Most stadiums - I really don't know. I would assume so. Yes, NW Stadium has a few holding cells. I saw them and a bunch of other stuff when they gave the Fan Captains a tour of the stadium.

If it’s anything like Nats Park, it’s going to be an utter fiasco. The good thing is, though, they will be dealing with Harris and Co., and not Selig, Dupuy and those buffoons.

Commissioner Ebony Payne (7D05) told the crowd at a Friends of Kingman Park (FOKP) meeting that representatives of the Washington Commanders told her they were planning for a 65,000 person stadium with parking for about 10-12,000 vehicles in two garages with limited surface parking lots.

Commissioners say that the team had a site plan, a map indicating what type of development would go where on the campus, but no concept designs or drawings. Payne said the team did mention that they were considering a super dome style stadium. Both commissioners emphasized that no agreements have been reached.

Astmann told the Hill Rag that from his brief meeting with Commanders representatives, he understood that about 75 percent of the parking would be provided in parking garages.

There were some in the room who said they would support an NFL stadium at the site, “if it was done right.” A large contingent of people were concerned about the fate of the 1500-square-foot Maloof Skate Park on campus and the adjacent DC Vault facility, as well as programs that use the fields and facilities. Other attendees had questions about the level of environmental remediation that might be necessary to develop the site and concerns about the potential impact on the river.

So far the tone of the meeting is that Ward 7 and the Mayor are gung ho on a stadium for the team. There will be questions at the end. I would say people who don’t want the stadium here outnumber those that do but most of them probably live in ward 6.

Right now she is talking about the nationals and the transformation that Navy Yard underwent.

Bowser just stated again that the stadium would be one built to host a Super Bowl.

There isn’t enough fight from the nimbys. They are disorganized and weak.

Surprised nobody has brought this up yet in the potential loss of traditional tailgating at the new stadium if it’s goes to RFK. The mayor plans to use parking garages, which of course isn’t surprising given the amount of space and that it will certainly be mixed use. I personally don’t care but I know that’s important to a lot of the fans. For where I am these days I’d rather just enter the complex earlier and have a few drinks inside before the game.

Interesting. It makes sense that it would go this route, and it would be disappointing for many.

I think one solution that is done in other locales is to just find a place to have a tailgate that is "convenient enough" and then get to the game following that. The tailgate can be an "organized point you go to the game from" - as long as it's "convenient enough." Being metro accessible, it may open some reasonable options for that definition.

It sounds fine, but I imagine there are those who would really miss the other aspects involving the traditional tailgating experience. I guess if we can find a "convenient enough" place that has the parking... I am not sure what that would look like though. Maybe with the Metro, going out of the city would be an option, especially if balancing against the desire to maintain the traditional tailgating tradition.

I doubt seriously many of the people that will buy seat licenses have much interest in tailgating. This stadium is going to reshape the demographics of season ticket holders.

IMO, you want to instill a college-age enthusiasm for your pro team, and one of the ways to do that is a good tailgate system close to the stadium. Let the flags fly and the music play and the pigs cook, and the fans tell stories and laugh and make friends and share fan camaraderie. It's an important part of the experience for many. Key word: Important.

But OTOH, I thought the native-American logo was important and I thought fixing the fight song was important and I thought changing the c-word was important. And yet, here we are.

I was discussing politics quite a while ago with a good friend. And one of the things he pointed out was, if you think you're right and most people think you're wrong, then you're wrong. On the other hand, if you KNOW you're right - due to experience, education, life lessons, age-earned wisdom, etc. - and most people think you're wrong, then you're STILL wrong.

Old tailgating was burgers and dogs, potato salad cole slaw chips etc. New tailgating is crab cakes smoked beef or pork and some pretty great but costly food. Prices for seats are just gonna continue to rise, especially with seat licenses. But ain't nothing better than hanging with fellow fans for a great burger and a beer. I never brought anything to tailgates but I made sure to always pay generously to those who provided.
