2024 Off-season Activity / Camp thread

Wagner and Luvu are going to make this defense a lot better.

It’s getting better all the time
Better
Better
Better
It’s getting all the time

Can’t get much worse

But this is the first year I can remember where we are starting out with NFL caliber linebackers on defense.

This is such a revelation to me

Right!!?? Come a long way from Rivera and JDR -- being former LBers -- but not getting quality players at the position!

The stars appear to be aligning for a Dyami Brown trade. The Dolphins have been rumoured to be a possible trade partner. A late round pick would be all we would get for him but I still think we would do it.

Small note...

Last year the name placards on the back simply said "Commanders"

This year they appear to actually have the players names.

God bless the Dolphins if they want him.

Brown has largely been sitting on the bench drinking Gatorade for the past two years.

And you figure that’s hard to do on a team that only won 4 games last year.

That supposed Carolina synergy with Howell never developed.

In fairness to Brown, the top three have been pretty set and it would have been hard for him to break through. Also in fairness, Dyami blew many of the opportunities he did have and when Dotson stumbled during his sophomore slump he couldn't take advantage. Instead, Crowder took his snaps and proved relatively effective.

the fact Brown blew the opportunities afforded him is on him. I wouldn't say 'out of fairness' in regards to his foibles in the NFL.

hard for him to break through? How many Washington wide receivers made the pro bowl the past 2 years?

If Brown had legit NFL skills he would have gotten on the field and gotten more snaps.

Like many of Ron' s draft picks he kept guys like Brown around to avoid being criticized for blowing the selection.

Yeah, I’ve got to agree with Bulldog. Not saying it has been an ideal situation for Dyami but he really hasn’t done anything with the opportunities given him. Some guys just can’t play at this level and I don’t think he’s got the ball or hand skills to be a starting WR in this league.

I agree that Coleman could really help this offense along in 2024, but I think the sleeper is Ben Sinnott. Nothing helps a rookie quarterback like a dependable TE.

I keep seeing NFL media and talking heads comparing Sinnott to Frank Wycheck as a hybrid H-back, but he definitely has the hands and quickness to play TE and in fact there is where Peters indicated he will be mostly deployed.

I think he will be making an impact right away.

weren't you the one losing your mind about them not addressing LT?

No, I think for setting the 'core' of the team left tackle is a top priority.

What I am saying here is that while all of the immediate attention may be on Coleman, I think during the season you will see Sinnott rise above the rather tepid predictions for him by some and become a key part of that core.

We argued out the LT strategy at the draft and in free agency. There's no point in re-hashing that now. At some point we all have to look at the team as it is going to play in 2024.

Is there a good chance you see Cornelius Lucas play LT to start the season and then see Coleman somewhere down the line depending upon his progress? Yep.

It's also possible the 'patch' with Lucas has to last through 2024 and Coleman is the guy in 2025 OR we go LT in Round 1 of next year's draft.

If I were the GM would I perhaps sniff around Tristan Wirfs and offer the Bucs our top pick next year for his rights? Yep.

He wants to be the highest paid LT in the NFL and his resume largely supports his salary demands, but Tampa doesn't seem ready to give him that money even though he is only 25.

I doubt this front office would consider calling the Bucs on Wirfs at this point, even though I agree it's unlikely Tampa would bite.

I have had to accept that's not the way this front office is going to roll, at least not in Year 1.

The mantra seems to be no big contracts, period.

Pretty sure someone from our Blind Pig podcast posed this question not too long ago

Didn't we reach that point with LaVar Arrington? He couldn't play traditional down linebacker nor cover in the open field, so Marvin Lewis turned him into a rush specialist on the outside.

Maybe we can get some production out of him this year in that way.

Again, Davis' maturity level worries me. He makes bad decisions off the field and has taken 2 years to learn how to line up properly on defense.

We just don't want to count on him.

Glad the NFL changed the kickoff rules. The kickoffs had been turned into a waste of time in recent years. Who wants to look at automatic touchbacks?

Yeah, I think they tried a lot of things with Lavar. But the biggest problem Lavar had was Lavar. Sure, some of the injuries were tough, but he never bought into anything any coach wanted him to do. And he was coached by Marvin Lewis and Gregg Williams, neither of which was a slouch as a DC.

Davis, has the skills to be good, but for some reason he just hasn't been able to put it all together.

My question for him, however, is can he develop quickly with better coaching. I know what he couldn't do under the old regime. But could he do any of it if he was taught how to do it? I don't know. Maybe? Does he have the time to be developed at this point? Probably not. Can our new coaches figure out something to make him productive so they don't have to cut a first round pick? I sure hope so.

Keim on one of his last podcasts said (almost exact quote) "I can't overemphasize how much better the defensive coaching is than last year." And then he paused and said almost the same thing in another way. He was specifically talking about the secondary as it related to Forbes, but I think the same can be applied across the board.

Jack was just stuck in his ways and not able to adapt. Age doesn't bother me. Reid is old. Reid's offense has evolved 4 times in his career and it's still one of the most creative in the league. Folks want to put up Kyle, McVay, Ben Johnson and Mike McDaniels as revolutionary, young, scruffy looking brilliant offensive minds. The best offensive mind in the NFL is still, and has been for decades Any Reid. So, it doesn't necessarily matter if you're old. It matters if you are creative and adapt.

Jack didn't adapt. He also had a HS level secondary coach. The whole thing was so broken it put nobody in a position to succeed.

I'm really curious if better coaching can make players who were struggling better quickly.

And my primary 2 I'm interested in are Davis and Forbes.

I agree though, I worry about Davis' maturity level as well. That's an unknown. But if he's not mature or doesn't buy in, Quinn and Peters are going to evict his ass with prejudice and speed.
