I don’t think a deal will get done.

For 2026 and beyond, the team will be able to attract (or develop) replacements for McClaurin. Maybe not as good, but enough to get by, because Daniels is so dynamic. Ideally it will be an undervalued, up-and-coming veteran, the WR analogue of Luvu or Biadasz.

If McLaurin had been a UFA this offseason, his market value might have been $28M or more for 2025. But why should Peters agree to that now? That would be a $8M reduction in cap space going forward.

Also, it would be a bad precedent for the team to yield to the public pressure campaign. But to be honest, I doubt a quieter approach would have worked any better for McLaurin. Because Washington is a destination now, my guess is that that the team will generally give close to its best offer up front. That’s a confident, straightforward style that leaves it up to the player whether to take a little less to be in the brotherhood.

For McClaurin the offer that makes sense to me is something like $24M for 2025, in exchange for team-friendly terms in the extension. But it sure looks like he’ll prefer to get to free agency in 2026 instead.

He’s not even guaranteed to get to FA in 2026, we can franchise him after this year for less than he’s asking for. That’s part of what makes his situation particularly hopeless in terms of his leverage to get what he is apparently demanding
 
It's hard to comprehend what Terry and his agent are thinking. They have absolutely no leverage. Zip. None. He has 3 choices - and that's it. He can play under his existing contract and best case scenario, by a free agent in 2026, worst case scenario, get tagged and possibly retagged. He can agree to a reasonable extension so that he can be a part of what in all likelihood will be Super Bowl runs by this team over the next 3-4 seasons. Or he can refuse to take the field, which isn't a real option.

From a financial and asset management standpoint, the team should be expected to facilitate one of the first two choices. How on earth TM and his agent have not figured this out - it is simply crazy.
 
At this point, I’m just curious when it’s going to hit the fan. Meaning when does the team quit honoring the hold-in?

There’s been basically no news other than about how far apart each side is. No trade partner has materialized.

At some point, and I think it should be soon, the team needs to take a stand on this. Even if its offer him a $3M dollar raise for this season only and tell them to take it or leave it.

Yeah it would seem something needs to happen this week before the organization starts losing its patience.

I'm sure they are.

The problem is, and it's one that nobody can get around, is his age.

If he was 26, this would be done by now.

But he's going to be 30 in less than a month. Extending a WR into their mid-thirties is VERY risky.

Yes, he's a fan favorite, and yes, it's possible his contract will look better in a couple of years. However, it's also possible he gets old in the next 2 years and isn't close to a top 5-10 receiver, and then the team is stuck.

Also making it hopeless is the fact he really can't just sit out or say he's injured, because in that scenario, we don't franchise him, but who is going to pay a 31 year old receiver who missed an entire season top of the market money in FA? Nobody.

So, he has to play, he has to play well, he can't sit out, and he has no leverage.

If it's Terry who's stuck on the numbers, his agents have the obligation to talk him out of it. If it's the agents, then Terry is getting bad advice.
 
Delusions of elite stature and delusions of leverage where none exists....such hubris on the part of both McLaurin and his agent. If I'm AP, #17 plays out his current contract or he's welcome to sit out. JD5 is now the face of the franchise, Deebo arrived and has the star power in the WR room. Maybe both of those dynamics rubbed #17 the wrong way.
 
I think he plays out his contract and Washington uses a top pick in 2026 to grab a pass catcher that can grow up with Daniels over the next 4-5 years.

When Jayden is in his prime from 28-32 Terry will likely be retired whether he stays here or not.

He’s not in an unusual spot. When a new regime comes in and a long standing player is on the outside arc of his prime the club often wants to go younger rather than invest top dollar in the veteran, unless that veteran is still clearly a top 3-5 player.

I think we all can acknowledge that Terry is not an Aaron Donald or Trent Williams at 30.

And I think if he came in with reasonable offer to discuss something might have gotten done. Teams do recognize continuity, but only to a point.

This happens all the time, I remain unconcerned. Even if it's a last minute signing, he's not sitting out games. I trust he will be just fine.

I think it's important a WR and QB throw together in practice for some period of time before the regular season. The modern passing game is predicated on timing and anticipation. And no matter how experienced you are, after taking 7 months off, it takes a hot minute to round back into form. It doesn't matter what preparation he is doing, it's not the same as running routes, seeing coverages, making split second decisions, and catching contested balls. Especially with this "ankle injury" which is going to heal very quickly once he gets a new deal.

I think it would be really beneficial for Terry to have 2-3 weeks of practice leading up to the season. That basically means this needs to be settled in the next week or so.
 
The other day Chick Hernandez sounded a little lathered up on BMitch and Finlay - and tossed the idea out there, that Jayden still gets to the park super early and heads to the bubble to throw at 6am sharp, and he insinuated that he believes he’s in there throwing to Terry. Who knows.
 
You mean he's sneaking Terry into the place in a suitcase or something?

Wouldn't somebody have seen something by now otherwise?

Didn’t come off like he was trying to make news. It’s not a secret that he’s been at the facility. I guess it would be news if someone could confirm an “injured” Terry was running routes for Jayden but he stopped short of confirming anything like that.
 
Communication never hurts. I hope they actually talked about getting something done and didn't just mumble pleasantries to each other.
