TRADED: Brian Robinson to 49ers for 2026 6th

I listed to Dan Quinn talking about Chris Rodriguez and what he sees which is different:

“Conditioning for sure. This is a guy who's changed his body and now is allowed, the passing game he's more fluid to go into that. He's always been a strong runner. That was Chris coming out from college at Kentucky to here. And you saw that in the way he got his opportunity, some in some four minutes to finish some games, but he's very consistent in his tracks, in his run game. I've seen that, what I have seen, this elevated conditioning that allows him, now there's more ops on punt, there's more ops on other spaces, so he's really, by doing that, giving himself more ops and he's off to a good start.”

I think you also saw a huge burst from him on his long run. The staff was frustrated with CRod's conditioning last year, and made no bones about stating that. This year is different. I think when you get into better shape, you can take the "he's always been a strong runner" and turn those strong runs into explosive runs.

Which is what we saw on Monday night.

Maybe it's just me, but CRod just looked quicker to accelerate, and he hit the holes hard.

Brian Robinson, I just find him to be slow to the hole, can't avoid contact, and while he has been good at breaking tackles, he seems to run into tackles he then has to break.

So while CRod might be similar in a lot of ways, vision can actually make you more explosive if you can avoid the dude trying to tackle you.

i mentioned him working on his speed. And I just posted an article on it. Coming out of college though his speed was just about identical to Brian. He was not a speed guy. i am sure they love that he's improved his speed but that's not his wheel house in his career.

He's a power runner. And a better power runner IMO than Robinson. If he adds a little speed to that power, awesome but that feels like gravy. Croskey-Merritt brings speed.

In short, I am not getting the impression that they really like Robinson as you mentioned, unless you mean as a dude. But as runner, i got 4 different local reporters suggesting that they were frustrated by Brian.

Why not just dump him from the jump? They'd be dumb to do it that way for three reasons.

A. Maybe ala Rodriguez they'd see a jump from Brian in camp
B. Injuries. you could lose a guy or two, so why not keep everyone around and let it play out
C. the other RBs. How good are these guys especially Croskey-Merritt why not let the script play out before dumping Robinson

Rodriguez, at 5-foot-11 and 224 pounds, is a bruising runner. While at Kentucky, he was often compared to a bowling ball. The physicality comes from his time playing center as a young kid.

I'm sure they were frustrated with him, we all were frustrated with him.

I mean, clearly they don't like him enough to give him a jersey. Mostly because he had too many runs that went nowhere. Shrug.

I also wasn't one of the huge Chris Rodriguez guys. I thought he was fine.

I'm glad he worked at his conditioning and his speed.

Some of the scheme stuff is what Bram has said on his show. He might have heard that or he might not have, it's unclear, but he said it multiple times.

Rodriguez averaged more than half a yard per carry than Robinson last year. That's before diving into the deeper numbers.

I think Robinson is the biggest fools gold we've had on this team in a long time. He doesn't have that many defenders among our fans. But the ones who like him, it comes across more to me that its the image and narrative of Brian Robinson more so than the player. Same within the local media defenders (its a minority, too).

You look at this big bruising back from Alabama and think power, power, power. He is a walking Marvel Movie Super Hero looking back. lol, how can he not be this bruising violent runner that blows up defenses?

But watching him, he's been really dissapointing me to as to the "power". If people want to argue he's a hit-miss, high variable power back -- OK, I can go with that, it comes and goes with him. But he's not been IMO a consistently good power back.

And many of us have pushed Rodriguez as the better back and yes better power back. Quinn in the segment below talks about Rodriguez now being the short yardage back-goal line guy going forward.

I am not a huge Rodriguez guy myself but I do like him.

I think Rodriguez is for real what some of Robinson defenders say Robinson is. That is, a good (not great) power back without much burst. He gets tough yards and makes something out of nothing at a decent level -- not elite -- but showed enough flashes that he is good at it.

Robinson IMO is an average power back without much burst. As to getting tough yards, he's up and down. But not consistent. If we are in the SB and we were on the 1 yard line and needed to punch it in, I'd bet against Robinson.

Then the other stuff to me is annoying about Robinson. The bulletin board material he gave to the Eagles and Lions. the idea that he has nothing to improve on, etc. And some of the other things I've mentioned. I am really interested in knowing what Standig heard and that he alluded to on his podcast today. Maybe someday he will reveal.

As to Rodriguez, I gather what hurt him among other things is supposedly was meh last year in camp. And i gather wasn't in the best shape. But in his small doses, he clearly out performed Robinson so it seemed odd that he wasn't giving more chances. Clearly, he's had a big off season, and he's finally surpassed Robinson enough in their eyes where they could let Robinson go. And adding some speed is a nice bonus.

Sand Dog The Chargers may be a team of mild interest in BRob with Najee's eye clearly fucked up... not sure how fast eye firework injuries heal.

They look like they have solid depth... I am curious do we cut him or keep him inactive and see if team wants to trade after week 1. Also curious who our backup hands back is.

I really liked BRob on and off the field at first. I have since cooled quite a bit since. To me he just never looked the same after one of those "unspecified" knee injuries in 2023. No numbers I can point to, just the eye test on his runs. If I remember correctly he only missed a game or two, but he just looked different to me.

In 2025, I don't see anything irreplaceable with him. He is a serviceable NFL back, but nothing jumps out to justify a new contract.

I think this gets done today or over the weekend. The cutdown day is Tuesday, so something has to happen by then. I doubt they would wait until Tuesday to just cut him. I think they would release him before then so he's out in front of other RBs who might get cut on Tuesday, mostly as a curtesy to him. Again, I don't think they have ill-will towards him. Frustrated by his play, probably, not a good scheme fit, absolutely, but I get the feeling they like the person, and will try and do right by him.

So either he is traded, which could happen today or tomorrow, or released by the end of the day Sunday is my guess. That allows him to find a home before Tuesday's cuts.

Calling my shot, I think he's traded tomorrow by 3:47pm. :p

I like when teams release a vet before any cuts are needed and proclaim they are doing THEM a favor to give them more time to catch on with a new team.

Funnily enough, I've never really been a BRob fan. Not that I hated him or anything, but just never really felt anything toward him.
Sometimes I'll watch us and think 'Man I need a *insert player name here* jersey*!'.
I needed a Terry Jersey. I need a Daniels jersey. Kinda want Wagner, Sainristil and Luvu jerseys...
Back in the RGIII years I really wanted a Morris Jersey.

But I have never wanted a BRob jersey. Never crossed my mind.
I rooted for him because he was a player on our team, but can't say I'll miss him when he's gone.

He never really struck me as a difference maker on the team, and (if I'm honest) I was always waiting for the trade or draft pick that would replace him.

Allbright still thinks a cut is more likely but…

We’ll see

Yeah, I liked the BRob story when he came back from a gunshot wound, and I figured he was hobbled that first year, but he never really got any better.

There was a time even having a solid player was a relief given the general incompetence and overall lack of talent. BRob was solid and for a while somewhat consistent.

I can dig it. Not even conditional.

You have to figure any Rivera third rounder can't be worth more than a sixth ;)

About what we all expected, and much better than freely cutting him. Adios, BRob 🫡

At least we traded him to a team we don't play this year. No need to worry about BRJ pulling off a Mitchell Tinsley stunt in 2025.

:)
