2024 - Way too early draft thread

The biggest matchup of the weekend, we better be there. OSU has a handful of O-Line prospects we need to watch

Hey, dreams are important and I believe in them - otherwise, I wouldn't still be here. LOL

As my dad used to say, "hope springs eternal".

Does 5-12 or 6-11 put the team in position for #14?

I’m reminded of another saying about hope. 😉

I doubt it. 14 is where we are today.

A 5 or 6 win season would put us in the Top 10 for sure but likely higher. Last year, 5-6 wins would have had us drafting between #5 and #7.

Drafting in that range would put us in the running for Fashanu (T - Penn State) or Alt (T - ND).

Or...ya know...a solid DB.

A couple of things about this mock:

- PFF has this wrong I think - we aren't getting both #87 and #100 from SF for Chase (I'd love it if we were getting but not seen this reported anywhere), so there is an extra guy here.
- I don't think Alt falls to #11, but I also think we will be drafting higher than #11 when the season is over.
- Looks like a weak draft for Interior OLine, at least at the moment.
- The college season is far from over and there will likely be a lot of movement in player ranking.

We need to find a TE for this offense. We haven't had a legitimate pass catching threat since Vernon Davis was here when he was 35 years old.

Philly, San Francisco, Kansas City, Baltimore all have pro bowl caliber tight ends that really help out their quarterbacks, especially in the red zone.

Overall, though, I hope the team 'spreads the wealth' and builds the ENTIRE roster with picks, instead of focusing picks as we did in the past solely on the DL, ignoring other units on the team completely.

That's not a recipe for success in the cap era.

As they say - 'you can't keep everyone' :devilish:

I cringe at the term 'pass catching TE'. That's actually the only kind of TE we've pursued for a decade. Jordan Reed, Logan Thomas, and the latest Cole Turner. The problem with 'pass catching tight ends' is that they aren't true tight ends. They have the build/frame of a glorified wide receiver.

Don't get me wrong - I love a TE who can 'catch'. Logan Thomas is great wide receiver and he's mentally tough. But he doesn't have the body type to consistently stay on the field. I want a big physical tough TE, a true TE who is built to last and can do it all. Look at the top TE's in 2023. Sam LaPorta (who we could've drafted and I advocated for while we were drafting Quan Martin), George KIttle, Mark Andrews, Cole Kmet, Dallas Goedert... They are all big, tough as nails, hard-nosed TEs who can also catch the ball. They are real TE's with the build to take punishment no matter what they are asked to do.

To that end Boone, I think the TE Coach is a position of huge importance too. The college game churns out great players at many positions but it feels like TEs in college are the guys who wanted to be something else but either got too big, didn't get big enough, or weren't fast enough to play some other position so the coach went "hey, let's try him at Tight End".

I think Tight Ends are more developed than drafted in the NFL. I also think they need a certain level of attention/focus by the OC and QB.

Hockenson in MN is a great example. The guy has all the tools to be Kelce Jr but every week it feels like he is an afterthought in the game plan and the QB's 3rd or 4th read.

And all 4 of those guys have the ability to block. 3 of them are 'plus' blockers.

UPDATED - 11/27

I'm seeing a lot of chatter on social media about Washington losing out and getting the #1 pick in next year's draft. I guess it's possible but honestly, I'm not seeing it. The math just doesn't work for me.

The Bears have Carolina's pick and Carolina has 1 win. They aren't really showing any signs of turning things around before year end. Looking at their remaining schedule, they might win another game, maybe two but it's doubtful.

NE and Arizona have 2 wins each so would have to win twice more each for Washington to overtake them on the Strength of Schedule tie-breaker.

Tampa Bay and NYJ are both tied with Washington on wins but are below us in the draft order because they have played fewer games. Each has a lower Strength of Schedule though so both will move above us in two weeks when we have our bye, assuming all three teams continue to lose.

All that means that currently, on Monday, Nov 27, if all things were equal, Washington would be picking 7th in the 2024 draft.

The reality right now is that I can't see us picking better than 4th in the 2024 Draft and I think even that is a stretch because it assumes losing out when we have games against the Rams and the Jets - two games I consider to be coin-flips right now.

Best case scenario would be a top 5 pick and someone willing to trade up with us to grab a QB.

Agree. I tend to think we stick about where we are which is seven (I think). That's a great number if we're not QB hunting. Top five is better, but given how we now need blue chip help at tackle, defensive end, corner, safety, linebacker, guard, center and tight end there's bound to be a great pick in one of those categories. Really we are so talent starved you pretty much grab best player available and it will automatically be a need pick.

Obviously, I lean towards tackle with the first unless some can't miss falls to us, but I'm fine with sticking with Howell and our receiver group. Okay with keeping Robinson and Rodriguez as our primary backs (would love to add a shifty and blazing fast 3rd down back later in the draft) I even would be okay going defense with the first if there is a game changer there as long as we make sure we address the o-line in a serious way as soon as possible.
