2024 Roster Updates

Dan Quinn has done some great things with LBs in Dallas. I think the confidence level that the FO has in Quinn's staff's ability to turn Davis around will factor largely into the decision. That said, Davis has been an average player at best in the NFL thus far. Can he make the leap from average to great under these new coaches? It's a big leap and a big risk if you ask me.
My initial take was that no way you give him that kind of money, But I also agree that the decision made on this will indicate if Peters and Quinn think they can get big production out of him. I wouldn’t do it, but these guys may see some unrealized potential.

I, of course, have no idea what Peters & Quinn see or think but…I have never felt that Davis was ever put in a position to maximize his abilities. The LB whisperers Rivera & Del Rio tried everything under the sun to force a square peg into a round hole including initially playing him out of position, publicly criticizing him, reducing his playing time, and asking him to do things he is not skilled at.

I anticipate Davis flourishing under much more intelligent coaching this coming season. $14.5 is a lot to commit to though for that ‘potential’ performance. Due to the timing, exercising the option and then a following extension is the only thing that would make sense to me. But that will/would/could only happen if there is consensus on what he will bring to the table.

This is a tough one.

I can't find it at the moment, but I read somewhere (and I think posted it here) that no LB drafted in the first has had their 5th year option picked up in 5-6 years (I think, I've slept since I read it).

Last season 0/4 LB 5YO were exercised. The previous year 2/3 were (Devin White, Rashan Gary).

Micah Parsons 5YO is set at $24.007m. 😮

Parsons camp indicated he wanted to be the highest paid linebacker in the NFL.

So, good luck to Jones and Co. in finding enough coins in the couch under the cap to pay Parsons, Lamb and then turn around and pay Dak.

Well, they have to pay Parsons whatever he asks. You don’t let someone like that get away. Although I’ve had fun ribbing a cowboys fan about Dotson’s tweet asking him to come to DC.

I still wouldn't mind trading Parsons straight up for Jamin. I might not even ask them to give us any sweeteners. Davis would be more affordable for theim and therefore a better fit.

I believe Parsons $24.007 5th year option would make him the highest paid LB for a season.

Without any extensions or modifications to alter their current cap hit numbers- Prescott, Lamb, & Parsons would combine to take up 40% of Dallas‘ salary cap for 2024.

Jamin Davis hasn't shown enough to give confidence he is any more than an average to solid linebacker in the NFL, and that is at his best. There are times he is lost or out of position and looks less than that.

Linebacker is a lot like running back. There are a lot of them out there that can play. A lot can be found in the middle rounds of the draft.

There is really no need to pay a top 10 salary for players at these positions unless you have a rare ruby.

And Davis is not that.

The only thing I would pick on is I think he was EXTREMELY poorly coached in a horrendous scheme by bad coaches. So, maybe he could develop under the watchful eyes of better coaches. Don't know, but maybe.

However, he also has ongoing legal troubles which haven't been settled, so before they can do anything other than just keep him around and see if better coaching helps him, those need to get cleared up.

They're going to have to extend Prescott, and the contract is going to be bananas, and I'm going to giggle like a little school girl. Or point and laugh. Don't know yet.

I think the idea that Jamin Davis was poorly coached and that the new staff might be able to unearth his potential is a reason not to cut him, but not a reason to extend him.

The blood-letting has begun.

Wouldn’t it have been more financially rewarding to wait until post June 1?

A little surprised. I thought we needed to upgrade, but thought he was at least passable until we found our replacement.

It may yet be designated post-June 1 and they are just letting the player know now.

At Leno's age, with surgery pending, he has some decisions to make about his career so letting him know now is the right thing to do.

True. The surgery does change things in terms of his availability.

Standig with the pre-June 1 numbers on Leno's release. Looks like it's nearly a wash for this year which makes next year easier than a post June 1 designation would have done.
