2014 Winter Olympics Thread

I cannot say the Redskins' 1st Super Bowl victory was as big as this was to me. This is one of those moments in my childhood that I will never, ever forget. This video is about 10 minutes, but worth every second. For those too young to remember, this is probably the greatest olympic moment in the history of our nation...not just for the victory, but for everything it represented. My world changed for the better after this victory. And while I know a hockey game was not the 'reason' for it...it helped develop a sense of national pride an 11 year old boy can only begin to understand at that age.

Watching the Olympics for the first time to see the end of OT for the US/Russia. On to the shootout. I hate it! There should be no shootout in the first round. There is nothing wrong with a tie unless it is in the elimination round.

And the fact that the same shorter continues to shoot time after time is rather ridiculous. Horrible format. Every player on team should have a shot until the game is decided not the same player over and over.

Just saying, t requested spoiler tags for early events. I watched on a delay for sure.

Agreed on the shootout format. It worked out well for us, though! Oshie is one of the best in the NHL at it (Datsyuk is probably the best). That combined with a little luck to get the Russian's third goal waved off, was enough to win. Two very good teams going down to the wire.

I'm actually surprised that there are no ties in the group stage... Is that different from Vancouver?

Finland and Canada engaged in quite the battle. Canada doesn't look nearly as good as they did last year. The US had an easier group, but looked a lot more dominant.

After Canada defeated Finland in OT, Canada is the 3-seed and Finland is the 4-seed. This means there will be no repeat of the all-North American final (USA vs. Canada) from Vancouver. While slightly disappointing, I will settle for sending Crosby home in the Semifinal round instead. :)

our female snowboard and speed skate people sucked.

There's a theory that the under armor uniforms slowed the speed skaters down. They hadn't raced in them until Sochi, and speed skating is traditionally one of our strongest events.

Bode Miller became the oldest Alpine skier to medal at 36, winning the bronze. History is made!

yeah... i saw all that in the lead up on nbc.

the problem is they got blown out and weren't even close. they looked exhausted and it showed when they were so far behind.

maybe the suits had an impact on earlier events but it doesn't explain finishing a full second out of medal contention...

Doesn't it though? I'd argue the other way around... If the suits weren't the issue, they'd have done better. There's no logical reason they got blown out like they did.

In a sport where seconds count, if the suit is wing, it could cost them everything.

Next Olympics, they need to do the following:

Train at sea level.
Rely on coaches and not scientists.
No more entitlement attitudes.
Get much younger.

Yeah maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way. I feel like if they were consistently coming up fractions of a second short, then that would make sense.

But the one I saw last night... both my wife and I thought they looked exhausted and like something was wrong with them... not suit related.

They looked like they weren't prepared... but what do I know about olympic speed skating ;)

Could be... Just seems strange that they'd be unprepared in a sort where they're traditionally strong. I mean, Shani Davis got 8th!

Davis was the one where we both looked at each other, 1/2 through, and said there's something wrong with him... he's not even contending... he looked exhausted like he was just going through the motions.

I don't know. All I know is that our guys have dropped the ball quite a bit from what I've seen. I guess in terms of medal count we're not doing too bad. We have a high total medal count, we're just not dominating the golds.

The snow cross was bad.. our #1 got cocky. She took too much speed going into the end and carelessly missed the landing and wiped out. Our only woman in the finals was only there because everyone in her qualifying round wiped out - she got in simply for finishing the course - and it showed in the finals, she wasn't even close.

Shaun White screwed up his final run after tearing the half pipe apart during his qualifying runs. Not sure what happened there, everyone was complaining about the conditions, but he did so well on his qualifying...

I also found the jabs at White by other snowboarders to be... lame. They criticized him for making it all about him and not using his platform to build up the sport... as if that's not what happens to all of our olympic stars...

and I'm sorry but ice dancing is the worst event ever. that and whatever that ribbon dancing crap is in the summer olympics.

(apologies to fellow BGOers that are ribbon dances and ice dances... cool stuff, just not an 'olympic sport' in my opinion...)

I love that you put that politically correct part in, because EL would have been pissed since he ribbon dances with Mike!

Wrong thread! And I just made fun of Travis for this last week lol
