I think there is a difference between refusing to pretend the old name and logo ever existed (which seems to be the NFL's policy) and actually, actively, renaming the team. I'm honestly not seeing a huge issue here. What I see is that Harris and Co are happy to acknowledge the team used to be called The Redskins and had a logo and everything. I think that is the right thing to do. That doesn't mean they are ever going to use it again going forward.

Maybe. Or, maybe they really are trying to test and see how much complaining will happen in hopes none and get to go back.

I think if all things were equal, Harris would change the name or even change it back. He's let enough slip out that it's pretty clear he's not a fan of our new name. But all things are not equal. There's still the social pressure and the desire to keep the NFL brotherhood happy. I also think it's unlikely we make any change for the time being because the new ownership has spent so much money buying the team, investing in the roster rebuild, patching the holes at the stadium and in the practice facility that they just don't have the bandwidth to take this on, too.

Do I imagine it's possible they'd like to unveil a new name with a new stadium? I do. I think that's a strong possibility unless the team starts winning enough that we all start embracing the name or enough years have gone by that we just don't care. After all, when we changed from Bullets to Wizards pretty much everyone panned the name, but a few decades later no one even talks about name change as an issue or possibility.

Well, actually 'Wizards' still hits me as an awful name, perhaps the worst of the lot. Pollin's dog and pony show was even worse because the team tried to maintain that of the available names 'Wizards' was most popular with fans and the team wanted to listen to them.

I don't think they are all over the place. DC government wont go for anything with the old name and unsure how they are about the logo. But until they get a solid agreement I don't see them changing anything, I expect the new name to be announced in 1-2 years and to be put in place when the new stadium opens in 2030-31. Changing the names at the former FE EX would not be financially smart to do. One other thing I think we will see if the Harris group getting the stadium built with a lot of private equity fund money. And a split of stadium revenue if the govt can't or wont pay for it

Using it in throw backs would make them a fortune, and yes I am of the opinion that the name will become Warriors and the old logo will be used at least 2 games a year.

Let me start by saying I have absolutely NO problem with the team being named 'The Warriors' and I would have been fine if that's the name the team picked when they changed it. That said, I think that going forward teams are going to avoid any and all association with Native American culture/iconography. It's easier to avoid it all together than to try and dance between the raindrops. I've never thought of 'Warriors' as a Native American term, but some people do (I think that's nuts but whatever) and coupled with a Native American logo might be enough to keep that mascot on the shelf. I know we want this to happen but in this day and age I don't think it's going to. Some people may think Harris is unclear on this but the NFL is not, and I don't think a new owner is going to want to die on that hill.

If the people who's grandfather is the actual logo like it and are upset it's gone; why should anyone else have a say in it?

This is like the Aunt Jemima thing all over. People being offended for someone else over stuff that has nothing to do with them.

Nobody has ever been offended by this enough to matter until covid and these social justice warriors decided to make so much of a stink people just agreed out of fear of losing their jobs and livelihood.

We may not go back to Redskins, but the logo should not be any sort of issue ever. It's a real life man who sat for the picture and felt honored to be used.

Yeah i'm with Mike on this one.

Say what you want to argue about the name, and the claims of offense by it, but the Logo was never considered slanderous.

I also think the 'move away' from Native American relation was a knee jerk reaction to try and stand on a table and say "see, we're doing the right thing." Essentially an over-correction.

Chiefs, Braves, Blackhawks... all Native American references that have not changed.

It would have been really interesting (and I don't think Snyder would have gotten away with it) if he had changed the name to Commanders but kept the Indian Head logo. I wonder what would have been said?

You're arguing with the wrong person. I'm talking about whether or not it's a good thing. That is NOT and argument I want to have here.

I'm just saying how it IS. Aunt Jemima is a perfect example, actually. It's not on the shelves anymore. It's not coming back.

I wasn't arguing, either. This was just my side to it all.

Aunt Jemima is a perfect example. A woman's legacy of hard work and overcoming obstacles is ruined due to people who don't give a damn about her....just how they feel.

Would Weekend Warriors be acceptable?

Warriors have long been celebrated in literature, history, and popular culture for their bravery, skill, and unwavering determination. These fierce individuals have inspired countless stories and legends, making the word “warrior” a powerful and evocative term.

When discussing warriors, it’s important to remember that this term typically refers to individuals who are highly trained and skilled in combat or warfare.

I would totally root for The Weekend Warriors

Chicago Blackhawk

Mascot: Tommy Hawk

Pretty clever, and apparently not offensive

Based on a conversation I saw online yesterday, the millennials and gen z crowd will be offended by the name weekend warriors. Weekends are for vibing and chilling, not doing things and certainly not being a warrior. Doing things are what boomers do on weekends. I’m in Gen X, so I don’t know what I’m supposed to do on the weekend. But apparently telling a millennial or gen z’er to do something on a weekend is too much mental stress on them and a boomer thing to do. So forget about expecting them to support a weekend warrior.

Name issue and jokes aside, we are so lost as a society.

100% with Henry on this one. They may occasionally honor the old name/symbols in some way (I don't see the team going along with scrubbing that from history like the NFL seems intent on doing). But I don't see them doing anything Native American-related going forward. Whether we agree with it or not, there is the whole idea of 'cultural appropriation' that is anathema in today's socially conscious society, so using any 'people' as a 'mascot' or using their symbols in any way probably isn't going to happen.

I also agree with Henry that to a great extent, equating 'Warriors' with Native American culture is silly - as it has many meanings but in modern culture people associate it most with the military. This is so obvious it shouldn't need to be said. But I think for that reason, they would not use 'Warriors' as a way to return to the Native American logo or symbols. There have even been some who've tried to argue that 'Wolves' has Native connotations which is even more ridiculous.

First page results for the search term ‘warriors’.

It's a fair point... and again, while I don't agree with it, you're not wrong regarding the current climate, as infuriating as it may be... depending on where you stand with it of course.

It admittedly is an act of futility, but the point still remains... the imagry was never slanderous. It's frustrating as hell but ultimatley I think you're right.
