2024 Roster Updates

Bringing in a 34-year-old Ertz on a one-year deal, particularly with his connection to Kingsbury, sounds to me like it's more experience in the TE room than wheels on the field. Sure, he'll provide some stability and veteran savvy on the field (one hopes), but I think he's being brought in mostly as a mentor for the young TE's mentioned already, and at least one or two not on the roster yet.
 
Agree. Most young TE take some time to blossom. La Porta and Kincaid last year were the exceptions. Bowers probably will be this year too. Whether the guys still on the roster can develop, or they pick a rookie in the draft, it’s going to take some time. Having Ertz gives the QB someone to rely on for those short yardage catches and will give the other TE a mentor to help with their development.
 
It's funny how we never talk about Bates, almost as if we forget he's on the roster. He's that kind of a player. I think he could also be a guy that emerges with better coaching and given more of a chance. We'll see. Of the 3, I think Armani has shown the most promise. I don't really recall Turner doing anything noteworthy in actual game play. Nothing against him, but I think he's mostly been a training camp darling.

Exactly what I said on the pod Mark.
 
McManus, 32, will replace Joey Slye in Washington.

He finished his only season in Jacksonville making 30-of-37 field goals (81.1 percent), with five of his misses for 50 yards or longer, and he made all 35 extra points.

McManus spent his first nine seasons with the Broncos.

He has made 81.4 percent of his field goals and 97.2 percent of his PATs in his career.
 
So, that proves that McManus had a better long-snapper and got asked to kick more often.

Slye's career FG % is better than McManus's.

This is the first move today I'm not thrilled with.

McManus sounds like a money kicker for 49 yards in. His accuracy at 50+ might be a relative weakness. Slye always felt hit or miss. I know some of that had to do with Cheeseman perhaps even a lot of it, but the unit has missed too many field goals over the past few seasons. I expected competition and that he would be unseated versus just hiring a replacement, but I also didn't think his contract was up.
 
In today's NFL, your kicker should be close to automatic from inside 46 or so yards and darn near perfect on extra points. Slye was way too shaky in both regards for my liking and I am fine with moving on.
 
I look forward to watching XPs and FG’s without peeking out between fingers.

I view Slye as I do Drake Maye…powerful but never sure where in the hell the ball will end up, even on gimmes.
 
Quick thoughts in general:

- McManus: Much more consistent from inside 50 than Slye and didn't miss a single PAT. Upgrade there. Iffy on 50+. Big difference: Slye was 88.9% Touchback on kickoffs. McManus last year was 75.6%. Kick coverage is going to have to be better. I like it because Slye missed too many PATs and that's a cardinal sin.

- Ekeler: I love this move. He's basically a more proven Gibson. We're going to draft a QB. Ekeler is a great option at 3rd down back. Will have limited snaps, which will help him. Good in blitz pickup, and pairing an experienced 3rd down back with a rookie QB? Good idea.

- Biadasz: My biggest gripe with this signing is his name is murder to try and type/spell. Otherwise, it makes so much sense for the same reason Ekeler makes sense: we're going to draft a rookie QB. Get him a good, smart veteran center to help with protections. Pair him with a good, smart veteran back for blitz pickups. Don't get QB killed. Good plan. (The opposite of Danny and John going north of the wall to fetch a pail of White Walker, Dragon fell down, and everybody went tumbling after. That was a bad plan. Spoilers for Game of Thrones from 6 years ago. This is a good plan.)

- Frankie Luvu: Man, Ron ignored LB for 4 years apart from drafting Davis for a position he couldn't play. Peters says "lets get an athletic LB who can play" as one of his first moves.

- Dorance Armstrong: I don't know much about him, except that he was on Dallas, Quinn knows him, and we had no DEs. So we needed DEs. Getting one who's familiar with Quinn and Witt? Seems like a good idea.

- Ertz: Cheap veteran option who might not play much. Needed a veteran for what's going to be a very young TE room.

Overall, I love the signings. They make sense. They aren't expensive. They're TELLING you we're going to draft a QB at #2 (which we knew already). Building up a support system to give the rookie a chance to succeed without getting crushed.

Going forward, I'm surprised they haven't signed some CB. Because right now they have Forbes and a hole. You might argue they have 2 holes. (I'm not sure that came out right....) I think some CB is the next signing. Also more OL and DEs because they need bodies.

Fascinated what they do at Safety. Curl didn't get his number. Does he come back? Do they want him back? The back-end of the defense is a HUGE question mark. Forrest and Martin are there, but Forbes struggled, Percy Butler has been "meh" and that's basically all they got.
