It's frustrating. Terry has been a great 'skin and his joy on the field was all of our joy. It was the cathartic expression of relief after so many years of misery on and off the field. Still, Terry is 30 and he has been a B+ player and not an A+ player so if time steals anything from him, he will drop into that good receiver category (which you still want and need) but not that number one receiver category that makes defensive coordinators pull out their hair and decide the coverage needs to always tilt his way. Sadly, at his best, I'm not sure he was ever the guy who needed to be bracketed and double teamed every down or he'd make a team pay.

Don't get me wrong, he's been good. Very good. Better than the QBing around him and maybe with a Kirk Cousins or better QB during the Snyder years he would have been the receiver I described above, but the reality is he hasn't been. He has been taken out of a lot of games. So, as I said, he's a B+ receiver.

B+ receivers don't grown on trees. We want them. We want to keep them. We also can't treat them like A+ receivers becuse that's what bad teams do and it leaves them i purgatory or worse. That's what the Wizards did when they gave Juwan Howard or Bradley Beal max contracts when they were only very good players. So, I want to keep Terry. I want Terry to want to be here, but I also understand that the team needs to be smart about it.

Kevin Sheehan today was only speculating today about why this wasn't done sooner and something that I hadn't thought about. He said maybe the team is in no hurry, if at all, to have to bank $50-60 mil in guarantees for a contract like TM wants. Maybe they've always just intended to have him play out his current contract. He mentioned all the money they've been spending on stadium and training center upgrades, commitments to a new stadium, etc.

Again, all speculation by Kevin and who knows the real reasons.
 
Of course there was a way not to get to this point. That would involve either a) giving McLaurin what he wants or close to it, or b) letting McLaurin know we would n’t deal with his current agent and unless he found a proven one able to realistically forge a deal, we would not do a new contract.
 
I hope that's not the case. I can imagine Harris and co. becoming cash poor. They've been spending a lot and Harris is a low-end billionaire (as weird as that sounds.)

I’ve been saying this for awhile. Galdi made a point of it today as well. Washington doesn’t have to do a new deal. They have Terry lock stock and barrel for 3 years if they want him and there’s nothing TM can do about it. And based on what we’ve heard, they probably have him locked up for 3 more years at less than what TM would accept in a new contract.
 
If Terry wants to be paid as much as guys younger and better than him at a rate that no other franchise would ever pay, then how in the world could that have been avoided? It couldn’t have, it’s not like they were going to extend him before this past season with Daniels, he had only completely one year of his newest deal before that point. This was always going to happen unless we/he sucked last year. We didn’t and he didn’t.
 
Today didn't impact the Terry situation, but Terry's can't feel too bad about absolutely no one stepping up tonight to make the team feel they have someone on the verge of being ready to step up.

I didn’t watch the game, but I doubt the situation any of the guys played in today was going to help their case.
 
Deebo, on a new deal, is making 17m and it goes up to 20m with incentives. That's an updated contract after joining the Commanders. So, if Terry is going to get his own *updated contract* - well, on a scale in the WR room of the Commanders, 25m makes a lot of sense to me. Terry wants to comp himself outside of the locker room, which is fine, but he's cherry-picking there and there are legitimate concerns that his comps aren't accurate enough (I can see the argument he is making, but I think he needs to be a little real about it and say it's a bit cherry-picked as well). I feel like he is really looking at one or two guys and ignoring 10 or 11 guys, maybe more when you factor age concerns in and the data there.

It just seems like Terry's desire doesn't fit on the Commanders current WR pay scale, and at least right now, that's that. I don't find that a bad way of doing business.

I keep reading people here talking about the team not giving him a new contract, but we have to recognize, that is pretty much standard operating procedure for most NFL Teams with players they like who produce. In their contract year, the team works out a new contract. So, it's fair for players to expect that treatment to an extent. If the player and team can't come to an agreement though... here we are. However, let's not make it out to e an easy call to just move on with the current contract. It's not that easy a call, because of the way other teams have been doing business in this kind of situation. It can get tricky on the culture side. Players are watching this stuff and drawing conclusions on the team and how it handles the business-side. That matters.
 
I agree with the sentiment today. Wouldn’t mind a Tyreek Hill trade. Terry is a 70/1000/6 guy. He’s going to start his contract at 31. The team doesn’t need to do anything. Terry is under contract and asking for more money.

This isn’t Cincinnati trying or Dallas being unprofessional. We just aren’t willing to pay Terry more than any other team would.

I think that if Terry is going to be irrational and petty, stating that things like age don’t matter, and using comps that aren’t real comps, let him play out his contract. And let every other player on the team and in the league see that.

Terry was paid better than he deserved, based on production, for most of his contract. Now he has one year where he feels underpaid, and like he should get a new contract commensurate with a top 5 receiver who is 27yo?
 
all i have hear about from TM's camp and the news is how much he wants his AAV to be . . . nothing about guarantees, which is really what matters. To me that paints TM in a negative light as it seems his biggest desire is the be SEEN around the world as one of the very best in the game. Even if its not true. When the team says 10 - 15 range he is 100% butt hurt about the image they are putting on him. TM is way to worried about image!!
 
There are apparently 7 players in for tryouts today after practice. I doubt Cooper would be doing a tryout.

I also doubt they are looking for Terry insurance. That doesn't exist.

However, they might be looking for better depth if they feel like all the guys outside of Deebo and Noah are just not cutting it.

One thing to note on Terry, Keim said this plainly in his podcast: nothing that happened on Friday Night changed Terry's bargaining position. There was no change at all to anything. Which I completely agree with.
 
So, Terry plays for $16M ($25M cap hit) in 2025, turns down $28M but then hopes at 31 next year to get a $30M plus deal from either Washington or another team?

I don’t get the end strategy here.

If Terry wants to bet on himself he can have his agent ask for a guaranteed $28M in 2025 with promise by Washi from the team will not franchise him in 2026 but will allow him to negotiate a co tractor with other clubs.
 
One observation from last year - the team was not getting separation from receivers the first half last year WITH Terry on the field.

Terry did not fair well in the division against the Eagles or Giants during regular season.

For those of you that remember back that far, we used to see Bill Parcells talk about how they prepared for Gary Clark because his explosive playmaking was difficult to check.

I never hear DCs talk about how the defense has to gameplan specifically for Terry and what he does on the field and certainly not to the level Parcells spoke about.

PFF ranks Terry at #10 in the NFL. That feel about right. He’s under contract and team control so he’s not going to get the ‘new contract premium that would put him in the top 5 in terms of ACV and guarantee.

When Terry’s best season is 1096 yards and your #2’s best is 1425 yards it’s not a great look that signals your top receiver is an elite producer.

Everyone in DC is talking about top receivers benchmarks but the truth is when you look at other teams and what some of the best producers in the NFL put up you realize we are talking about very good players here not franchise type guys.

Agree. Been saying that all along. Last year voidable
 
Just remember, typically the extension starts after the original contract expires, so it won’t truly kick in until 2026. However, the signing bonus will be paid now which would be prorated over the entire length of the contract.

The problem is in 2026 Terry is 31. I don’t think they want to commit $30m per year in any way past 2026.

And I don’t think Peters wants to get to $30.

I actually think $28 is more in line with his production. But I have AAV conversations becuase they are essentially meaningless.
 
I feel like TMCs "agents" are leveraging him being a fan favorite. On game days, its not JD5s name you hear the fan base chanting after a nice play.

I'd also wager they are playing the salary escalation card... "his salary will be a bargain in 2027" but in doing so will be raising it themselves.
