2024 Roster Updates

Official word from the team on Leno and Thomas.

Nice.

They're making all the tough (not so tough) moves early.

I kind of like that they are cutting "big names" first. Maybe that'll make get the attention of some who've gotten complacent.

as an aside, it's kinda crappy to use THAT photo of Peters when announcing the release of players...

According to Spotrac, Washington currently has 49 players under contract for 2024 with the subtraction of Leno, Thomas, and Gates.

Players included in that number are: Jake Fromm (QB), Jalen Harris (DE), Joshua Pryor (DE), Julian Good-Jones (OG), Davion Davis (WR), Abdullah Anderson (DE), Keandre Jones (LB), Bryce Tremaine (WR), Brandon Bouyer-Randle (OLB), D'Angelo Mandell (CB), Nick Whiteside (CB), Alex Akingbulu (OT) (12)

All of those I listed are under contract for between $750k and $985K.

I'm not sure why Ben has those last 3 separate. Makes no sense. They are on the team and were Week 1 starters.

It's probably his way of saying that they are starters for now, but he expects them not to be at season's start.

Maybe but I fully expect that Forrest will be a starter come September.

Perhaps but I think that is assuming a lot on his part, especially after yesterday's cuts.

If all the guys in his tweet start on Opening Day '24, that means we still have 10 new guys (counting specialists).

It also means that we start Wylie, Howell, and Bates.

One of those no one wants starting, one of those divides opinion down the middle, and one of those is a guy a lot of people like but would like to see upgraded.

RE: Ertz - don't hate it from the standpoint of I need to provide a safety blanket and 6-8 yards for a young QB who gets acclimated to the NFL. I will hate it if there is not a clear 2nd option behind him that can develop with time and become a threat at TE by November/December. Ertz alone at this stage is obviously not enough to address the position sufficiently for my liking. I assume the FO recognizes this though given they are far smarter than I ever will be when it comes to football.

There's a part of me that still holds out hope for Armani Rogers and Turner. Both have flashed nicely. Maybe with better coaches and scheming they can realize their potential. I wouldn't count on them, but I don't want to discount them either.

I think we are going to clear the decks at TE and draft a future starter and a guy that can learn the finer points of the position from Ertz in 2024.

We may keep a Bates or equivalent as the #3 as a specialist on blocking downs, but I don't anticipate more than one of the holdovers sticking around.
