The All Things Terry Thread

As some here have been saying. But now that it’s out there in the media sphere, it’ll become a narrative that gets back to Terry and his agent. Leverage is zero, go practice

I think this is the second time Peters and the team let something out into the ether to get a point through to McLaurin.

Also, I really do wonder what they talked about today.

It's just a 10 second clip, but it looked to me like McLaurin had his head down the whole time, barely looking at Peters, and very little conversation. Certainly nothing in that clip that would lead one to optimism. And of course they have talked about all of the possibilities, including the franchise tag. That's about the least newsworthy insider info I've heard in my life, lol...

Really glad to hear it. I do want them on the same page as regards to timing.

But this begs the question, clearly Terry is champing at the bit to get a deal done... if his agent can't do it then Terry needs to do the hard thing and fire the guy and get someone who can.

I once had to fire an agent. They got me into a really bad situation that I worried was going to be a bad situation and they talked me into signing the contract and against demanding protective language. Firing her was the right move and yet it still sucked. The agent was a good person. They failed me. Then, they couldn't do anything when things went to S..t.

Right now, Terry's contract negotiations have gone to s--t. If he's going to get out of it he needs someone better.

I’m in the the AP camp. It sounds like Terrys corner wants unreasonable money. I would also love to know what the team has offered. I’d be comfortable going 3/90 - but not sure if that would even get it done after hearing what Terrys corner wants.

He’s definitely going to play this year, but it’s not the look and story we need going in to what should be a very promising season.

I get it, I'm just one dude living in central PA rooting for our team. But I am running out of patience with Terry, and I hate feeling that way.
I'm in ATL with major $ tickets for the game, hoping to see him again.

Keim

This likely remains the biggest sticking point because it frames the argument for Washington. McLaurin will turn 30 on Sept. 15, which means he'd be 31 when an extension begins.

The Commanders rely heavily on analytics, and the numbers aren't kind to receivers at that age. According to ESPN Research, over the past five seasons only three receivers 31 years or older have played at least 10 games and averaged 70-plus receiving yards per game; six have averaged 60-plus.

A handful of notable receivers saw a drop-off in the season after turning 31. Julio Jones went from 96.2 yards per game to 39.5; DeAndre Hopkins from 77.9 to 50.5, A.J. Green from 80.2 to 34.2 and Andre Johnson from 79.1 to 63.8.

...teams don't pay older receivers the same as they do younger ones. According to Spotrac, of the 24 active receivers guaranteed the most money, only one -- Miami's Tyreek Hill -- was 30 or older upon signing. However, Hill had just turned 30 following consecutive seasons of more than 1,700 receiving yards.

...During a 30-minute media conference last month, McLaurin highlighted his first five seasons in Washington -- four of which were under previous owner Dan Snyder. McLaurin was the face of the franchise, often getting asked about off-field topics such as the multiple investigations into Snyder and the team over its toxic workplace culture and its financial dealings.

McLaurin also played with 11 different starting quarterbacks in his six NFL seasons, producing 1,000 yards in each of the past five. He has never topped 1,200 yards but has been consistent and is coming off his second Pro Bowl.

Washington, however, doesn't want to pay McLaurin for past performance, according to league sources. Instead, the franchise is trying to pay him based on how it thinks he'll produce at ages 31, 32 and 33.

The Commanders also have several key players up for extensions next offseason, and Daniels, potentially, after that. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil and linebacker Frankie Luvu headline the 2026 group. Both could be in line for big raises.

If cornerback Marshon Lattimore rebounds from an injury-plagued season, he could be in line for an extension as well. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel would be a free agent after this season, but if he produces, he could be another veteran the team wants to re-sign.

As those potential deals loom, Washington doesn't want to set a precedent with McLaurin of paying what it perceives to be too much.

...If the figure does hit $28 million per year with the right guarantees, will McLaurin risk passing that up for a potential bigger payday in the next offseason?

When it comes to Metcalf's contract with Pittsburgh, the Steelers needed to sign him to an extension because they traded for him. That gave Metcalf leverage. He's also two years younger.

Metcalf has caught 438 career passes for 6,324 yards, averaging 65.2 yards per game. He's scored 48 touchdowns and posted three 1,000 yards seasons. McLaurin has caught 460 passes for 6,379 yards and 38 touchdowns with five 1,000-yard seasons.

Denver, meanwhile, signed Courtland Sutton to a four-year contract last month that averaged $23 million per year with $40 million guaranteed. McLaurin, who would want more than Sutton (379 career catches for 5,340 yards, 32 TDs and two 1,000-yard seasons), has been more durable and productive, but, like the Bronco, will turn 30 early this season. For Washington and McLaurin, the question becomes how much more he warrants than Sutton.

the projected franchise tag for 2027 is $28,086,000
terry should be happy to get a bit more than that but not crazy amounts more

SIP, that entire post makes it sound like Peters etc are just being 100% rational and fair about it.

I don’t know how you argue against the analytics. “I want more because of my FEELINGS”?

Everyone keeps saying this, but it’s not like some other team is going to give him what he’s asking. He’s asking essentially for the opposite of a home team discount.

Think I’d rather see them prioritize Tunsil for an extension over Terry. Jayden’s blindside protection is more important than who he throws to. And Tunsil will only get more and more expensive the longer they wait. Need to lock him in for the next few years. With Terry, as we’ve discussed, there isn’t much pressure financially to get something done.

I think regardless of how much longer Terry is or isn't on the team, the front office is going to be looking for a #1 WR successor beginning this offseason, so it makes some sense why they wouldn't want to invest #1 Superstar WR contract money into a WR that is likely going to go through some drop off within the time period of the new contract and because this is still a roster in the process of being overhauled and reshaped, a lot of the cap space people think there is, will be gone quickly.

The reports of Jayden throwing to Terry away from the cameras kind of confirm what my suspicions have been, which is that probably within a week or so, Terry is going to be back practicing and preparing with the offense for the season whether he has an extension or not. I don't think he ever planned to sit out actual games and he also knows that he is going to require some actual practice time with the starting offense to be prepared to go for Week 1.

Listened to Keim on Sheehan. The gist.

A. The team he guesses would compromise at 28
B. Doesn't think the team goes higher
C. Terry's side dismisses the age issue
D. Terry's side fixated to the Metcalf deal
E. Sheehan mentioned the story where FO people said they'd take Metcalf over Terry. Keim said he heard the same
F. Terry's side stresses a Terry tax to be compensated for what he endured. The FO isn't interested in paying Terry based on the past.
G. Keim asking around is finding other teams also don't value Terry contract wise the way Terry sees himself

Terry, as much as I like him and what he has done for this team, is not a true game changing #1 WR in my eyes. WR1 is a must next offseason no matter what. Paying TM 30+ does not make any sense whatsoever. Understanding that right now Washington does not have anyone that can step into his shoes this year and the team really needs him out there, but going forward the team really needs a true #1. Being the number 1WR on this team does not make him a true #1 in the league.

The problem is going to be convincing Terry of all of this.

To me, I think the longer this goes on, the more Peters is going to play the leverage and just force Terry to either sit out and lose game checks (they have to make sure he can't collect game checks based on the ridiculous ankle injury), or play on his current deal.

What Peters might say is "this has to be done by August 30. After that, store is closed. You play on your deal or you sit out, and that's that.

You don't WANT to go hard-line with one of your best players, but this can't drag out forever.

They need a resolution. And it needs to happen soon.

I still can't wrap my mind around the size of the gulf between running back contracts and wide recievers.

I just cant understand how after a holdout james cook gets 12 per and we're struggling to get an almost 30 year old less than elite reciever to take between 28 and 30.

It feels nuts to me.

Thanks for this. Can you please clarify about E whether he’s talking about our FO or other FO’s?
