The Offense!

I disagree with you both to an extent. You can desperately need a player, but still make a big mistake by vastly over-paying for him. You only have so much cap room and over-paying at one spot can limit who you can sign or extend at other spots (not to mention create resentment from the guys you aren’t wildly over-paying).

As for Trent Williams, he has missed on average 5 games per season over the past 7 years. He hasn’t played 16 games since 2013. If for no other reason than that you don’t give him the kind of stupid money the 49ers are paying him. He’s still a very good LT but not sure I’d call him a top 5 descriptor, especially when he hasn’t been super durable.

I should have said "his on field play is top 5" The problem is of course.. how often he's not on the field.

FWIW the team and Scherff haven’t talked any #’s yet since the franchise tag. Figured if they REALLY wanted him past 2021 they wouldve started the haggling by now.

Grant and Danny were talking about this and they made the point that the deadline isn't til July 15th. They also pointed out that most deals aren't going to get even close to getting done til that deadline is on the horizon. I don't think they even consider talking til after the draft, that has the biggest effect imho. If they are able to draft his replacement....

The reality is a 29/30 year old guard who has an injury history is historically not a great bet to break the bank for. Not at $17-18M a year.

Somewhere along the line the franchise tag, instead of being a 'holding' salary during negotiations of a long term deal, all of a sudden has become the basis for a per year average for the player going forward.

That's great for the individual if they can get it. But you have to be careful if you are the team, evaluating in part the position the player plays on the field.

I can see why a team like the Chiefs with a $450M quarterback is spending mega-bucks to upgrade the OL after the performance in the Super Bowl.

But having Patrick Mahomes or a top 3-5 passer is a bit different situation than the Redskins find themselves in.

A quarterback like Mahomes can help win a game even if the Chiefs don't invest a lot of resources in positions such as LB, S, or resign big dollar guys on the DL, etc.

Guards don't have that multiplier effect on most teams. A team like Washington that is looking to build an all-around team while waiting to acquire its franchise passer either in the draft or next year (most likely) would not be smart to invest $17-18M in a mature player whose next couple of years take him out of his prime in the NFL.

Better to keep him on the one year tender and look to see if we can draft OL depth and develop an in-house candidate like Saahdiq Charles, who may be moved inside to OG from the outside.

That way we get stability for 2021 and a chance to improve without the pressure of coming up with an answer in the next 3-6 months.

I go back to Ereck Flowers. He was drafted #9 overall by the Giants to play LT and failed miserably. He was released by NY and ended up coming to Washington on a one year deal to move to guard. He took to the position and earned a large contract with Miami at age 26.

There really aren't that many positions in the NFL where you can fail for 3-4 years and then switch to another and become successful.

The trajectory of a number of players on the OL and inside DL show that at those positions, as opposed to quarterback or franchise pass rusher, can in fact be developed to play these spots at a solid NFL level or better despite rather humble beginnings.

As with running back and tight end, I don't see any reason to break the bank at guard unless you have a 25-26 year old player who has been a consistent exemplar and top 5 during his career and has shown the durability to at least project out to fulfilling the term of his new deal.

And the position of the team as a rebuilding team, ascending team, contending team or championship team again is important factor in the consideration of how one allocates the dollars. A team like KC or LA Rams who may feel they are ALL in for 2021 will make different decisions than a team like Washington that is still building and needs a few more key pieces and has to re-up some younger, budding star players.

True there’s time to get it done before the season starts but I still think that for whatever reasoning it doesn’t. This little piece stated they made him an offer to be the highest paid guard and Scherff turned it down. I’d see a grand draft if the team takes Darrisaw and the best OG available with one of the 3rds.

I posted on the other FA thread about Scherff allegedly turning down a large offer from Washington. I don't know if it's true or not.

But we know from last year the discussion was Scherff looking for a record setting deal that would out-do what Norwell got.

Of course Norwell was signed by the worst, stupidest team in the league, Jacksonville that finished #32 in 2020.

So, in my mind a SMART team does not go after a contract as a target made by a poor front office for a player that (good for him) ripped them off royally.

That's what allowed NE and Pittsburgh and Baltimore remain contenders for so long in the 2000's, they rarely give out the record-setting deals.

And then when they do it is for top players at their positions, positions of importance that are hard to find in the draft.

Not merely for the 'best available' player at a spot in free agency in a given year.

I still laugh at Le'Veon Bell's situation in Pittsburgh and at age 27/28 what he has done for big dollars since he left the Steelers.

They got his best years - his first 4 in the NFL - and teams like the Jets end up paying him in the rear view mirror for that past production.

Remember the Patriots letting Malcolm Butler walk in free agency?

Tennessee got a good corner but not a top 5 player. They overpaid at a position where NE was able to find capable players to replace him and go to 3 more Super Bowls after his departure.

Really have a lot of potential there. And really love Rivera's energy. Despite working for an owner from you know where. Classy guy. Just hope that the offense can really bulk up there.

Hope he doesn’t end up like Reed, incredible player when healthy but always out due to injury

Given the fact we sat through 5-6 years of Trent Williams playing far less than a 16 game schedule, I am not so quick to put a label on Gibson after his first season in the NFL. Yes, he got dinged, but it was his first season playing running back full-time and his injuries were nowhere near what we saw from Derrius Guice to set off early red flags.

If you looked at every starting RB across the league every year, I’d say it’s not very likely most of them play all 16 games, or escape injury even if they do. There’s a reason RBs tend to be done by age 30 and sometimes earlier, especially if they are used between the tackles.

He's currently still injured. Saying he needs to prove his durability is not off base at all.

Toe injuries on someone that needs to plant their foot and make cuts is a big deal.

I think there’s a difference between someone who got injured and is still battling through it, and labeling a player as ‘injury prone’. He didn’t miss significant time last year even though he was hurt. As with all players, injuries are mostly beyond their control. All we can do is see how it goes and hope it doesn’t become a long-term thing. But again, RB is one of the most punishing positions and RB injuries are common.

He is currently dealing with a toe injury
He missed 2 games last year with injury
He did not get over 1000 yards rushing

He is not the #1 back outright. He needs to prove he is durable and capable of doing the job before he is crowned.

He’s absolutely the #1 back. Every young player will have durability questions, until they show they are durable :) You’re making way too big a deal over a case of turf toe imho and for some reason seem to have a hard on for one of our best players last year. Will someone beat him out for the starting role or will he be injury- plagued throughout his career? Certainly possible but right now that’s a big leap.

No, I posted a news article stating he is dealing with a toe injury. You seem to be very defensive of him and downplaying how serious turf toe/toe injuries can be to players.

But, hey....we all have our player crushes :)
