Tinnitus is actually a claim with the VA but it gets you 0% after standing around on watch outside while the navy ships shoot off hundreds of 5inch rounds. You get nothing.

Yet you can stand in the chow line, demand seconds over and over until you become obese, get a CPAP machine after nobody can deal with your snoring and get a 50% disability.

Then lose weight and have a permanent disability while those of us will tinnitus have it forever. 🥂

I have major hearing loss and some tinnitus from my military service, but my first interaction with my local VA office was not great. I was investigating the possibility of moving to VA medical benefits and was given bad information all the way up until it came time to sign up and was then informed I was not eligible. I had given the woman I was working with all of the relevant information up front, she just apparently wasn't paying attention to anything I was saying. It was about what I expected based on what I've read about the VA.

I had a major health issue after Desert Shield/Storm that permanently effected my diaphragm and ability to do hard exercise. I was a big distance runner prior to this issue but was never able to run any significant distance after that. I am no doubt disabled to some degree and I have no doubt it was service connnected, but I decided long ago I wasn't going to pursue 'disability'. I consider possible injury due to service part of the gig and I am able to do 99% of what I want to be able to do, so I've just decided to live with it. No offense to anyone else who is on disability. At least I do not have to deal with the VA and their apparent ineptitude.

Pretty sure they cut the disability percentage for sleep apnea. Way too many turds going to the VA claiming they snore loudly and getting 50%, which was always bullshit. I knew a dude that did that, they gave him a machine and it's sat in his closet ever since. And if you're interested, I got 10% on my tinnitus. But that's the limit they'll give you

Have you ever had a VA evaluation and/or submitted your paperwork? Please tell me you have. You're losing money if you haven't

It's not that bad. You get the DAV guys or someone from the Legion to go thru your records, they submit the package and then the VA gets ahold of you to do a physical. That's the last time you have to see the VA if you want. A few months later they come down with your ratings and you start getting money tax free .

The way I see it, your body paid the price of service. Being able to earn some disability is one of your earned benefits, which makes up for the shitty pay. I had a friend who I was working with, along wiht other vets, in the FAA. We were all doing our VA packages and he kept blowing it off. He did that for years. When he finally did go to the VA because his back is now REALLY jacked, they gave him 80%. He lost thousands over the years that he blew off doing his package.
