It doesn’t surprise me we’re near the bottom of the league in merch sales.
Snyder did a great job in alienating and eroding the fanbase, and I can’t imagine the team has been attractive to young new fans for a long time. Lack of success on the field and controversy off it. If you’re a young kid, and you aren’t supporting them for legacy purposes, then why would you choose to support them?

It all means less people buying merch.

And then, you go through a renaming disaster, where for a couple of years you have no identity, and then end up with one so generic the old fans hate it, and there’s nothing to inspire new fans.

If they’d gone Redwolves, with a cool logo and mascot, they’d have something to market. The Wolf concept could have been something to really start drawing in young fans, while kind of keeping old fans happy(ish).

Instead we get Commanders, which is a real non entity, and a cheap looking ‘W’ logo, and a mascot who’s a pig in an army uniform.

I know as a kid I’d have been really confused. I wouldn’t know the ‘hogs’ history. I wouldn’t make the connection. And I’d be super confused that our logo has nothing to do with our name and nothing to do with our mascot.

Feels like branding 101 to me.

There’s so much money left on the table. Surely they have to rebrand at some point?

If it were me…

Go back to our classic uniforms. For me, preferably, the Super Bowl era uniforms. Those are the ones that stick in my mind as the classics.

Change the name to something that can be branded on. I always liked Redwolves as it wasn’t too far from Redskins and leant itself to some fun marketing and merchandising.
I quite liked Redtails too, but I always felt that having a name you need to kind of explain to the layman wasn’t the best idea.

And for a logo, whatever name you pick, lean into an aesthetic that follows the old Redskins logo design aesthetic.

Currently putting a Commanders jersey alongside a Redskins jersey, there’s no real common thread. No continuity. No link. They even messed with the colours. Get the nostalgic link back for us old fans while making it fun and drag to entice in the young generation.

My two cents!

I think the NFL has clearly embraced the idea that Native American culture/imagery/symbology should not be used going forward. I actually think the Chiefs will be next to be forced to change. It’s inevitable. I agree with Chris - it’s not about ‘want’ it’s about the issue not going away and the practical reality (imho) that the NFL is not going to allow a return to ‘Redskins’. The team has already take n that possibility off the table publicly so it’s not happening.

Pretty much sums it up.

Bet ya six the Chiefs never change name or logo. The timing and over the top pressure isn't there... If not for a murder of a man by police getting the ball rolling, we'd still be the Redskins IMO.

You can get away with 'Warriors' or other generic military/history type term but the more specific references such as 'Redskins' or 'Indians', etc. are being taken out across the board.

St. John's went away from 'Redmen' to 'Red Storm' and was probably the first of these transitions to take place.

The leader of the Potomac (technically Patowomac, I think) tribe said it would be fine if we used their name. I remember there was a HS that did that and I think he just asked them to change some detail in the logo to make it historically accurate (something like his tribe never used the headdress or similar).
Not the catchiest name, but if it means getting back the classic helmets and purging the commies, I am on board.

I never wanted to change the name. I'd love to have the name back.

I do not believe it will. I have accepted that.

I honestly believe that if not for the former owner, we would still be the Redskins. I absolutely believe the owners sacrificed our name as part of the effort to get the former owner to sell without them being forced to vote on it because they are rich, old cowards.

At some point I hope we as a society just tell those making a bunch of fuss for no legitimate reason to STFU and continue doing what they want.

I know it's not PC, but I'm tired of the threat of "being cancelled" or them trying to find out who you are and where you work simply because they didn't agree with you. This culture has gotten too self centered and arrogant.

Rent over....sorry.

I do like football team though. I wish we had kept it.

I also believe that mascot is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. It's embarrassing.

In the past the use of a microphone was earned. Now everyone has one available at all times.

Some call that progress. I am not one of them.

Never really got into Washington Football Team although a part of me thought it would be funny if the name became the Washington Teamsters.

I think if they had just gone with Washington Football Club we could avoided a lot of where we are. Folks could’ve accepted it. Washington Football Team was an NFL-wide joke, literally we were mocked for it. It never had the potential to be a long term name. I will never understand their thought process there - just patently stupid and embarrassing. It must’ve been a Snyder idea because otherwise someone would’ve vetoed that dumb idea.

Maybe Snyder figured after enduring a name as nondescript as Washington Football Team people would be overwhelmed and delighted by Commanders. It was a nefarious and sinister scheme.

I was a fan of it. It felt like a middle finger to the woke crowd and NFL for forcing the change. A lot of my friends in Cleveland felt the same and wanted that to happen when the Indians changed their name, too.

Just like Snyder though. I get that sentiment but you can’t rename a beloved franchise out of spite. If it was a middle finger that’s just another pathetic Snyder move and the only ones hurt (as usual) were the fans.

Santana, Logan, and Fred were talking about the #5 situation today and Santana said “ain’t a lot of people buying Commanders gear too. So you gotta think about that. No offense”. 🤣

I'm thoroughly convinced Snyder knew the writing was on the wall long before we did, and the name Commanders was the pick from about 5 min after Redskins was removed. The whole dog and pony show was just a gimmick and his final F-U to the league was leaving it with the name he did. It was all spite, and it wouldn't shock me if he actually tried to use it as leverage, telling people like Goodell that he would brand it an unpopular brand if he didnt get support.

It was publicly reported that he had some supposed dirt to take down other owners with him, meanwhile it's been absolute crickets since he left town. I guess there's a chance he's writing a tell all book, but i highly doubt he would be that calculated... he would have done it loud and sloppy.

I personally will never use a name other than Redskins.
However I don't think a new name will be introduced until the new stadium is opened.
I hope it is something that will allow the team to use its historic logo - although I think the NFL doesn't want that, the NFL is afraid to offend folks.
But if they really don't want the REDSKINS to be used they must force all teams to change names that have any relationship to an ethnic group ect.

I hate the C name for a plethora of reasons. Redskins will always be a part of my soul but it ain’t coming back.

If the franchise goes with something like Redwolves I will be all in and move on. It works with the song, with HTTR, among other things. And please get rid of the Walmart uniforms.
