it was expected

and it's very likely we end up with him at OC. The current situation is doesn't lead me to believe we will get a premium candidate unless they feel they can come in here and ultimately be tapped as the HC, which is a strech imho.

They know what Zampese is. And it’s not an upgrade at OC. There are likely young applicants who have a lot higher potential ceiling. This would be the ultimate give up hire. Some saying ‘they can run the same offense’. What???!!!!

Not having ‘the same offense’ is the whole point.

the ONLY thing I would say is that this offense has proven it can be effective. The biggest struggle wasn't Mon-Sat... it was Sunday. The playcalling alone (regarding the actual scheme) appears to have been the biggest thing holding the offense back. We saw guys open.. we saw explosive plays available on the field but they weren't executed effectively enough. How much did play calling actually hold back the offense? Had we continued to run max protect... had we not asked Leno to block Bosa / Garrett / Thibodeaux by himself in the 4 games that mattered at the end of the year. Had Wentz been the QB with the higher Air Yards Per Attempt average over the course of 7 games instead of Heinicke. Had we run the same plays but moved the pocket? Had we run Read Option 20 - 30 times this season instead of 4 or 5.

I agree with you, that Zampese is not 'the choice.' My comment was more that I could easily see us being the last person standing when the music stops and the only chair is Zampese... because it's unlikely that young, up and coming OCs are going to want to come here knowing that it's likely a 1 year rental. That guys like Caldwell can turn down the interview because he's more interested in being a HC. That the future is uncertain over the next 8 months...

Fans hoping for an upgrade at OC and getting Ken Zampese would be like fans looking forward to the team honoring Sean Taylor and getting porta potties and clothes hanger mannequins.

And that is exactly why I expect Zampese to get promoted to OC.

Oddly, I'm okay with it even if not in favor of it. Getting a young, hot shot up-and-comer to join up was certainly my hope but I never considered it likely. The combination of impending change and Rivera's conservative nature always made it a tough sell.

I do think the idea that Rivera and Mayhew want three yards and a cloud of dust to be a grift. I think they said that because that's what worked this year. It was never their plan and they don't want to look dumb. I think the offense that they trotted out with Wenz was what they really wanted. Pass heavy and bombs away. Otherwise, there really wasn't much need to upgrade from Heinicke.

So, the new coordinator will, I think, be given room to play and build something more exciting than a Schottenheimer offense.

I'm not sure about the pass-heavy part but definitely bombs away.

If I were a betting man, I say in Rivera's perfect world, our offense would look a lot like the '91 team where we were 5th in passing, 7th in rushing, 4th in yards per play, and 1st in net yards per play.

He needs to see if Gibbs would like to interview to be OC.

I fully expect that Pat Shurmur will be the new OC and that the decision is already made. It falls comfortably in line with Rivera’s SOP. I believe that the Zampese interview was a courtesy one and now all that remains is interviewing a minority candidate.

This is an interesting name to watch if you paid attention to how Mariota was used in Atlanta last season

Leftwich fired. Do they give him a look?

Especially since I think Howell is a better QB than Mariotta.

yeah, i tend to agree

Doesn't make me feel great that Atlanta finished 31st in passing in 2022 but limited, and it was clearly a 'bridge year' plus they were 1000000% focused on running the ball.

I think he got more out of Mariota than was expected. I don't know that he's 'the answer' for the long term, but it could be interesting to see if that 'dual threat' type offense is a direction they go. God knows we've all wanted to see it sprinkled in just a bit more

Bevell is an older retread. Not much imagination here. Once again, going for a NAME.

One thing I have to give him is he tends to land in the right spots.

First he's on board in Green Bay and gets promoted to QB coach when Brett Favre is there. Then follows him to Minnesota.

Then he ends up in Seattle with a young Russell Wilson.

Shanahan and McVay took teams to a Super Bowl with solid but not great passers like Garoppolo and Goff. That is the type of experience to want to have on board.

We all saw how exposed Adam Gase was once he was separated from Peyton Manning and had to work with lesser talents.

I think in hindsight we may regret firing Turner - not because he deserved to stay, but because with all of the competition for OC spots and our general unattractive situation (coming to DC is a tough sell) we may well end up with an OC who gets less out of this offense than Turner did.

It is what it is.

Our 2023 mantra is going to be ‘It is what it is’.

I have a feeling Rivera will go hard after Roman. His run game (not just with QBs) is elite…
