~* Breaking *~ - Commanders trade for Deebo Samuel

I think the Bucs will get out-bid. I believe they've franchise-tagged Godwin two years in a row. No chance they do that a 3rd time. And there are teams out there like the Patriots that are dying to get Godwin on their roster. And you are right DWinzit, if they aren't done at WR in free agency, there are a couple of good ones available even if Godwin is not realistic.

49ers are on the way down and it was obvious last year, you lose those locker rooms, so who cares.

Deboo has plenty of football left in him and is an instant upgrade to Dynami and Oz in a huge way. If we can get a WR1/2, awesome.

Deebo specifically also eases the loss of Ekeler and improves our massive screen game.

I don’t think AP makes this trade if he has any concerns about Deebo’s buy-in, attitude, weight, etc. He’s in a position to know where things went sideways with Deebo and the 9ers.

Yep, great point. I don't buy for a minute the reports that Samuel only wanted to go to a couple of destinations. There is no doubt that Peters (and maybe even Kliff) spoke with Samuel before this deal became official to make sure it would be a win for everyone.

I’d be careful with the idea of adding more receivers.

They better be a personality fit. There is only one ball. And we need our running game to be improved.

Having Terry, Deebo and another expensive FA has to be well calculated and a known to the team.

If the chemistry doesn’t work its team breaking.

But I trust that Peters will have that evaluation done correctly. So we’ll see.

The need to justify or bemoan giving up a 5th is kind of silly guys. It is true that only about 5% (per the stats I found) of 5th rounders end up NFL starters, but a lot more do make contributions. Arguing 'we wouldn't have found a player of his caliber or even someone who makes the roster with a 5th round pick' is probably, but not absolutely right. The other thing is well - duh - you probably don't find Deebo Samuel in the 5th round, but you will find a 21 year old talent who costs you almost nothing for his first contract (vs. 17-20 million for a 29 year old).

The details kind of matter.

We just won't know how good this move was for awhile.

And I'll say something controversial. We might not be done in free agency at WR.
I don’t think your last point is controversial. Terry and Deebo came out in the same draft. Neither are OLD even in NFL WR terms yet - but that happens quickly.

I love this move if Deebo is the #3 slot/motion guy and we draft or sign a younger guy with speed to play outside opposite Terry as the #2. If somehow Golden was there at #29 it would make a very strong WR room.

Hopefully, we get something for Allen but Keim and others think there's a low chance so if he's cut Allen's salary becomes Deebo's for a year. Woody Marks could be had for a 5th/6th and I'd expect AP to do a couple of trades during the draft and possibly before. Marks seems like a young Deebo with great hands but not as much speed but enough w/a 4.5 40.

Re: Allen

I feel like the upcoming contracts for DL when FA opens may push a team to trade for Allen. With the cap increase, the cost of Allen for next year is gonna look like a deal.

Just hope that the team hasnt promised to trade Allen before FA starts.

Slayton. He’s used to being underutilized and never complains about it. And I suspect he’ll get plenty balls as the the third option anyway in what should be a killer offense, including a lot of deep shots. Getting a guy like that would allow us to put off drafting WRs until next year while we focus on building up the trenches this year.

I like the move but can't shake the notion with an RB physicality at 29... you know what I am thinking. Wear and tear. So while he may lack the explosiveness of his monster year he's still an improvement for our roster. Olamide Brown Crowder in the short game just lack the physicality needed to break a tackle, and effective blocking for that matter. He can line up slot outside and in the backfield and we know Kliff has the creativity to get him his touches to overcome any concerns about him struggling vs man.

I hope we bring back Noah Brown as it seems AP likes him some beef outside.

We traded Jahan for a 3rd and got Deebo for a 5th.

We’re doing this the right way. This is a great trade. Deebo immediately makes our triple option light years better.

One thing I keep thinking about is that for years the 49ers seemed to treat us as their farm team. It felt like, starting with Trent, whenever they need a boost they would call down to Double A and poach one of our players. Kind of nice that we are now the ones taking their high end talent that they can no longer keep.

I hope we don’t line him up at RB ever. Use him in the slot, give him the screen touches we threw to Brown, feature him in the short passing game on routes were you can get him the ball on the move to maximise his YAC potential.

Use him on jet sweeps if you want to get him some carries. But nothing between the tackles on a straight handoff.

Ekeler is still under contract this year.

Not a huge Deebo fan… in fact kinda always felt he was a bit over rated… but saying all this, to get him for 5th rounder when there is no way they would have drafted a guy that could be this helpful in this offense with that pick… I’m ok with the deal, not a huge fan of taking on all the $ seeing it will take a good amount toward the cap, but I can live with it…truthfully AP and Co. know the plan and obviously this was a part of it… so gotta trust it as a fan too

If you pick like Washington picks in the 5th it is a steal- Not so much as what Peters has done:
