He was cornered into finally changing the name during a period of nationwide attention by his own business partners, because he was a scumbag.
He refused to pay out Fred Smith his portion of earnings during COVID, pissed him off, and Fred leveraged the FEDEX sponsorship of the stadium to knock over the first “real” dominos of the name change. Then Nike and many other brands followed and it was all over.
So yeah, Snyder didn’t plan ahead (big surprise). But it’s because he never expected to have to change the name. He brought it on himself with scummy business practices towards his own minority share owners, fellow billionaires who were able to apply pressure through their own companies.
100% his fault and his disaster.
And while I was one who spent ten years feeling like I knew the name would eventually have to change, I do not embrace Snyder’s horrendous pandering “Commanders” branding and hope for another, final rebrand in the coming years. It feels less likely the more we overperform and the more jerseys we sell, unfortunately.
