ve got a ton of resources. Don’t squander them to move up in a draft where there is no clear future HOFer QB.
 
Thought John Keim had a great line the other day on his pod about Caleb Williams.

All the fans that hype him like "Bring him home" "Hometown kid that will generate fan interest" "He'll fill seats/we'll sell more tickets".....the guy that evaluated players like that is no longer here. Who knows how the new GM views him?

Made me smile.
 
What gives me pause when watching Jayden Daniel’s reel, is most of the highlights are him staring down the primary receiver (superior athletes at wr btw) and and just waiting for the right moment to throw to them, or if not open, taking off and running.
Now when he ran, he was the closest to Lamar that I have seen(maybe 80 percent Lamar).

Maybe he did not have to work at his progressions much? Maybe he is improving at it?


Caleb and Drake go through progressions quickly. And both are plenty athletic. Not Jayden Daniels athletic as far as running, but good enough extend, progress, and scramble when needed.
 
Yep. Besides, except in rare cases, you don't want a scrambling quarterback you want a mobile one. Even the Ravens are more successful when Lamar is a quarterback who can run versus a running back who can throw.
 
Daniels would be a good pick at #20-25 in the draft - near where Love and Jackson went as raw players coming into the league.

I don’t see Daniels as a value pick in the top 5.

I don't think many see him as a top 5 selection, but you know how all bets are off when it comes to the draft and QB. I don't understand the comparison to 'raw' players though - I think that's off. He's a 5 year starter and is (I believe from what I've read) one of the better 'processors' of what he's seeing. The *knock* on him is that he has a sericeable arm but not an elite one. He is a 'dual threat' guy, and probably one of the best in this draft, but he's not raw (at least not any more than the other top QBs in this draft). That's just based on what I've read. I'm no draft expert or talent evaluator.
 
I see him easily going in the top 5. My concern is that his body type scares me as a player that has excelled in college running the ball. He looks too skinny to me to survive that style, much like Griffin. Lamar Jackson has had struggles with injuries and he is a fully grown man.

That - and are you gonna spend a top pick on a QB who's got 'okay' arm strength? Too may college QBs fail at the NFL level because they simply can't deliver the ball with the speed and accuracy required to beat NFL defenders.
 
First I have ever heard concerns about his arm strength (not that it’s not out there). Mostly I have heard that he is a natural thrower of the football.

Either way, that will be put to bed by the draft.
 
Just because we shouldn't only talk about QBs. Who do you want with our second round picks?

You can be specific if you want. I'll be general. Either both 0-linemen or an o-linemen and a tight end. Of course, I withhold the right to go BPA if someone amazing drops.

Not implying his rep is a 'weak armed QB', just that it's not elite or close to it. Not every draft profile agrees though, as usual. Here are some snippets from profiles I've read:

Bleacher Report: "Daniels' arm talent and accuracy is a mixed bag. On one hand, he's a phenomenal deep thrower in rhythm. He regularly drops it in the bucket without needing his receivers to break stride. However, Daniels' arm strength and accuracy are less dangerous to other parts of the field. He doesn't always have the velocity to fit tight windows, and his accuracy in the 1-20 yard range comes and goes. Daniels' accuracy especially falls off when he's forced to throw out of rhythm or late in the down."

NFL Draft Buzz: "Impressive arm strength allowing him to target all three levels of the field with ease. Demonstrates quick release, especially on short and intermediate throws."

Fantasy Pros: "A lot of first-read throws. Arm strength is certainly adequate, but doesn’t quite have elite velocity. Ball placement often forces adjustments which limit yards after the catch. "

Pro Football Network: "Moderate velocity
Absolutely no contact balance
Inconsistent release sporadically leads to horrendous wobblers
Has “on” and “off” days regarding ball placement"

The Draft Network: "The element of Daniels’ game that needs development is his ability to operate from the pocket and make throws to all levels of the field. Daniels appears to operate best on plays where the reads and progressions are quick and clearly shown. When he has to stand in the pocket, go through all his progressions, and deliver an accurate football, Daniels is inconsistent in his execution and looks uncomfortable."

Prime Time Sports Network: "Jayden Daniels’ main weakness is his arm strength. He has great motion, touch, and accuracy, yet he fails to deliver the ball with zip and is especially unrefined on throws against his body and outside the numbers. This affects his deep ball accuracy as there are too many passes that he throws a little behind the runner. His anticipation makes up for a lot of his arm deficiency, but with the tighter windows in the NFL, this is assuredly something he will need to adjust."
 
Not to knock any of the plethora of draft experts out there because undoubtedly there are some good ones, but I prefer to listen to voices of those that have professionally been there and done that.

Scott Turner is looking better by the day. 😉 Especially the recent reveal that he wasn’t in favor of the Wentz acquisition.

Plus the Raider’s offense was better after McDaniels was kicked to the curb.

You keep Scott Turner and get rid of Kevin O'Connell, just another example of Ron's twisted logic and poor evaluation skills.
