The HC Dan Quinn Discussion Thread

Mike MacDonald should have been the hire. Those Ravens/ Michigan coordinators (Minter and MacDonald) have been something else.

My first choice, as well. Seattle didn’t fuck around, made a quick decision and locked him up.

We have a former member who had inside information due to knowing MacDonald's wife. Apparently, all things were barreling towards him ending up in Washington, but the especially 'deliberate' process was taking too long for MacDonald's liking, or made him feel less wanted than Seattle who swooped in and got their guy.

I believe had MacDonald not made that snap decision, he would've been AP's choice, but that's just my sense of things.

One thing we always need to be careful of, just because MacDonald is having major success in his current location doesn't automatically mean it would've gone the same in DC. It doesn't work that way. We don't know what would've happened had he been the choice.

As to whether he will ultimately have more success than Quinn, we don't know the answer to that. Quinn made it to a Super Bowl in Atlanta, and almost made it to the Super Bowl in his first season in DC. We can apply all of the 'yeah, buts...' we want to those two accomplishments, but they are still facts. MacDonald won 10 games in his first season in Seattle but missed the playoffs.

My point is, it's not a 'fact' or a 'given' that he will be more successful than Quinn. At least not yet...

Okay, but blowing a 28-3 lead in that Super Bowl, losing that NFC Championship 55-23, and following it up with this 4-11 stinker of a season are pretty big “yeah, buts.”

And I actually like DQ and think he deserves time to right the ship, but the skepticism about him is completely warranted at this point.

I'm more concerned about Peters. He needs to do much better this April and in offseason acquisitions this coming year. IMO, this past off season was less than stellar

DQ is a career .500 coach, with a history of awful clock and game management skills.

Ownership has already given him a vote of "no confidence", in terms of neutering his DC, and by taking away his decision-making in regard to when Jayden plays. Just like a 16 year old driver, he's not smart or aware enough to be trusted with the keys to a nice car.

He's Ron Rivera 2, and he's done. I just don't know if there is an obvious Dan Campbell or Mike Macdonald out there to choose from.

I've kinda been out of the loop for the last month or so, but can we expect a new DC next year?? That would be a good start and obviously purge some of old guys on that side of the ball

I’m over Quinn but just for the sake of conversation on this board being worth anything, I’m not just going to let your factual-sounding statements stand without pushback lol. Zero indication beyond speculation that ownership had anything to do with Quinn finally yanking playcalling from Whitt, zero indication beyond speculation that ownership had to make Quinn bench Daniels.

Just for the record. You’re falling very deeply into narratives that are appealing to you and it’s warping all your posts.

(With you on Quinn long term btw, just think the stuff you’re latching onto in your posts, and the surety with which you say it, is annoying)

It was leaked to Rapoport that it was a group decision to sit Daniels and that group included Harris

The decision to bench Jayden has been reported as a group decision, including the FO.

It’s normal for the GM and owner to be looped into a decision like that, you’re talking about (if everything goes well), a future half billion dollar asset in a young franchise QB.

That isn’t the same as ownership making the decision and a “vote of no confidence”. People imagining that the meeting was Quinn fighting to keep Jayden active and ownership/GM overruling him are just making that up. It’s a group meeting and decision because that’s the franchise’s most valuable asset outside of the new stadium location. Doesn’t mean there was any disagreement over it, or “overruling” that occurred.

I’ve also already argued that it’s totally normal for a GM to overrule his HC on this if necessary. I don’t want ownership doing it unilaterally but a GM…yeah. He’s in charge of setting the long term goals of the franchise and keeping that in mind each week. No different than benching Sweat before trading him because you know you’re finalizing the details, when the HC wants him to help win the next game, or whatever. Happens all the time.

The HC cooks the weekly meals with the groceries he’s given. The GM provides those groceries and sets the future menu, hopefully in conjunction with what his coaches do well, if he’s smart and they’re good enough to plan around. The owner holds people accountable when the food isn’t good or the menu is losing money. That’s all normal.

The way he presented it isn’t what we’re lead to believe happened, at all. And the conclusions drawn (that ownership stepped in and overruled Quinn as a vote of no confidence) have no basis in reality.

See my last post. That isn’t what you described and doesn’t imply the lesson you took from it. At all. Be intellectually honest when making your posts at least, otherwise what are we doing here.

I'm glad the FO was involved in the decision, as they should be. DQ went from "he could have gone back in the game" to "he's out for the rest of the year" quickly.

It was also reported that DQ was under "heavy pressure" in regard to making a switch with Whitt.

In the latter, I'm speculating that some of that pressure came from the FO wanting better results, and not just the fans.

I totally agree. Was reaffirming your point that it was an organizational decision that included Quinn. I’d be surprised if Quinn was pounding the table to play him. All downside, no upside by doing so

Makes sense. Also makes it tougher for the FO to assess the talent and needs when the playcalling is terrible.

Ownership isn’t the same as the FO anymore, I think we have to get used to that. The FO having a say in football decisions is normal. Ownership being looped in is normal.

Asserting that “ownership” is making unilateral decisions or cutting Quinn’s legs out from under him is a different point entirely to make, and isn’t normal in most circumstances. Ownership will always be looped in and have a voice in decisions that impact the franchise or the wallet in a big way, of course.

But referring to the FO in a post, in my mind, refers to the football people at the top of the org. Peters, namely. You’re using the term interchangeably for some reason. Which would’ve been normal under Snyder

Not in 2026, but in 2027, or 2028, Curt Cignetti might be the next big college name that teams consider chasing.
