What's for Dinner?

That sounds very, very good Lank...how'd they turn out?

Very tasty, a little on the sweet side though. I like sweet, but if you're not that into sweet stuff, you may want to dial back the honey, our leave out the ginger.

My folks ventured over this evening and we went to Texas Roadhouse. Had the eight ounce sirloin, seasoned rice, and sweet potato. Good stuff.

Texas Roadhouse is killer. I don't go there but once a year, but it's amazing when I do go. I always get the 10 oz ribeye with either the mashed potatoes or baked sweet potato and whatever side I'm feeling that night. usually their green beans since they throw chunks of bacon in it. Damn I love that place  The rolls they give you are hard not to destroy all night too.

Places like Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn Steakhouse will make you realize how pathetic places like Texas Steakhouse, Outback, and Lonestar are in comparison. Places I loved as a kid.

I still wish I had a Po Folks near me though, I miss those places. Although they probably aren't what I remember as a kid anymore.

Homemade tortellini and sauce with some French bread (don't judge me, it's better than Italian)

Served on a paper plate, because I'm classy.

My brain took a vacation and didn't tell me. I just made a huge rookie mistake that I have never made before. I was stoking the wood chunks in the smoker. One fell out. Without thinking, I immediately reached down to pick it up and throw it back in. The top part of my thumb looks like Freddy Kreuger's face, and the pain is pretty damn intense.

On the plus side, the slaw is awesome, and as Boone said I will never buy it again. After dinner, probably the doctor unfortunately. But dammit, I will be eating this **** first

Dinner was awesome. I got some green tea burn crap at the store to put on my thumb, and not going to the doctor. It works surprisingly good.

I've done that before. Makes you feel like an idiot once your brain wakes up and starts screaming at you.

Ma La Shrimp for me tonight. Never had it before, hope it's good.

^^^^^^ Looks like Ragu to me.

Speaking of Ragu, have you guys noticed one of the main ingredients of the store bought pasta sauces. Corn syrup...they put that **** in every thing! The more I investigate it, the more I fear that ****...

I can't stand the taste of any store bought sauces. I've made my own for over 20 years. Now if I eat at someone's house and they make something with the store bought stuff, it's so sickeningly sweet I can't even eat it. Fresh made is so much better, and it's a lot easier than people think, it's just really time consuming. Which is why I make 6 quarts at a time and freeze it :D

Edit: After looking the nutrition facts up for store bought sauces, I couldn't believe it. An average jar of store bought sauce has a half cup of sugar in it, plus corn syrup. That's terrible. I make a 6 quart pot, and only put 2 tablespoons in. Based on the ratio of the store crap, a batch the size I make would have almost 4 cups of sugar in it. That's insane. And disgusting.

You 'fear' corn syrup? I think you've lost the right to make fruit beer jokes Brianna :)

Haha! read up on it some John... That **** is the devil! They are likening the addicting nature of corn syrup to that of narcotics. And as I delve further into the foods that I eat and read what goes into it, I am astounded how much food contains high fructose corn syrup.

Oh and I am not scared of Fruit beer...I just wouldn't drink it like my girl Goal does.

Brian's right to be scared of corn syrup, as un-manly as that sounds.

The Pediatrician we take our kids too has been nationally recognized for more awards and accomplishment than I thought humanly possible, he sits on every board he could possibly sit on, he is huge in the field of research, on the front lines of new knowledge, etc. This guy is the Pediatrician. With all he does, I swear he must have 37 hours in each one of his days.

Just a little back story on the guy, he really is about the top guy there can be, and he showed us a horrifying study on HFCS that would make all parents quit giving it to their kids if they read it.

In the report, which has only publicly leaked out in bits and pieces because the FDA and AMA haven't decided where to go with it yet, and the corn growers lobby is apparently pretty damn strong for some damn reason.

This doctor was one of the doctors involved for years in the research, both physically and neurologically that HFCS has on the body. They confirmed through multiple tests and studies that HFCS is not only addictive, but it's more addictive than opiates. The ****ed up part? The FDA knew this years ago, and allowed it to be added to sweeten foods. The problem is, it helped create the diabetes epidemic you hear so much about now. It is the root cause of some of the biggest health problems currently facing the country.

The study also shows that long term consumption above a certain amount can damage heart and brain tissue, it disrupts neurological function, and it causes fatigue. The massive increase in disorders that they have linked to HFCS consumption on the scale the U.S. has? Certain cancers, kidney disease, heart arrhythmia, fibromyalgia, depression, diabetes, and obesity. It hooks you and keeps you coming back, just like a drug. It's one of the main reasons it is so hard to eat healthy, it is created to make you crave the foods you love.

The current study they are in the early stages of, is to determine if their is a direct correlation between the institution of HFCS as a staple in shelved foods, and the explosion of autism. I know it seems hard to believe all this could come from corn, but the science backs it up and leaves absolutely zero doubt. It's horrible ****.

Lets get back to dinner :) you guys are a buzzkill.

You guys are scared of corn syrup? I eat corn syrup for dinner!

Made my long-time jambalaya recipe last night. Way good.

Today, working on a crockpot version of Eastern NC Barbecue (or as some people call it, pulled pork). Of course, a 'purist' here in my neck of the woods would cringe at the mere idea of trying to create this delicacy in a crock pot. But I've never been one to embrace a 'purist' POV. Here's the recipe if anyone's interested:

Ingredients
2 onions, quartered
2 T brown sugar
1 T smoked paprika
2 t salt
½ t ground black pepper
1 (4-6 lb) pork butt or shoulder roast
1 T liquid smoke
1 c cider vinegar
⅓ c Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ t crushed red pepper flakes
2 t sugar
½ t dry mustard
½ t granulated garlic
¼ t cayenne pepper

Instructions
Place onions in crock pot.
Blend brown sugar, paprika, salt and pepper; rub over roast.
Place roast in crock pot. Drizzle liquid smoke over roast.
Combine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, red pepper flakes, sugar, mustard, garlic and cayenne pepper and stir to mix well.
Drizzle about ⅓ of mixture over roast. Cover and refrigerate remaining mixture.
Cook roast on low for 8-10 hours.
Remove meat and onions, discard onions and shred meat. Add juices from crock pot and remaining vinegar mixture (a portion may be reserved to pass).
Serve plain or as sandwiches.

Hey John, when you have a sec, can you post the jambalaya recipe? Em makes a killer jambalaya, and we are always interested in how others do it.

And your pulled pork sounds terrific. We need to all meet up and bring chili, pulled pork, etc. Fat, dumb and happy, baby.

I'm smoking a chicken right now, steaming some broccoli, and trying something new since I've turned into a whore for my smoker. I decided I want baked potatoes with dinner. Rather than do them in the oven, I decided to coat them in some of this stuff......

and throw them in the smoker. I'll let you know how it turns out. To my knowledge, this isn't something people do, but I'm hoping it'll turn out as good as my grilled romaine and avocados did.
