The Stadium Thread

What would be nice is if they find a way to get the fans into the stadium earlier with relatively inexpensive food and beer and everybody can just tailgate in the place.

A big part of the problem is the cost and a lot of people don’t wanna spend the money in the stadium for the amount of food and alcohol they want to consume. There is a way forward that doesn’t involve parking lot tailgating, but they would have to be creative and enable your average every day fan who makes average every day money an opportunity to go in and have a good time.

As long as the new stadium has 21st century food options (plantbased) I’m good. Tired of out of date menu options. We are a major world city, our menu options should reflect that. I couldn’t care less about “tailgating”. I’m taking the metro in and I suspect most fans will do the same.

I would be just fine bringing the Italian sub from the market across the street from me and not having to worry about lugging all the stuff to grill; or get up early, make ribs and bring them with me. Chill in the parking lot, smoke a cigar. There are many ways to enjoy a tailgate. Plus garage makes it better for rainy games.

It's all how you look at life!

Damn if ole Riggo ain’t taking lemons and making lemonade. This is actually a great point!!

I don't know. I think for a lot of fans, the fun is in coming up with the tailgate menu, prepping, and actually grilling or preparing food for the folks they came to the game with - I think there will always be a large portion of game attendees who want a real tailgating experience, not just grab something inside the stadium. Just my humble opinion.

I wonder what the logistics of entering and exiting from garages will be.
If they don't design them with an abundance of entrances and exits getting in and out could be a total nightmare.
At foxboro it can take 2 to 3 hours to get to the highway with all surface lots, with garages it'd feel hopeless.

I've tailgated at Foxboro. An ES tailgate! It was not nearly as easy as FedExField. As I recall, the Mass State Police wouldn't let us line up anywhere before the lots opened. They were chasing us off. Then when the lots finally opened and we finally set up and tailgated, it was a wooded area. I'm not even sure if the area was associated with the stadium. And then it was a long walk to the stadium. You could see it, but took time to get there. Not quite the same or as cool as tailgating on the ring road of FedExField.

Same thing with Atlanta. And St. Louis. And Seattle. And Tampa. The tailgate lots are not adjacent to the stadium. But at least they were open lots. I would not want to park or tailgate in a parking garage tyvm.

Yeah it doesn't help that with foxboro you have route 1 and thats literally it.
They close off all secondary streets because the neighborhood complained and funnel everyone onto one state highway.

But still garages feel like a recipe for disaster as far as getting out after the game unless planned well.

Bingo…. Garages will be a total mess imho… unless you leave the game early 4th or stay well beyond the ending garages aren’t the way to go for what 70-80k fans at 1 time…. NFL isn’t MLB where the Nats hardly ever sell out and even if they do the capacity is what 30k less then a NFL Stadium… personally I don’t want no parts of a shuttle system or parking garages….neither of them is anything less then a total fans experience… it will be a experience alright…. Just not a positive 1

Capacity at Nats Park is about 45K. I always stick around after games let traffic clear out, especially if I am in one of the garages. I expect the New RFK to be around 70K?

Don’t underestimate how many people would forego tailgating if the metro line drops you off at the stadium.

More metro riders means less cars.

They have these options now at the current North West Stadium

I would hope they include the area around the DC Armory. Demolish it and literally make it a field. Host carnivals and other outdoor events there, but it's a parking area that resembles a fairgrounds that would allow for a bit of tailgate parking.

My though is though, that they will utilize that space as 'mosaic' type district where there's retail and restaurants with office buildings / apartments on top of it. I have a feeling that Tailgating is going to be non existent in the new digs at RFK with the home gameday experience being closer to a Nats / Caps gam than what we're currently accustomed to. I'm not saying that's what I want, just think that's the inevitability of how gameday experience is changin.

I would imagine there will be opportunities for tailgating, it just wont be 'on site' of the stadium. The emphasis will be to utilize the bars and stuff around the area to congregate before a game starts. I could also see a 'bullpen' type situation like they have at Nats games where there's an open lot that has vendors and live music, food truck options, and essentially a giant beer garden that people can come 'rally' at before the game.

Sounds like they are building an urban shopping mall that, among other things, features an NFL franchise. Pike & Rose with the NFL.

Color me cynical.

I think he meant parking lots that are dedicated to Tailgating to the tune of 10k available spots.

Yeah I'm just not sure how that would work.

How do you prevent people from buying the passes just to park?

Do you charge more so its not practical unless you're tailgating, and is that fair to the tailgaters?

You can't go around making sure people are grilling and mingling.

Just seems unfeasible to me.
