Welcome to the Commanders - Jayden Daniels

I'm still scratching my head over that one.

So too is the Falcons fan I was sitting next to at the school function last night.

You sign Cousins to a big-money, 4-year deal, then draft a guy in the single digits to back him up knowing that unless Kirk gets hurt or suddenly retires you will have decide on a 5th year option without ever seeing Penix on the field in the regular season? Seems crazy to me.

If Cousins were on a 2 year deal, I could see it. But Penix turns 24 in May. Yes - QBs can play a long time, but it is a big of a surprise even acknowledging that. Cousins and his camp are reportedly pissed, and I guess that's understandable to some degree. This seems like something where, if it's even the remotest possibility you are considering, that it would be smart to discuss with your newly signed starting QB ahead of time.

In terms of how it went down, it feels pretty 'impulsive'...

I believe that Cousins deal only has 2 years of guaranteed money, but still.

Penix could possibly not start his 1st game in the NFL until he is 26-27.

and the medias are blasting the interwebz with the video of what appears to be the GM explaining to the owner what went down.

I'll go back to what I said previously, I'll support whoever they pick, none of the three would've gotten me excited, hell Caleb Williams wouldn't have gotten me excited (or as my Bears buddy calls him Fields 2.0). I wouldn't call it dread, wouldn't call it sunshine and rainbows either. Go F'ing win then I'll be excited. Right now none of us have a damn clue how this turns out and I can see both the positive Jayden peeps, the negative Jayden peeps and the middle as well. Of course I'm a bit of a pessimist going into this season as I picked the under in total wins. I think much of my melancholy revolves around the fact I would've loved to have run it back with Howell, traded down and built the rest of the team up before going QB. That's not Jayden's fault nor would it have been Maye's or J.J. had we gone that route, I know I'd still feel the same, let's see what we've got when it actually matters first.

I don't blame Cousins for being pissed although I'm guessing he is pissed for different reasons than I think he should be.

That pick should be a difference-maker this year. That pick could have been the best Edge-rusher in the draft. It could have Odunze to bookend with London. It could have been Olu to protect the massive investment the team just made in Cousins.

Instead, they pick a guy who really can't help a Cousins lead team unless Cousins gets hurt.

Seriously weird.

The only thing Daniels and RGIII have in common is a slight frame.

Daniels is a more than competent pocket passer and can read defenses, a skill that RGIII never developed despite his dressing up in a suit and tie on ESPN and making believe he had this great career which gives him a unique perspective on the NFL.

Jayden was not at the top of my list, mostly due what I consider reasonable concerns about his frame and body type. When he runs I will be watching through my fingers like a Joey Slye XP attempt. There is no doubt in my mind that he can be a very good QB, but I hope he can be an ‘available’ very good QB.

In hindsight, I need to walk-back my over-the-top JJ love a tad. Though his intangibles are off the charts to me…I don’t think he brings the skills to the position that Jayden does if Jayden stays healthy. I also think that ultimately JJ landed in the absolute best place possible for him and I will watch his journey with interest.

Overall, I just didn’t see in Drake what so many did. There is certainly a lot to like and he seems to be a high quality young man, but I have had and still have concerns in my gut that are difficult to articulate. So I won’t try. Those concerns may be completely wrong and therefore I am pretty happy that he is going to NE and not NY.
Almost 100% agree with this post, for me. The concerns about Jayden, the feelings on JJ, the feelings on Drake. It seems like JJ is in a place which is more "ready" - especially in terms of OL. I am hopeful about Quinn, but right now I think KoC is the more proven commodity. Outside of the Commanders themselves, Minnie will be VERY interesting to watch, just to see how it all shakes out.

He did a credible job here. Saying he was just grateful for being drafted and getting to play in the NFL is not something Caleb Williams would have said.

Minnesota was an 11 win team before Kirk got hurt. They have several years of drafting high with a good front office lead on us.

I don't expect us to be where they are in one draft.

Does Peters/Quinn come in with a Darrisaw at LT or a Jefferson at WR?

No.

We are basically an expansion team - Ron left us with 3 or 4 real pieces and the rest is strictly driftwood.

But if Daniels is truly a difference maker and JJ becomes the solid to good quarterback most think he will be Washington will ultimately have an advantage.

That's why QB is such an important get in 2024.

The idea of trading down and NOT taking a quarterback and waiting until 2025 didn't make any sense.

Unless Washington had a strategy to tank again except this time go 1-15 and get Sam Hartman.

I wonder if NY not picking a QB surprised Atlanta and they were like, "Penix is still on the board? Let's take him!" or something.

Even so, the move makes no sense. I think we've been over this. :)

Yeah - I think he has some genuine humility that's sincere and I don't think anyone has ever questioned Daniels work ethic. I thought he did a great job there.

hopefully, the media will now move on to how Daniels does in Washington not how he feels about Peters and playing golf with the other quarterbacks

Well, he did say exactly that - the agent at least is quoted publicly saying things like, we were confused why the team wasn't helped more to get stronger with the pick.

The other thing is, this kind of move is usually reserved for the "Haves" of the league. The ones who have it figured it out. I don't hate Fontenot; I don't think he's an idiot, but I guess this does seem weird to me. I ALSO believe, though - if you look at the pick and how value works...

I mean, this is one of the reasons keeping Howell also made more sense to me. Yes, he may want to start (so, too, may Penix). So? Maybe it's better for him to learn? Maybe it's better for him to be a backup for a bit? Meanwhile, there are going to be teams who want a QB. That's going to happen. This is a league that values QBs extremely highly, and in so doing, at least in some places, there are almost unequivocal reaches at the position. If you grab a QB, you have some "stored value" from your pick there (and Howell would have had "stored value" too, in other ways too - making the #2 more of a commodity). I am not at all saying they drafted him to trade him; the public comments have all been comparing it to Jordan Love. I get that. However, I don't think there's a huge downside, I think they drafted what they thought was BPA at that spot in the draft, which is usually conventional wisdom. They probably thought very highly of Penix and may have based it more on a WAR analysis.

I can see the thinking, but given where their roster was at, I fully expected them to trade back. They must have really liked Penix.

I didn't know Cousins got only 2-years guaranteed. Is that true? Wow. He kept talking about how ATL was going to be his last stop. How can 2-years guaranteed, for Cousins, be his last stop? He's "Mr. Guaranteed" money. Seems strange to me.

Quinn was in for Daniels way back IMO. It just took the others their due diligence period to catch up

So Peters said in Daniels introductory presser that Jayden was the #1 player on their board.

I do believe Quinn was being unexpectedly honest by giving Daniels the ultimate compliment for him - 'game changer' in that interview.

Quinn used the same terms again in talking about the pick and that explosive ability was one of his 'must haves' for quarterbacks according to his review of the position, etc.

Quinn and Kingsbury are happy as clams.
