What Would You Like For The New Name Of This Team?

While I’m disappointed by this, I also have some mixed emotions as well. My position has been to move away from Commanders as it ties back to the old group. I want all ties cut if they can be. But I also understand that this group has had a lot to deal with in their 2 years of owning the team. Most of which have been wildly successful so far. The name change has always seemed like it was the lowest of priorities. The football operations, non football operations, and stadium (and practice facility tied in with that) seem to be the highest priorities. The name change is somewhere below that. And with the stadium/practice facility, that’s going to take several years. So getting that ball rolling is a high priority. It is possible that the name change is still on the table, but is a good ways down the road. It would be foolish to admit that they will change the name in 2030 or some future date as it would affect merchandise sales now.

So yeah, I’m disappointed and a bit disheartened by the new today. But I also understand some of the point of view this ownership group is coming from.
 
Can someone keep us up to date on the amount of backlash this might be receiving on social media ?
 
In my parent's basement, I painted a mural. In it, I put portraits of each of the family members and two things they loved. Prominent in the middle of this mural is a big Redskins helmet. That is part of my legacy and always will be. I came of age to sports at the perfect time to be a Redskins fan with a team whose players I can still name and who carried the city in a way to make us proud. Even our goofballs like Riggins and Dexter were harmless goofballs. So, there is a place in my heart forever for that team and that name.

Here's a bizarre little story. It's even true. Recently, I wrote a novella and a publisher loved it enough to offer me a contract. He wanted a few things changed. One of which was the name of the city in which the novella was set. He told me he hated it. It was a deal breaker.

Me? I rather liked the name and I explained my reasons for choosing it, but it didn't budge him. So, I told him I'd give up the name and did a search and replace with a new name after presenting him with a list. Now, I secretly like the old name better, but c'est le vie. I wasn't going to kill the deal over a name. Ironically, the publisher came back a few weeks later and started complaining how he hated this name to.

Sometimes, you can't get what you want, but as the Rolling Stones sang, you get what you need.
 
Unfortunately, I have to agree that this was probably decided a year ago. I think they were just waiting for the right time to drop the bomb. I was looking forward to embracing a fresh new name, but I guess that ain’t happening. It’s not going to stop me from being a fan of the team, I’ll just be part of the ‘it’s still Redskins to me’ segment of the Fanbase until the time comes that I can move on. And I will move on eventually. I think.

On Bluesky, it seems about 50/50. Mostly posters seem relieved or glad to have it done and over with.
 
Commanders is not a good name.

But if it’s something they’ve embraced so be it.

I’ll still be fan.

But damn that previous incompetent regime and their farce of a name search. Their laziness and incompetence started all this.

More chatter about Miles Garrett honestly than the name issue... which may speak to how that population really feels.

I SO feel this. I am incredibly lucky to have the biggest Skins fans I have known - my grandparents still with me in their 90s. Many family members however, are gone. When you look at old photos of family reunions and get togethers from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, it is chock full of cousins, aunts, uncles, and all manner of family wearing Redskins gear. You would be hard pressed to find a single photo of a family get together that does not have at least one Redskins tee shirt, cap, etc.. in it. Regardless of season or reason for the get together. These memories are dear, especially with so many of those sporting that gear having passed on.

Just like we can't quite understand many of the young folks perspective on being so willing to adopt such a garbage name, it us hard for those young folk to understand why so many of us hold on to the name and the logo so fiercely.
 
Sorry, I’m late to the party. Where is everybody getting their information from that the name is not changing?
 
There's still a small chance this is a deliberately misleading false announcement in order to fool the TM squatters. Maybe like 2% or less chance. Or 1% or less chance.

For example, Coca-cola took away Coke and gave us new Coke. Horrible. Too sweet. Then after a while they brought back the old coke and called it classic coke. Everybody was happy.

Same thing here.

Yeah, I know. I'm grabbin' at straw. I don't care. Laugh if you want.
 
It's unfortunate the team is sticking with it. If I had to guess, I think the ownership group just doesn't want to deal with the expense of changing the name again. It's easier to just wait it out until people get used to it.

I don't like it anymore than I did on day 1, but I guess we get to be called "commies" for the long haul. Cool.

If i had to guess I'd say it was the team gelling way earlier than expected and have been using phrases like take command and what it is to be a commander and play commander football and they see no good reason to change what's working.

They know there are better options but they also know What we all know is that the choices are all so polarizing there's no need to jump out of the frying pan that has cooled down considerably and into a hot fire.

The only way they'd ever truly understand is if as Commanders, we had a kick-ass logo, a decade of winning seasons, followed by another decade of winning seasons along with four Super Bowl appearances and three Lombardi trophies, and then remained loyal to them for three decades and then...
No more Commanders
No more logo.
