What's for Dinner?

I don't want to make you feel old or anything, but this sounds a lot like my grandmother's new place :)

She rarely cooks anymore because the food in their "cafeteria" is so good. She does bake from time to time, though, and makes breakfast for dinner once in a while.

I'll continue to make most of my own meals, but will use the dining hall (eat there or here - either way) on occasion.

And getting old is a part of life.

That shrimp looks really good :) Marinating some chicken breasts and steak in teriyaki marinade, garlic, other seasonings and grilling later. Simple ice storm food.

As Mike said hold the zucchini and coconut milk and that sounds fantastic. I love spicy curry but the ONLY one in the house who likes spicy food...sigh/sad face.

I bought a big 6 quart off-brand porcelain crockpot cooker a couple weeks ago (man cannot live by the grill alone :)). Doing a sausage/cabbage/potato dish. Basically, recipe goes like this:

Start with layer of red potatoes, top with a stick of melted butter/margarine, salt, pepper, fresh thyme. Cover potatoes with layer of sliced yellow onion. Chop 1/2 head of cabbage and add. A bit more salt, pepper, thyme. Final layer add whole italian sausages of your choice. Finally, add 1/2 cup apple juice, and a couple teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. Cook on high setting for 3-4 hours or low at 7-8 hours.

hold the zucchini (for me anyways) and that looks amazing!

my girl has been sneaking squash in our dinners..all in this "get mike to eat vegetables" kick..lol so far pumpkin squash is winning.
Have you tried spaghetti squash? It's crazy good. Grilled avocados are winners too.

That's why they invented smokers :D

That sounds awesome. Tonight I'm doing pulled pork sandwiches with a butt that I've been smoking - hand rolled. Tough on the lungs, but worth it

I even made my own coleslaw, dressing and all, to top it with. Never made my own slaw, hoping it turns out good. I just got tired of going on a mission to find edible slaw, it pretty much sucks at 99% of the places you can get it from. It's always the same problem too......too much vinegar, or too much sugar.

Once you make your own slaw, bet you'll never buy it again. It's so damn simple, and so much better fresh.

My brain took a vacation and didn't tell me. I just made a huge rookie mistake that I have never made before. I was stoking the wood chunks in the smoker. One fell out. Without thinking, I immediately reached down to pick it up and throw it back in. The top part of my thumb looks like Freddy Kreuger's face, and the pain is pretty damn intense.

On the plus side, the slaw is awesome, and as Boone said I will never buy it again. After dinner, probably the doctor unfortunately. But dammit, I will be eating this **** first

Dinner was awesome. I got some green tea burn crap at the store to put on my thumb, and not going to the doctor. It works surprisingly good.

Keep it moist (that's what she said). They sell burn pads, second skin is a good brand, that have water in them. But you definitely want to keep it moist. But if its really bad, you should definitely go to the doctor.

I keep it so moist the ladies in the room have to sit on towels

Seriously though, the snow at my disposal was a blessing, it was great for pain relief. I had a bad experience with a gauze-like burn pad one time that my blister formed around, and I had to.....well, create your own visual, but it was gruesome. Is it gauze, or do they have different types?

It's pretty bad, but the pain has gone down a lot and I'm no stranger to burns, so I'll be keeping an eye on it. The skin on top of my thumb where the brunt of it was has actually hardened though. I can honestly say I have no idea what that means. As many burns/degrees of each I've had, I can't say I've ever had that happen. And other than the usual redness , and a very small whitish blue spot about the size of a grain of salt in the middle of it, there's no discoloration or oozing.

That sounds like a third degree burn (the 'whitish' spot is probably charred skin). Without looking at it, hard to say if a Dr.'s visit is essential, but I'd keep an eye on it. Burns suck. I think I'd rather have surgery than a bad burn.

Its not guaze, they're plastic. You can put guaze over them to help protect the burn from getting bumped.

Sounds good. Recipe?

I found a recipe and added to it. It only had the honey, garlic & lime juice. I added the ginger & cilantro. You can add more or less, to taste. :)

3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
~1 Tbs ginger, finely chopped
4 Tbsp honey
2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
~1 tsp lime zest
~1 Tbsp cilantro, finely chopped
salt & pepper to taste

Cook the wings as you like - I baked them on racks at 425 for around 40 minutes, then broiled them for 5 to crisp them up. Then tossed with the sauce. You can brush the wings with a little of the sauce first to caramelize them a little, but I just tossed them in the sauce when they were done cooking.

That sounds very, very good Lank...how'd they turn out?
