The 2025 Free Agency Thread

Great city. I've been there twice. The first time over 20 years ago, the last time (partly to see a game) about 4 years ago. The City was totally transformed during that period.
I’m from the NW of England - spent a lot of time in Liverpool. Most of it is/was a bomb site :) Then again I’ve not been there for about 10 years now.

He's very much still making chicken salad out of chicken shit. We still are lacking real playmakers on the defensive side. Luvu is our best player, probably followed by Mikey. I worry about the inevitable drop off from Wagner--he's a HOFer but no one plays forever.

I think he does a really good job of scheming up pressure, but there are a lot of 40's and 50's in PFF's run defense ratings across our DL. That's worrisome--and none of the guys we brought in did much better.

Their signings I am hoping about more about big bodies as far as stopping the run. Goldman used to be great against the run, hopefully he regains that form. Wise is pedestrian against the run but also a big body, so I'll take it. Kinlaw a big dude but more about pass rush.

As far as Whitt, my beef is two fold.

A. They played their worst defense in big moments late in the game. Part of Jayden's heroics is this defense played horrible in the 4th quarter so he had to bail the team out. If I recall this defense was ranked as the 3rd worst in the NFL in the 4th quarter.

B. I think the narrative that it was Whitt who was the key to making the Dallas seconday what it was has been debunked. It's it the teaching they get and or the corners are so well position because of the scheme that they are often in the right place at the right time to pick the ball off? Wait till Whitt gets his hands on Forbes, etc. Well, I gather it was the talent not Whitt that made those corners into ball hawks. Forbes was arguably even worse this past season. And they had less picks last season than Del Rio's wretched unit from the season before.

I am not out on Whitt. but I don't care anymore how much he wins his press conferences. As bad as Haslett's defenses were, they could do at least somethings well at times including in 2012 turning the ball over.

This defense really doesn't major in much IMO.

Will see, he gets a pass from me but he's on notice. Again am not looking for a great defense. My bar is low. Just do something well? one thing?

The area around the dock, the mall, Matthew Street is transformed from my first trip.

I like that city also from a side trip standpoint -- Chester, Conwy -- Northern Wales.

The EDGE crop isn't enticing at all for me. Hendrickson is the only possibly available needle mover, but that will also cost assets. Depends on what those assets may be.

WR - Much improved. Terry, Deebo, Gallup, N. Brown, McCaffrey, Strachen are a much improved unit over 2024.

OL - Much improved. A potential OL to start the season (no Cosmi) of: Tunsil, Allegretti, Biadasz, Coleman, Conerly is a significant upgrade. When Cosmi returns if Coleman can move to the left it's even better. I also don't count Herbig out for the LG spot.

DT - I'm comfortable. Newton, Payne, Kinlaw, Holmes, Goldman and Day are an overall solid unit.

CB - I'm pretty happy here all things considered. Lattimore, Sainristil, Amos, Noah I, JJ... this is night and day from last year. Lattimore's health is a wild card.

The OL and CB groups are just so very incomprehensibly improved. Just, orders of magnitude better than what we started the year with in 2024.

In terms of the DL, I think improvement from Newton could really make an impact. Also, the Last time Daron Payne was good, he was playing for a contract. Same situation this year. Getting more quick, inside pressure this year could help ameliorate the dearth of talent at edge.

I'm fascinated at WR. I'm sure you were also thinking of Lane, but he isn't on your list. McLaurin, Deebo, Lane, N. Brown, Gallup and McCaffrey have to be the 6 that make the 53, right? We have't had a group this deep and solid in forever. Before I started actually counting my fingers, I was wondering whether McCaffrey was even assured a roster spot. Watching how the depth chart shakes out on OL and at WR is going to be fascinating.

At edge, I can't see us trading for Hendrickson now, since we only have 5 picks next year and don't have a 2nd or 4th. But, thinking about the overall quality of the roster if we did trade for Hendrickson is pretty unbelievable. I think Hendrickson takes our DL to an 8, and our defense to top 10 overall. Combine that with the upgrades we already made on offense and that is a legit top 3 roster in the NFC.

Some guys are brittle as they get older and others like London Fletcher or Darrell Green continue to soldier on into their late 30’s.

I dont expect us to sign any of the big name edge rushers left out there.
Not that I don't think we need help just that it never seems to happen that way.
We see a big hole in our roster and we immediately look for the best available plug and eventually they sign a guy who was an undrafted free agent 6 years ago and has been on 4 teams and 3 practice squads the last 2 years.

If i were a betting man I'd guess it'd be closer to the latter than the former but we'll see.

Yes it never seems to happen that way but we are in a different place than we are accustomed to with a stud QB, owner, G, front office, coaching staff and a fairly solid roster.

I see AP making statements that they are happy with the roster but still looking to improve it.

Once Terry's contract is settled there should be cap space to be able to make a couple roster moves whether signing player or making some sort of a trade (maybe Hendricks or perhaps someone else we have yet to talk about).

I do think there will be another player brought in to get at the QB along with a PK to add competition.

I certainly hope you're right, I'm excited for next season regardless, we've made some huge upgrades and we were pretty good last year but I'd love to go into the season without any glaring weaknesses.

I concur and right now I do not see us having huge weaknesses in any area. I love the draft(Especially the Amos pick) and looking to see what next season brings. Quite sure will bring in some quality players in FA also.

I still worry pass rush may be a huge weakness.

Edge is a clear area of weakness IMO. An argument can be made we are better against the run/setting an edge - but getting pressure/sacks from that position has to be a concern.

The team clearly understands that. Reports are they are kicking tires on free agents pass rushers.

One positive about this year being a good Edge draft, is that I am sure during roster cuts there will be some serviceable veteran Edge guys available that got pushed off the roster due to younger talent influx. I think we will be fine this year on D, no worse than last year at rushing the qb, but overall better on D
Oline should be solid... (when was the last time you could say that with Dumbo Rons drafts?) so I am particular excited to see the run game improve... our Oline was definitely a weak spot.
Corner play should be much improved as well and while i am not as high on WRs... the Debo addition on its own should be an interesting piece.
