The Trent Williams question

That would be a solid OL, if Flowers is willing to sign for cheap. He's still an unknown, even though he showed some promise...afdraid he might try to leverage that into more than he's worth. I'd just assume Wes Adams get on the field.

However, we have the money and limited early picks this year, we should definitely use a good portion of that 65 million in cap space to signScherff (if he'll stay), TW (for a modest extension), and Conklin who is only 26 and would be a good candidate to sign to a 4-5 year deal.
 
Undoubtedly, Trent Williams has been an excellent LT for the Redskins over the course of his career. That being said, I would also argue that he's never truly been part of a dominant offensive line in Washington. There have been years with Williams where our line has been highly touted, but in clutch spots in games, it has also repeatedly folded and proven that it was nothing more than overrated. One might argue that Williams was not the problem, and that is a fair assessment. That said, he was still associated with a grossly overrated line in Washington.

I think what I am trying to say is we were never able to be truly dominant with him. I don't see how it would be a major catastrophe after coming off a 3 win season to go into a new year without him, especially considering the reported ridiculous contract demands, age of the player, and drama from a year ago. Bye Trent.
 
if the rumors of Trent wanting between 20-25 mil (he said "think between Collins and Thompson's numbers") I'm out. He can hit the road.

Work an extension the Lions can live with, and ship him off!
 
Trent can ask for $20 mil all he wants. I don't see anyone giving him this kind of money. Rivera is a no-nonsense type of guy. If Trent tries to push the envelope too much he is gone. Trent needs to be careful what he asks for.
 
Again, he signed a deal that was heavily front-loaded and was the largest in NFL history for an OT at the time.

He is no longer that player physically. He is still a good player, probably a top 10 player still at his position, but he is one year out from playing and is 32 years old.

If the Redskins were closer to being a contender otherwise, this might be an easier decision. But with a team that finished at 3-13, you usually don't start the process of regenerating the franchise by giving thirty-something players out-sized deals.

Not saying I disagree, but what do you do with him?

At this point any leverage for a trade is gone...BB has us trading him for a 3rd and I tend to agree that might be the proper compensation for him at this point. Who knows?

But what's the next move if you don't extend him? And I ask that saying you never give him top LT money. Tunsil is not a market setter for Trent.
 
If you can't get a first anymore, which seems unlikely, I think you keep him and have him play out this contract. He can't afford to sit out again and needs to pay well for another contract. Comp pick would be a third rounder anyway and I think a year of play plus a third would be more valuable to us.

His heels are dug in, he's not playing without an extension or trade. He won't risk real injury before he has a chance to cash out one last time.

Definitely possible, but can he afford to not only pass up his pay for the year but also absorb all of the fines? From what I read I don't think so. I would like to extend him personally, but it would have to be a reasonable amount. I just don't see the value in trading him for less than a first.

I, too, am all in for extending him to a modest new contract with 2 years guaranteed, front ended while we can afford it, so after 2 years if he doesn't work out...he's gone. And I think 35 million guaranteed would get it done.
 
I'm sure that would get it done. But we'd be insane to pay him that kind of money at this point in his career when he hasn't played a down in more than a year and supposedly couldn't tolerate wearing a helmet 4 months ago. Let some other team overpay the drama queen. We aren't going to get a 1st for him and we don't need a 1st. A 2nd round pick for the player he is right now is more than fair. And it would allow us to draft his replacement in a OL rich draft.

Unless it's a team that has a late 2nd round pick, I doubt we could get a 2nd round pick for him since there is a glut of LT's in the upcoming draft. At this point it's a numbers game, I think there is a projected 6 or 7 LT's who could go in the 1st 2 rounds. Who are we going to trade him to who couldn't just draft one and not have to pay them rookie contract money?

So what happens in this free agency period? The Texans are likely to extend Tunsil...every indication is he gets the 20-21 million he appears to be going to demand, kid is worth it. So that 35 guaranteed for Trent over 2 years seems more reasonable. IAnd then next year? Think about it, next year there is going to be a handful of LT Free agents that will probably demand and get close to 20, we'd have Trent for at least one more year at 17.5.

We have him on the books for 13.2 million this year. So if we extend him for a year 3 deal, guaranteeing 35 million...it's really not going to be that much in the future market including the 13 he is already on the books for. We have that 22 million over 2 more years for a top 10 LT in the league.

This was one of the problems the Redskins kept getting into with Kirk Cousins, they didn't want to pay him 19 million a year, but in the scheme of things...that would have been a steal after what we paid him, and could have had him locked up until 2022.
 
why not make it incentive laced?

$13-15 mil per guaranteed
Play 13 or more games - 1 mil guaranteed
X amount of penalties of less - 1 mil guaranteed
team makes postseason - 1 mil guaranteed
make all pro - 1 mil guaranteed

etc, etc. If he can hit those we all win anyways.
 
I'm a simple man, with a simple thought process. Availability is everything, and I think that really hurts trade value. He wants even more money from every indication I've seen, and isn't on the field enough to warrent that from any team in my opinion. If he won't play out his contract as it stands, send him packing for whatever we can get. I'd take an RC cola, and a Moon Pie...
